I'm getting prepared for the walleye opener and have a question for you all. i often troll shallow stick baits in 5-6 fow and often use a petzl headlamp so i can see what i'm doing (taking weeds of baits, tying knots etc). do you think that in shallow water wearing/using such a light could disturb the walleye such that they would be less likely to bite as i troll? if so, how do you deal with the problem? thanks for you opinions, andre

you definitely want a stiff/heavy action rod, but one that is also sensitive (not a ugly stick!). i prefer a 7' rod but 6- 6 1/2 will also work. the brand is not that important as long as it's lighweight, stiff and sensitive. i got mine at gander mtn for about $60 and i've caught 100s of lakers on it equally - probably even more - important is non-stretch line, such as braid. in 100 fow, 1 oz jig is fine. i use 1 1/2 oz if fishing 130 fow or more. good luck!!! dre

I launched last weekend out of woodville. I was backing out of the ramp at less than 1 mph, and my prop hit bottom. I didn't think too much of it, proceeded to fish and caught quite a few lakers. when i loaded the boat i saw that about a 3" chunk was broken off my propellor. The lake is not nearly as low as it was a few weeks back and this was almost directly in front of the ramp, so i recommend keeping your motors trimmed up until you get into at least 4-5 fow. that was a fairly expensive mishap. take care, dre

Hi all, i don't fish out of wagkins glen much, and the few times that i have, i have never caught much. I hope to make it there this sunday. got out with a buddy yesterday. Fished for 3 hours and only marked 2-3 fish! and that included looking on east and west sides from the launch up to the condos. Finally found fish near bottom in 160 fow and landed 12 in 3 hours - nice fish - most between 5-9 pounds. All on sutton spoons. it sure felt good to feel some tug! dre

i was just searching the web and found the "Onanda" ramp - on west lake road about 6 miles S. of Canandaigua. Have any of you ever used that ramp?

I know i asked this about 10 days ago, but with the cold spell we've just had, i thought it may be frozen now, and i don't want to drive there and find that out? has anyone been there in the past day or two? Are there any other launches on Canandaigua (besides the North end launch)? thanks, andre

Hi all, i used to be an obsessed duck hunter decades ago when i lived in texas and we could shoot lead. i have not hunted ducks much in the last 15 years but i want to do some in the second season coming up. I don't have the money for the expensive non-toxics, so i'll be shooting the winchester shells i have: xpert HV. i have 2s, BB and BBB. What shells would you recommend i use and more importantly, what choke should i use with steel? i have a remington 11-87 and all the stock tubes it came with - from improved cylinder to full choke. thanks very much! andre PS - i still don't have any great looking spots chosen after a couple days of scouting. I live near hemlock and canadice lakes and would rather not travel too far. The south ends of those lakes had virtually no ducks on them today. Do any of you have any suggestions for a spot near hemlock lake where there would be decent chances of decoying some ( i hear that Conesus is good but i also hear there are LOTS of hunters there and i don't like competing with dudes everywhere). thanks again and Happy Holidays!
