  1. Prior to getting my 221 Islander, I fished the lake out of an 18' center console and it did fine. I upgraded just because I needed more room and something that didn't require me to come in when the waves got bigger than 3 footers. You'll be fine. As mentioned above, watch the skies, winds and have all safety gear onboard and ready to go.
  2. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 9/4/11 Time on Water: 6 hours Weather/Temp: Cloudy, overcast, sun, 70 Wind Speed/Direction: variable Waves: 0-5' rollers Surface Temp: 68 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 6 Total Boated: 1 Species Breakdown: King Hot Lure: Green Bikini flasher, Green Crinkle A-TOM-MIK fly Trolling Speed: 1.7 - 2.5 Down Speed: 1.5 - 2.2 Boat Depth: 90-160 Lure Depth: 50-110 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== We knew the severe thunderstorm watch had been issued, but ventured to the launch anyway. The skies didn't look threatening. On the water around 7am, battled some waves heading out and set-up in 85FOW due north of the Mexico Point launch. A lot of marks from 50 down to the bottom. Took advantage of the 3-rod rule today. Had (2) 600' copper lines out and (4) rigger lines down. Had the above mentioned green bikini/A-TOM-MIK combo on (2) riggers and tried some other combos on the other (4) lines. Hard to find any decent temps, but heard kings were appearing in the 60-65 degree water. Trolled north to 120FOW, then turned west towards the plant. Things were slow until about 9am when the green bikini combo fires and we land a small 6.5lb king. Dropped that combo back down. Had one copper hit shortly afterwards but lost it about 100' from the boat. Had the riggers fire a few times but nobody home. Finally, about noon, the same combo that caught the earlier king trips at 65 feet down over 150FOW and appears it was a false release. Not!!! Waited a few seconds and the rod tip bent down to the water and the reel starts screaming. Fitz, my crew member, grabbed the rod and starts to reel in. As I am trying to clear the other lines and get the copper out of the way and grab the net, the monster surfaces, takes one look at us, sees the copper next to it, swims around the copper which cuts the mono, and off it went, combo and all. I thought Fitz was going to throw my rod overboard. Given the size of the king and the pure strength it showed, it was definitely a Top-10 derby fish. No doubt in my mind. It took us both about 10 minutes to calm down and reset everything. Was quiet the rest of the time on the water. Headed in around 1pm. Still frustrated about the big loss, but hopefully be on the water again in the morning in search of Bubba.
  3. We were up with the kids last weekend, but never made it out Saturday before the BIG windstorm Sunday. Everyone was happier to relax on the shore for the day and kick back some adult beverages while the kids played in the lake. I'll be up this weekend with my team for the final weekend of the derby. I'll try you on 78 while we're out. You be up? If so, maybe swing by the dock and introduce you to Mike. Guy is hooked on salmon fishing!!
  4. Well, I may have to throw a few BW's on this weekend and give it a go!
  5. A lot will depend on how the lake settled down after last weekend's storm. The winds were out of the north when we left on Sunday. If you have a temp probe, that may be the way to find the salmon. I have a feeling we'll all have to go out a bit deep to find them this weekend, but they are there....and they are BIG!!!!
  6. Thanks for all the replies so far. My brother also has Sprint and while he was at the lake last weekend, he said he had absolutely horrible phone service, which was unusual for him. He has the new HTC EVO 4G and is has worked fairly well this year up there, but for some reason he had nothing all weekend until he got out to I-81 headed home. His wife has an iPhone and they had to use hers all weekend for communication chores. One thing I would definitely like whatever phone I get is to have the capability to do radar, as Gator does. My current phone does fairly well......when I have service. Looks like I'm leaning towards Verizon & AT&T.
  7. I'm feeling some of the frustration others have expressed regarding Raymarine's tech service. I just called them to see what the status of my unit is. The tech advised me they received it on 8/1/11. It is scheduled to be bench tested sometime this week and the tech who works on it will call me to let me know what it will cost. Um, I already was told what is wrong with it back on 7/27 and what it will cost when I called them. Sounds like I will be lucky if I have the unit back by the time I put the boat away for the winter at this rate...
  8. Interesting you mentioned the Sprint wanting to go to Canadian, as mine has done that a few times this year. Very rarely is it ever on the Sprint Network - always on roam and it kills my battery. I have to make sure I carry a phone charger cord on the boat all the time. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  9. I will be in the market shortly for a new cell phone, preferably a smart phone with the Andriod operating system. I am not ruling out an iPhone. I currently have Sprint with a full data service pack and have a lot of issues regarding service and constant roaming while I am at the lake along the shoreline at the house, as well while I am out on the lake. Many times while on the water I have absolutely no service at all. Along Rt3 through Mexico, Port Ontario & points east, I have no problems at all. I went to Sprint, Verizon & AT&T's websites to look at their coverage maps for the eastern shore, mainly the Mexico, Oswego & Pulaski areas. Some areas are good, some aren't so good...and this goes for all 3 companies. I'm looking at input from everyone who uses these service providers, as well as others. My cell is my phone at the lakehouse and on the water. I need a reliable phone with good to excellent coverage and signal strength. Thanks for all input & suggestions!
  10. I received some disturbing news today from my contact for Oswego County. He found out (through the grapevine) that NYS Government will be taking the authority away from localities if they can get a good return on "green" energy. Expect a play soon by State for offshore Industrial Wind. Seems we're not out of the woods just yet. Has anyone heard anything about this? My contact said this was kind of a backdoor announcement that he wasn't expecting to surface. Regardless, we all need to pay attention to the state government and watch this closely in the upcoming months, especially over the winter when alot of secret schemes appear and surprise us all in the spring.
  11. I have an Islander 221 and have (4) Cannons mounted on the transom of my boat. I use the Traxstech mount system with a backing plate under each mount. Very solid and durable. For a kicker mount, I have a Garelick bracket. I steer the kicker through my main steering system with an EZ-Steer kit.
  12. Great video! Always nice to see kids fishing with a huge smile on their face!
  13. Nice job! Sometimes the solo trips are more fun than when you have people onboard [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  14. I have an Islander221 with the 4.3L V-6 and I go through maybe 10 gallons during an average full day of fishing. That includes running out to the fishing grounds and back in to port.
  15. We saw a ton of them floating Saturday off of Oswego during the LSR Challenge. It was really weird, as they appeared out of nowhere and were located in a small area covering about 1/2 mile. The seagulls were having a party!!! But, as we trolled through that area, the copper rods got busy!!!
  16. And, of course, the battery cannot be replaced without sending it to Raymarine. How convenient. Oh well, guess I'll have to bite the bullet and send it in to them. Hope they can turn it around fairly quickly. Pain not having waypoint capabilities to return to my "hot spots". Thanks for all the replies and help!
  17. I called Raymarine tech support and they offered me the following suggestion. Hold in the "Clear" button while I push the "Power" button. Release both buttons when the unit turns on. When it comes to the start-up screen, press the "Enter" key twice and he said that should correct the issue. It will erase all my waypoints, as this is the Master Reset function, but I should be good to go. Going to try it this weekend and see if it rectifies the issue.
  18. The other thing it started doing early in the season is it would connect to the satellites and give me correct coordinates, but the map would put me over Africa and not over Lake Ontario. I would have to physically scroll up and over to Lake Ontario and when I got to where I should be, the icon of the boat was there over the open water. The unit does have the Navionics card for Lake Ontario in it. Looks like I'm making a call to Raymarine.
  19. This weekend, I was running without my Raymarine RC425 GPS Chartplotter because of an error code. It worked fine 3 weeks ago, but when I powered it on this weekend, it froze-up and gave me the following information on the screen: * CODE = 00008001 * * ADDR = C0013F54 * <> PRESS [POWER] TO TURN OFF I tried turning it off and on a few times, even disconnected the plugs and reattached them with no change. I did a quick search on Gooogle, but not coming up with any definite answers. Power and grounds are fine. All connections tight. Can anyone shed some light on this before I call Raymarine direct? Thanks!
  20. As of last week, the lake was OVER the standardized levels the IJC approved back in 1958. If memory serves me, the high level is somewhere around 247 feet and it is well over that mark. At our house, the lake is normally about 10 feet away from our breakwall. 2 weeks ago, the water was maybe 6 inches away. The big gale storm had waves coming over our wall and crashing on our front lawn. All around us, homes without any form of protection suffered property damage. My neighbor had a section of his wall pulled away by the waves. There is no sign of the lake level going down. If they don't do something soon, the eastern shore will suffer catastrophic damage in any more storms, especially the 3-day blows we are so used to.
  21. For those interested, this is the style of solenoid I use. It has a rubberized coating to help protect it from the harsh environment associated with the lake and being on a boat getting bounced around. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=109396&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=10109&subdeptNum=10598&classNum=11289
  22. Excellent report & glad you retrieved your rod!! I, too, was surprised there weren't more boats on the water over the holiday weekend. There were plenty of wave runners off our shoreline and saw a few boats out deep, but definitely not what I would have expected.
