  1. I finally took my first deer with the muzzleloader. After missing 3/4 of gun season due to Covid I finally started feeling better last week and I did a couple sets at the Farm at home with nothing to show for it.

This morning I headed south and met the guys from Camp. We kicked up a couple doe and a small buck at two pieces of state land. Then at 3 o’clock we moved to another small piece of state land and at 3:45 I was able to take my buck at 90 yards.

It was a dead center shoulder hit he ran close to 200 yards and I only had two drops of blood the entire way. If it wasn’t for snow on the ground and being able to follow his tracks I never would’ve found him

  2. Not my year I’m not complaining I figured I’d go with the black powder. Stopped at the local gun shop to get primers for my Thompson center he sold all of them to some sporting good store in New Jersey Check the Internet not a store within 100 miles has them. I’m in upstate New York.so I’m out of luck there. Finally found a package in the cellar by my loading equipment that was 15 years old figured I’d try them. They worked. All set to go out the next day over 32 inches of snow.Maybe I’ll try snowshoes.Just one of them years

So Im all set for my trip to Ohio for late muzzleloader in January. I just purchased my license and they do things very different. It is certainly not cheap!

The reason I like Ohio is I love the fact it gives me a opportunity to extend the hunting season. Instead of cutting into our season here. Im leaning towards September Maine bear hunting to add to the short list.

Any other suggestions of late season or early season out of state hunts?

You got a problem. Find some bunny spots we will hunt.

  4. My season is put on hold. My wife has tested Positive for COVID and she has it bad. Just about every symptom. She was and has been the most cautious and careful about this and it blows our mind how or where she got it. I’m on contact quarantine for 14 days now. I will be released on the 15th. I will hunt muzzleloader for the first time ever this year.

I enjoy reading this thread as it “lets me live” through all of you while I’m stuck inside.

Look forward to all the stories and be safe everyone

I got one those walking around now. Hit a 115 ish yesterday with cbow. Looked good sounded good but no good. Watched him go lay down so we thought. Let him go for 4 hours. Then of course here comes big rain wet crap. Did manage to find blood where he stopped that was the end. Looked big time no avail. Found my bolt broke in 2 places
Might have bounced off of some brush on the way to him. Those bolts r so fast I can’t c them. I’ll look today for dog tracks. It sucks for the deer not me.

Took this guy December 1st. My first deer with a pistol and probably equal to my nicest buck. I took the shot at 4:15 and it felt like a good one. I didn’t see the buck crash but it looked like he was struggling. The pistol was so loud that my ears were ringing so much I couldn’t here him crash either. I went up to look for sign before dark but couldn’t find anything. I walked back to the house, had some food and called my dad. He came over and we went back up to look. It had started snowing now so I was concerned we would lose what sign there may be. Nothing, couldn’t even find dig up tracks from him running. It is a small block of woods behind my house so I knew if he was dead he’d be in there. We gridded it where I saw him heading but still nothing. At this point I was sick, thinking I had either missed the buck or made a bad shot. I called a couple buddies and went back to the house to wait for them. The three of us went back in and started from the shot area again and Cody was able to find some running tracks. After following them a bit I was able to find some blood and my confidence was restored. But still unsure of the hit. The trail picked up and was pretty easy to follow slowly. We got to a spot where we lost blood for a while, but I made an arc and found some more. The trail picked up pretty good again and I was able to find some foamy blood on some goldenrod. Now I felt a lot better. We followed a few more spots and looked up 10 yards away to see my buck dead as could be and covered in snow. The shot was right behind the shoulder and smashed both lungs. I just was looking about 10 yards to close at the initial site of the shot. The buck didn’t make it 100 yards before piling up. The shot was from about 70 yards. Super happy I stuck with it and finally got a deer with the pistol, and a hell of a deer at that! This is the first time I’ve killed a deer that I “had history” with, I have his sheds from at least 2 years but potentially 3. To think that he avoided hunters all those years and I was the one that was in the right place at the right time still stuns me. Hope you enjoy the read, good luck and safe hunting!

I walked my entire farm in 7A (180+ acres) today and only saw rabbit tracks. Could not believe it.

My hunting group down in 7R pushed a big section of woods and only kicked out one yearling.

    Can’t figure it out

Anyone ever have an issue with a crossbow misfiring when you take the safety off? I have a Ten Point Wicked Ridge Invader G3, Went to discharge it, took safety off and it fired without touching trigger. I've had it 5 years and never once had this issue, maybe I cocked it wrong as it is the type where you put the clips on the strands and pull. Regardless that thing is now retired and I will be upgrading for next season to an acudraw!

SOUNDS TO ME YOU NEVER FULLY COCKED IT

After yesterday afternoons action I really had high hopes for today. Rather then hunting from the ground I elected to hunt from a "shotgun" stand I have directly across the field from where I hunted the day before.
I had deer in the field at 20 after 2 and figured it was going to be a crazy sit. They left the field after feeding for 20 minutes and I didn't see another deer until around four. At four it was like someone had rang the dinner bell and the field became flooded with does and fawns. And it didn't take long for the bucks to join them. It was actually very calm in the field initially until two 1.5 year old bucks started getting competitive with does and all hell broke loose. Once bumping and chasing started the other three bucks in the field got into the action. I actually never even noticed "my buck" until he started bumping does and chasing off the other bucks. There was two good bucks in the field. My buck and a bigger eight point (which I'm convinced is his slighly bigger, twin brother). Eventually "my buck" just got within gun range and I elected to take a 125 yard shot. He mule kicked after the shot and ran less than 75 yards to his death. Gotta love it when you see them drop. Gotta love it when a plan comes together.

  10. Here's a hunting story.... No short version... For the last 10 days I've been down at a buddy's camp.... Been pretty slow... Saw a bunch of small bucks but nothing crazy.... Very few Does as they were herded up on the other side of the property...
Passed on 4 bucks yesterday and one early this AM. About 815 a decent 8 walked by me super close ( I had my eyes closed so he didn't look into my soul..... He was that close). As he got by me into a thicket, I took the shot... Admittingly it was a really bad shot. Buck hunched up... Wobbled then layed down.. 30 minutes of him laying in thicket not moving, I slowly club down. As I get to the bottom rung of my stand, I hear 3 crashes in the thicket... Dang it hes still alive!.... I knew he was in trouble, so I snuck back to camp... Paced the carpets, called some lifelines to talk me off the ledge and waited for friends to get back for assistance...
About 3 hrs later, we started the track... No blood! WTF! Found a fresh bed in snow... Then followed fresh tracks... There he is! Sitting up looking at me! As he was going to stand up I Raised up the .44 mag and let him have it.
First shot was a deflection off a branch. Bullet went into him in front of back leg, traveled forward and got the gut and liver.
What a week long adventure... Huge thanks to the Johnson Family for having me back down this year. Great friends... Lots of laughs... Getting a deer is a bonus1122201145.thumb.jpeg.ede5bf9ce7179636bdb6321e6de6deef.jpeg1122201144c.thumb.jpeg.4173cd3ef9da8c3d00680cf186f2b3c6.jpeg

  11. Well my kid got it done this afternoon.
Long story, short he wasn't even planning on hunting this afternoon. Around 130 he was inquiring about hunting. I told him he had two stands he could hunt with this east wind. He ask me which stand would I hunt. I told him I would hunt the set I hunted this morning. The other stand choice you may see more deer but the other one your bound to see the right deer. And boy did he see the right deer. Just as he was approaching the stand he saw a doe pop up. He dropped to one knee and then he noticed there were five bucks all around her. He picked out the biggest and let it fly.
Proud dad moment for sure. His biggest to date.

  12. Well, ventured to state land yesterday morning with my brother for opening day. We were unsure how the day would unfold, as you hear many horror stories of state land hunting on opening day of gun with bullets flying by and guys being everywhere. My brother and I hunted different locations within 5 miles of each other. We figured divide and conquer. We got in early to try and beat the crowd as we both started our trek in around 4:20AM. The leaves were crunchy, and it took me 40 minutes to get to the area I wanted to hunt. Got settled in and just sat in the pitch black until the sun came up. I never saw any lights coming in where I was hunting, but my brother had seen a couple others. The wind ended up being no good for the spot I was sitting in, as I felt like it was blowing right to where the deer would be coming from. I decided at 7:40 that if I wanted to see deer, I had to move alittle further south to get my wind blowing in a manageable direction. While it sucked to have to move so early, I made the move very slow scratching the ground with my feet letting out turkey yelps and clucks. I made it about 60 yards south, and felt like that would be better than where I was at. Well, about 30 minutes later I see a good sized deer running through the woods. It ran directly to the tree I had originally set up at, and I could tell it was just a small buck. When it hit that tree, it must have caught my scent, turned to the south and ran right at me. It stopped broadside at 16 yards. At this moment, so many thoughts were running through my mind (your target buck back home 140” to 150” buck got hit last week by a car, you just hiked up a mountain, it’s state land). I’m not going to get into my season prior to this, but it’s been a disaster. All that added up in the quick decision to settle on the deer and pull the trigger. It was no where near some of the bucks I have on camera this season In fact this buck probably scores 13” [emoji23]. But to tell you guys the truth, I couldn’t be happier with this little buck, and it really is just a great representation of my 2020 season lol. I later got a call from my brother saying that he shot one. Long story short he ended up not being able to find it, which was a real bummer as it would have been a first deer. We were hunting the whole day, so I told him to just sit right as he could have another chance. Another chance did not come for him, but he had a great experience and took some knowledge away to learn from. At about noon, I decided to move again further south and found a nice funnel along a thick transition. At about 1:30, 8 or 9 doe came in at 30 yards right up the funnel along the transition. I settled on a nice mature doe, and shot. I don’t know what happened, but I made a terrible shot that lead to me tracking this deer for 2 hours and ended up having to make a followup shot around 4pm. It was devastating to me that the deer was running around that long injured, bu I was glad it all worked out, and was a pretty cool experience on state land. My brother didn’t end up having anymore luck. It was a heck of a job dragging them both out, and my whole boy is sore today. Those two deer make four in the freezer for me this year, so I will be done for now. I may get out for late season to try for a could of the other good bucks I have on camera back home. Good luck everybody!IMG_6827.thumb.JPG.bfaf93bd3c4041e55e86c97b881998ab.JPGIMG_6864.thumb.JPG.395868a30da93a02040eff4db3ac4f55.JPG
