Question ? why do u choose to use cooper wire of mono ?
Misty IV replied to ironangler222's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Ironangler222, I used to launch out of the Bohemia River and fish around Turkey Point many, many years ago before moving my interests to Lake Ontario. How is the striper fishing in the fall? Still incredible, I hope. I second what LongLine said. When flatlining, copper sinks faster and further than mono does. We did a nice job this season on the copper. If you're going to be on Lake Ontario, I strongly suggest giving the copper a try, even if you do just one reel of it. The results are sure to amaze you! -
US Captain's Training is the one I saw advertised in my magazine. Definitely alot of the classes available out there. Aside from the added weight qualification, what additional does the Masters 100 Ton give over the OUPV? Seems like the small added cost and additional classroom dates is worth it from what I have read so far. Depending on the qualifications you may not get the 100 ton masters. If most of your experience is on a smaller lake ontario boat then most likely you will get a 25 ton masters license. For the added 200 bucks and 2 days of class why wouldnt you upgrade to the masters. Also, double the cost of the class by the time its threw. By the time you pay for the cpr class, your doctors physical and eye exam, your masters upgrade, your drug test and twic card, etc and driving all over for class, test in a different spot, twic in buffalo and your doctors the 695 dollar class turns into 1500 quite quickly. Not trying to scare ya, but its better to no what to expect then to find out as you go Thanks for the additional information. Majority of my experience is on Lake Ontario with my Islander 221 and my old center console. I have had plenty of experience with my grandfather's 42' Pacemaker in years gone by, too, and have spent many years on the Chesapeake Bay. I run with a volunteer fire company and get my CPR recertified yearly and get a full physical annually. I have full documentation of all that. I reside in southeastern PA just west of Philadelphia, and it seems the closest class from any provider is in Rochester. I'm not scared to drive there for the class. Our lakehouse is in the Pulaski area, so would stay there for the week and drive to Rochester. Don't worry about scaring me - takes alot to do that. I'm just feeling the waters right now and getting a feel if this is something I should really consider given where my interests on the lake are. I have had friends say I should do it, with as much time I spend up north and on the water with friends. But, again, thanks for the replies so far & keep them coming!!

ARE A TOM MIC COMBOS ANY GOOD. I HERE THERE AWSOME.
Misty IV replied to ironangler222's topic in Open Lake Discussion
A-TOM-MIK flies produced ALL of our catches this season. Greens were the hottest with the Hammer Fly doing its share of damage, as well! -
At Thanksgiving dinner with the family last night, dad & I got talking about the season on the lake this year and how things went. While talking, he asked if I had ever considered getting a Captain's license. While the thought has crossed my mind in the past, I never gave it much consideration until last night. I saw an ad in one of my fishing magazines for the OUPV course offered by a well-known school. They have a class coming to Rochester in March I was looking at online last night. Would give me an excuse to drive up to the lake for a week and stay at the house...LOL. For those captains on here, what/whose course did you take to get your license and would you recommend them or not? I'm open to any chat about this. I'm kinda at a point in my life where I may need to take another direction career-wise, as I can't go any higher up where I currently am. Just kinda feeling the waters right now and looking for input. Thanks!

Before I put the boat away, my bimini & canvas drop curtains need a good cleaning. What suggestions for a good cleaner does everyone have? I have tried the warm soap and water approach with some success, but some of the stains are being difficult and stubborn. Also, what about a waterproofing spray or coating for the canvas? I noticed a few times over the season during a rainfall, water was seeping through the sections of the canvas top seams. The top is only 2 years old, so nowhere near needing replacement yet. Any thoughts or ideas on either topic? Thanks!

And the latest, sent to me today by Thomas Marks, Executive Director of Great Lakes Wind Truth, NY State Director of the Great Lakes Sport Fishing Council & North American Platform Against Windpower: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Great News it is official the GLOW project is dead! There are no plans for a funeral or any mourning, just some brief rejoicing that NYPA has displayed some common sense. They have proposed to build offshore wind turbines near Long Island. We have to be very watchful of the Lake Erie Alternative Power (LEAP) proposal for 1400 wind turbines of which 225 are planned for NY waters of Lake Erie. The Ohio Governor has displayed some common sense recently saying that our energy sources should be decided by the market, sustainable and cost competitive. The governments only role should be to set the goals for emissions as they did for the automotive industry. The industry will find the best, most efficient, cheapest way to supply energy. Real competition in a capitalistic system works that way. Unfortunately the NY Governor has not yet seen the light, although I believe he will. Our economy is weak and we have a huge crisis in federal spending threats of cutbacks in Social Security and Medicare, seniors and low wage earners struggling to make ends meet. They do not need expensive wind power that is not reliable and has to be backed by conventional sources. It is not right to cut social security when we are giving huge subsidies to foreign companies building wind turbines. The subsidies should be stopped before we cut social security or Medicare. More news to report: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ohio Senate Bill imperils Lake Erie wind project CLEVELAND -- Northeast Ohio leaders warned today that a state Senate proposal to repeal Ohio's renewable energy portfolio standard for public utilities would significantly imperil an ambitious plan to develop wind energy in Lake Erie. At issue is Senate Bill 216, a new proposal by state senators Kris Jordan (R-Powell), Tom Patton (R-Strongsville) and Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati) to repeal Ohio's renewable portfolio standard. The existing standard, enacted three years ago, requires electric utilities (subject to some limitations) to provide 25 percent of their retail energy supply from advanced or renewable energy sources by 2025. Examples of advanced or renewable sources include clean coal, wind, and solar energy. In a Cleveland news conference, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, Ashtabula County Commissioner Daniel R. Claypool and Lorain County Commissioner Ted Kalo were joined by other area leaders in expressing concern about the proposal. Among the area leaders joining FitzGerald, Claypool and Kalo were representatives of the Lake County Port Authority, the city of Cleveland and the Great Lakes Towing Co. If the renewable portfolio standard is repealed, this would significantly reduce private sector interest in the development of a 20 to 30 megawatt wind energy demonstration project in Lake Erie, they said. The effort is being promoted by LEEDCo., a collaboration of the counties of Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, and Ashtabula as well as the city of Cleveland, NorTech, and the Cleveland Foundation. "We are in a race to capture the jobs that will come from the new energy economy. We can and should be a leader in pioneering new energy technologies that can be manufactured locally and sold globally," FitzGerald said. "We are well positioned right now, but this proposal is a big step in the wrong direction." WKYC-TV

I feel your pain with the large capacity fuel tank. I have always topped mine off and added StaBil to reduce the area condensation can form in the tank. Never had any issues come springtime. And, with the spring runs, that fuel gets burnt off in no time anyway!!

Received an email from a friend in Oswego with the following information about Mitt Romney. Perhaps worth watching?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Romney blasts 'ballyhooed' wind and solar "We should not be in the business of steering investment toward particular politically favoured approaches," he says in the plan. "That is a recipe for both time and money wasted on projects that do not bring us dividends. The failure of windmills and solar plants to become economically viable or make a significant contribution to our energy supply is a prime example." If elected US president, Republican candidate Mitt Romney would end federal government support for the solar and wind industries, and curtail the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) "reckless regulatory behaviour" and "war on carbon."

I have ( Sealine-equipped rods and they have never skipped a beat. I still have my original (2) units I bought back in 1993 and they are still going strong. I use them for my downrigger rods. I have the 47LC and LCA's. I have (2) of the ADP57's for my 10-color and they have been awesome. For my 600' coppers, I have (2) Penn 345's. I add another vote for the Sealines, though. Can't go wrong with them!

Mexico Bay - 9/4/11
Misty IV replied to Misty IV's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Shame I left Junior's too soon. It'd have been great to meet you, Andy, and see your 34 pounder. Damn. We were pulling around to Woody's to replace the combo we lost and stock up on more of that Green Bikini flasher. That thing was on fire!! I probably won't be up until late this month or the first weekend in October again. Commitments every weekend this month. Shame none of them are fishing related. I hope to find that monster again or his grandfather before I pull the boat home for the winter. How often are you up at the lake? Would love to meet up and share stories sometime. -
Prior to getting my 221 Islander, I fished the lake out of an 18' center console and it did fine. I upgraded just because I needed more room and something that didn't require me to come in when the waves got bigger than 3 footers. You'll be fine. As mentioned above, watch the skies, winds and have all safety gear onboard and ready to go.

Mexico Bay - 9/4/11

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 9/4/11 Time on Water: 6 hours Weather/Temp: Cloudy, overcast, sun, 70 Wind Speed/Direction: variable Waves: 0-5' rollers Surface Temp: 68 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 6 Total Boated: 1 Species Breakdown: King Hot Lure: Green Bikini flasher, Green Crinkle A-TOM-MIK fly Trolling Speed: 1.7 - 2.5 Down Speed: 1.5 - 2.2 Boat Depth: 90-160 Lure Depth: 50-110 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== We knew the severe thunderstorm watch had been issued, but ventured to the launch anyway. The skies didn't look threatening. On the water around 7am, battled some waves heading out and set-up in 85FOW due north of the Mexico Point launch. A lot of marks from 50 down to the bottom. Took advantage of the 3-rod rule today. Had (2) 600' copper lines out and (4) rigger lines down. Had the above mentioned green bikini/A-TOM-MIK combo on (2) riggers and tried some other combos on the other (4) lines. Hard to find any decent temps, but heard kings were appearing in the 60-65 degree water. Trolled north to 120FOW, then turned west towards the plant. Things were slow until about 9am when the green bikini combo fires and we land a small 6.5lb king. Dropped that combo back down. Had one copper hit shortly afterwards but lost it about 100' from the boat. Had the riggers fire a few times but nobody home. Finally, about noon, the same combo that caught the earlier king trips at 65 feet down over 150FOW and appears it was a false release. Not!!! Waited a few seconds and the rod tip bent down to the water and the reel starts screaming. Fitz, my crew member, grabbed the rod and starts to reel in. As I am trying to clear the other lines and get the copper out of the way and grab the net, the monster surfaces, takes one look at us, sees the copper next to it, swims around the copper which cuts the mono, and off it went, combo and all. I thought Fitz was going to throw my rod overboard. Given the size of the king and the pure strength it showed, it was definitely a Top-10 derby fish. No doubt in my mind. It took us both about 10 minutes to calm down and reset everything. Was quiet the rest of the time on the water. Headed in around 1pm. Still frustrated about the big loss, but hopefully be on the water again in the morning in search of Bubba. -
43 Lb. not in derby !!!!

We were up with the kids last weekend, but never made it out Saturday before the BIG windstorm Sunday. Everyone was happier to relax on the shore for the day and kick back some adult beverages while the kids played in the lake. I'll be up this weekend with my team for the final weekend of the derby. I'll try you on 78 while we're out. You be up? If so, maybe swing by the dock and introduce you to Mike. Guy is hooked on salmon fishing!! -
Well, I may have to throw a few BW's on this weekend and give it a go!
-
A lot will depend on how the lake settled down after last weekend's storm. The winds were out of the north when we left on Sunday. If you have a temp probe, that may be the way to find the salmon. I have a feeling we'll all have to go out a bit deep to find them this weekend, but they are there....and they are BIG!!!!

Cell phone carriers and service strength on the lake
Misty IV replied to Misty IV's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thanks for all the replies so far. My brother also has Sprint and while he was at the lake last weekend, he said he had absolutely horrible phone service, which was unusual for him. He has the new HTC EVO 4G and is has worked fairly well this year up there, but for some reason he had nothing all weekend until he got out to I-81 headed home. His wife has an iPhone and they had to use hers all weekend for communication chores. One thing I would definitely like whatever phone I get is to have the capability to do radar, as Gator does. My current phone does fairly well......when I have service. Looks like I'm leaning towards Verizon & AT&T. -
I'm feeling some of the frustration others have expressed regarding Raymarine's tech service. I just called them to see what the status of my unit is. The tech advised me they received it on 8/1/11. It is scheduled to be bench tested sometime this week and the tech who works on it will call me to let me know what it will cost. Um, I already was told what is wrong with it back on 7/27 and what it will cost when I called them. Sounds like I will be lucky if I have the unit back by the time I put the boat away for the winter at this rate...

Cell phone carriers and service strength on the lake
Misty IV replied to Misty IV's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Interesting you mentioned the Sprint wanting to go to Canadian, as mine has done that a few times this year. Very rarely is it ever on the Sprint Network - always on roam and it kills my battery. I have to make sure I carry a phone charger cord on the boat all the time. [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Cell phone carriers and service strength on the lake
Misty IV posted a topic in Open Lake Discussion
I will be in the market shortly for a new cell phone, preferably a smart phone with the Andriod operating system. I am not ruling out an iPhone. I currently have Sprint with a full data service pack and have a lot of issues regarding service and constant roaming while I am at the lake along the shoreline at the house, as well while I am out on the lake. Many times while on the water I have absolutely no service at all. Along Rt3 through Mexico, Port Ontario & points east, I have no problems at all. I went to Sprint, Verizon & AT&T's websites to look at their coverage maps for the eastern shore, mainly the Mexico, Oswego & Pulaski areas. Some areas are good, some aren't so good...and this goes for all 3 companies. I'm looking at input from everyone who uses these service providers, as well as others. My cell is my phone at the lakehouse and on the water. I need a reliable phone with good to excellent coverage and signal strength. Thanks for all input & suggestions! -
I received some disturbing news today from my contact for Oswego County. He found out (through the grapevine) that NYS Government will be taking the authority away from localities if they can get a good return on "green" energy. Expect a play soon by State for offshore Industrial Wind. Seems we're not out of the woods just yet. Has anyone heard anything about this? My contact said this was kind of a backdoor announcement that he wasn't expecting to surface. Regardless, we all need to pay attention to the state government and watch this closely in the upcoming months, especially over the winter when alot of secret schemes appear and surprise us all in the spring.
