  1. me and my girlfriend had great time fishing the derby.we never ended up placing anything but had a few on the board for awhile. it was fun...there use to be a bunch of these type and similar smaller derbies across the lake back in the 80's and 90's which have disapeared. our appreciation goes out to the orleans county rotary club for keeping the tradition alive and we look forward to next year.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

  3. that's a big brown,scott. we got a late start sunday due to the dire forecast. went out of braddocks at 10 a.m. think that might of been you off the point and we started in front of you then turned back to the east. temps were great for them in the shallower water. wish we would have got out sooner.had to quit after 2 hrs due to the storm.yesterday it was back out to 100 f.o.w. gotta get them when you can. here today gone tomarrow. good luck with that fish.

  4. thanks for the tip ray...i'll have to check mine to see if it has the adjustment screw. i've got the model 800. at least 20 yrs old i would guess. i go thru batteries frequently because i like the strong signal and it starts to waiver below 100 f.o.w. or if there's undercurrent and blowback. i think if you're fishing cold water it kills them quicker too.

  5. thank god something is eating the fleas. the lakers are probably huge because they are the only thing eating the gobies. from what i remember the lake o. program began as an offshoot of the michigan program which has been mentioned as gone downhill as far as size. also from what i remember the salmon were also reared at the caledonia hatchery and the largest realeases were at the oak and genny and the tribs between them.the oak use to be the hot spot to go in the fall and anyone that was around back then will remember that is where most of those 40lb. monsters were caught.then the program moved east and the altmar facility was built.probably has nothing to do with the downsiizing of the salmon since it already was happening in michigan as well.hopefully our dollars spent on the fishery will be utilized wisely whether it's to the east or the west and we can maintain what we got which is still very good.

  6. thanks for the pic. very nice fish. as far as those days of the early 80's and the big kings i disagree with it happening again.the amount of bait or fishing pressure in the lake has nothing to do with it.someone could catch a 40 lber. but it would be a fluke.it's all about the genetics and those genetics are gone. doesn't matter whether it's natural reproduction or artificial reproduction at altmar the genetics are the same. i would be interested to hear how the salmon of those days are going to return without nationalized health care. :(

  7. hope you get well soon. a bit of nostalgia. you were the reason for me becoming a member. after being a lurker i saw you and ray going back and forth about the super bowl 2008. couldn't believe you would pick the giants in a low scoring game. :o . had to jump in on that one but needed a login name. couldn't think of anything but the g.f. just happened to be delivering me a beverage and that was it. our little joke at honeoye where she whips me everytime.

  8. honeoye is very good choice for good tasteing walleye as well as oneida and conesus.much better than the lake ontario fish i.m.o. as mentioned a jig tipped with a worm is a good choice or trolling at night with a floater stickbait above the weeds can be productive also.

  9. i don't need the hassle either and already have the license and like fishing over on that side so i called the local office in rochester. they knew all about the I68 and confirmed everything R.R. said. the good news for me and the reason i called was to see if i can pick up one here beforehand. you can get them also at the customs office at the monroe county airport. they're open 9-5.

  10. i know it was brought up before but can't remember if it was resolved and can't find the old topics and posts.i'll be fishng the spring derby with my g.f. and she doesn't like bringing fish in on the dipsies which i prefer to use. can i reel the fish in and then hand off so i can net. if so who would enter the fish if it was to be on the board ?

  11. I have never stayed in the motel, just live in Youngstown. I hear it's your typical motel in a small town. Clean and nothing fancy. The guy that owns it, Bruce, has always been pretty nice to me.

    bruce is great and it's afine place to stay. been doing the whole spring derby there for about 10 yrs. going just for the weekdays this yr.didn't get a dock at the marina for the first time in a while. so will be launching. just a short trip to the fort and everything you need is within walking distance.great place to stay but i doubt you'll get a weekend night this late of time. give him a try tho soon if interested. line guyi bet i talked to you a bunch of times over the past few yrs. they still got the baked goods and coffee. :yes:

  12. i agree with the less can be best philosophy. especially when it's just me and the g.f. :) there's plenty of times i'll just run the 2 dipsies without ever putting one of my 4 electric downriggers in.it's the quality not quantity that is my belief to catching the bigger fish. i don't keep them anyways so don't really care how many i get. then again it is a numbers game so there is the arguement for that. personally i don't care how many rods people use as long as it is in reason with the traffic. pretty soon you'll see them out at the red can with there planer boards spread out 50 yrds on each side and 800 ft. of copper out the middle and waving like fools. :rofl::rofl:

  13. A friend of Mine "won the boat" "FIRST PRIZE" one year. He got hit with the income taxes on the list price of the boat. His teammates? wanted their share of the prize. He asked them to come up with their share of the income taxes, he would sell the boat for what they could get, and then split up the proceeds. Needless to say, no one came up with the income taxes, the boat sold for 50 cents on the dollar on the list price and to this day six guys do not talk to each other. The hardest part was the loss of the friendship for all of them. You can win the contest, but do not get your friends involved and clearly understand all the consequences if you do win. It is best to allow the guy who catches the winner keep the prize and let him deal with the taxes.

    thats why it's nice it's all cash now. makes things simpler. we also won a boat back in the early 90's. fortunately it was just me and my dad so things didn't get ugly and nasty.i won't go into all the details but will say we didn't have to pay taxes on the list price.hopefully your friend didn't register it before he sold and paid sales tax too.also we got lucky enough to catch the fish on the last weekend of the summer derby so we scooped the 2500 cash also in the tournament of champions which helped out with the tax loss. still in the end and in hindsight i think fishinman was the biggest winner in that derby... :clap::D
