  1. One of the funniest parts of the trip involved a large hawk interested in our activity. He swooped down from a 40ft. tree and picked our baitfish (a 8" gold shiner) right out of the water . As I said- the reels are left free and it was funny to see the braid spool off the reel and head 40ft. back into the air as he flew away while the hook was still attached to the shiner. As the braid spooled towards the end of the reel the hawks talons won and he got the bait. It was a good show! Plenty of manatee, but no gator sightings.
  2. Just about.... It's a different kind of fishing. You let the bass take the bait and run with it when the reel is free spooling and wait a little while till he gets it in his belly. You need a lot of patience- if you try to set too early they will just spit it out. Then you hit the clicker and start to tighten up the line till the FISH tightens the line. That's when you let your rod tip drop to the water and yank it back over your shoulder. I nearly ate the hook a few times when I tried to set it too early. I practiced with my gear while on the trip till they slaughtered my 20# Trilene XL twice. Then I just stuck to the guides 65# Power Pro braid. My two baitcasters now have 65# Power Pro on them today!! I just got a job in FL while i was down here..... anyone need any BRAND NEW great lakes gear?
  3. I went on a trip with www.bobstonewater.com today. Awesome fishing and a great guy!! Anyone heading to FL should look him up. I boated over 10 largemouth over 5#- the largest was 7# 14oz. I probably missed another 10 slobs in the pads or due to a poor hook set. These monsters require a Barry Bonds style hookset!! Here's a sample....
  4. I assume it is a thermally controlled choke?? If it had an electric choke it would be a touch quicker to respond, but a thermally controlled choke needs to get heat in the manifold and to the carb. before it will open fully and lean out. I'd just deal with it in the winter since it will operate just fine when it warms up.
  5. You can get the Eagle Seacharter 602C (combo FF/GPS) for $543 w/free shipping and kick in another $300 for a new DR unit direct from Kell. Eagle 640 FF/GPS combo (you may find another combo unit on the site that will fit you for less)- https://byownerelectronics.com/store/ca ... 0c85323b37 I have the Eagle 502c GPS (not combo), but here is the 502c Combo ($447 shipped)- http://www.byownerelectronics.com/store ... 580&page=1 If you get the 502c, you only need $200 for a DR unit. The 502c is a really nice GPS and the FF is 500W RMS on the combo unit. DR ($444 shipped)- http://www.kelloutdoors.com/Depth%20Rai ... onitor.htm For just under $900 you would have some nice new electronics for many years to come with the 502c combo and the DR unit.
  6. I started out in the middle of last year and had good luck as a newb on the lake. I mostly used NK spoons....... NBK's (green and yellow) on silver and gold blanks, watermelons, frogs w/ tape and a few select glow spoons. Call NK and ask them what is a good "starter" set. I called them last year, went there... and then the next day I had a good luck with every spoon I bought the day before. Towards the end of the season I had good luck with green glow j-plugs running shallow. This year I look forward to spring with my new planer board rig, wire set-ups and a few copper rigs from AT-TOM-MIK. I'm now stocked with flies and flashers which I didn't use at all last year. My biggest challenge this year will be how to choose what rigs to drop in the water on any given day  Ask plenty of questions and listen to the Pro's here. There is a lot of good information.
  7. West Marine in Rochester. Rob and George are great!! They will match any online price- just print out the ad and bring it to the store. They price matched two Scotty 1116 downriggers for me today
  8. I found a set of 15# chromer's Bill. Hopefully they do the trick
  9. Updated the software to version 1.7 and all is well now. If you don't have version 1.7, I'd recommend updating.
  10. Sounds like a plan. I will give them a shout next week and check on stock.
  11. Thanks. Do I need 15# with a Depth Raider, or will 12# do the trick? I want to make a one time purchase and not have to change later.
  12. I'm having a bit of a difficult time finding a pair of 15# chrome sharks. Anywhere to pick up a few?
  13. The best I have been able to do is to name one at a time and then restart the unit. If I try to name a sedcond waypoint it will basically set the coordinates to the north pole before I can finish!! I have a call into tech support, but I geuss they got like an inch of snow in Oklahoma and it shut down te state for a few days... LOL....
  14. Shoot me a PM with your phone number. We can hook up for whatever trip you want to do. Corey
  15. I have two charters scheduled over X-mas break.... Jan 11th- http://www.bobstonewater.com . Full day 9 hours of bass fishing for $350 + bait (avg. $75 for bait). Jan. 12th- www.critterfleet.com . 12 hour Sport charter (king mackeral, marlin, wahoo, dolphin, grouper, etc) is $1200 (max party of six- three booked right now) www.critterfleet.com I could use another head or two on the 12th.
  16. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to manually change the default numbering of waypoint names on this GPS. Following the instructions in the manual does not work and actually deletes my waypoint and assigns it a Lat./Long. of 00/00. Does anyone have good instructions on how to edit a waypoint name on an Eagle or similar Lowrance unit?
  17. I have four wire combo's. They all have Shakespeare T20LCL's that hold 1000' of 30# wire no problem- (no backer) and the spools are filled just right. The reels are about $45 each. As far as rods I have two different types: 2- Shakespeare BWDD 10' 1100 (12-30#) Dipsey Diver rods (you need to put the twilly on them). These rods are about $65 + the twilly. 2- Okuma Blue Diamond 10' BD-T-1002M (12-30#) Wire Special rods (the first guide has a roller and the tip already has a twilly installed. These rods are $69 with the twilly. The Okuma's feel a bit stiffer and you don't have to hassle with putting the twilly on.
  18. I bought two 600' copper Penn 345GTi's from A-TOM-MIK. He recommends the Shakespeare 9' 0" BWD 1101 rod (6-20#). Drop him a line, or look under the other copper thread here. It's a good idea to have him mark the copper every 100' for reference. look on page #2- http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing/viewtopic.php?t=3455&start=15&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight= No Twilly's or rollers on the rod- just ensure all the guides are like new. Tom spent at least 30 minutes on the phone with me before I made my purchase. Great Fly combo's as well I bought his Plano box w/ tubes and filled it with 32 flies on his color selection.
