    Remember the pictures of the zombie fox-chicken I posted a few weeks ago? I think we figured out what they are. Thanks to the guys on a habitat board I frequent I can now see the young buck spinning circles and kicking his rear legs in the air. Another guy posted a series of pictures that were very similar, but some of them clear enough to identify the animal. I have no doubt that's what we have here. Mystery solved! Although I preferred the zombie fox-chicken or chupachabra explanation myself...

    On a side note - I've yet to find a good game camera in the $60-100 range that has quick low light shutter speed at night. So many of my nocturnal pics are blurry even when deer are simply walking and I've tried dozens of different makes and models of trail cams.

    Do u know the same group of does are still around 80 yards haven't left . Probably a piled up doe over there. It's better just not to say anything Chris your not here u have no clue what's going on

    I just had a train coming and 1st doe busted me and took off and I let the old A5 rip. I know I hit her on the 3rd shot. She fell over but got back up then I lost sight of her. This gun is awesome. Now I'm waiting for some antlers

    You "know you hit her on the 3rd shot" but you are not going to look? What if you wound another one and have two blood trails crossing in the same patch of woods?

    Congrats Chris!

    My luck is still not good big 10 pt killed by neighbor Tuesday said well there's still the piebald I'll try for him. Well got a picture of him 2 nights ago, he's busted up all to hell to the point I won't shoot him if I see him.

    Another great season in the books. This was a great thread and I thank Legacy and all the great posters who made it so informative.

     

    After taking a smaller buck on my last bow hunt of the year in 8F and wanting to get some meat in the freezer, I took a nice big doe and a nice eight point in 9H, the doe on the gun opener and the buck sitting on the ground on Tuesday. The eight became a resident buck on my property once the rut kicked in. I saw him multiple times chasing and after the 1st week of November he became a "regular" on my trail cams. Opening weekend of gun was surprisingly quiet, both with deer sightings and shooting. After the inclement weekend weather passed (rain, sleet, crazy high winds and blizzard like conditions - and sitting all day three days in it), Tuesday was a much better high quality day with clear skies and FINALLY no wind!!!! I wound up hitting the ground after seeing a concentration of tracks in and out of a large hemlock woodlot and last light on Tuesday was stellar when he made his mistake trailing a smaller 6 point. He trailed the six point about 75 yards from my ground blind and the six turned around to face him, almost as if they were going to spar. That's when I shot. He ran 75 yards, much like the doe, without a drop of blood.

     

    Both the doe I shot and the buck had lethal internal damage with complete lung and upper heart vessel destruction, but only a puny .270 entrance hole and no exit hole. I switched to Federal Ballistic tip rounds this year, and the fragmentation internally is excellent, but the entrance hole is nothing more than a pencil eraser with all bleeding occurring internally. I will be returning to Remington Core Lokt bullets next year.

     

    The theme this year was a nice rut with many smaller buck sightings, but a season filled with crazy winds and a gun opener with little activity and crazy weather. However, the snow was very helpful in patterning travelling following the bad weather.

    Beware of the "Remington Moment"

    Anyone who has a Remington Model 700 rifle in any variation should be aware of the potential FATAL flaw in the safety mechanism.  The older versions can discharge by simply moving the safety to the firing position without pulling the trigger.  I have one that has done this TWICE in the last 48 years.  I bought this rifle at age 15 in 1968 and on its first target firing it discharged without the trigger.  I returned it to the sporting goods store where it was purchased and the store owner said he would "adjust it" ??  Seemed OK after that for about 30 years until it happened again while preparing to unload at the end of a day of hunting. Luckily it was pointed at the ground this time.  I do not use it anymore.  Remington will repair them now after decades of litigation and fatalities.  If anyone has a 700, DO NOT have it pointed at anything you may not want to shoot when moving the safety.  If in need of repair check out the situation online for return info.  Some refer to this as a "Remington Moment".

    Remington recalled all the rifles with the affected X-Mark trigger (XMP)  and has agreed to fix it for free (they will even pay shipping) - this has been a known issue for a few years. Keep in mind not ALL 700's are affected. Go to the Remington website and enter your serial numbers and you will know if it's a gun with the affected trigger. Do NOT ever ever ever take the gun to the sporting goods store where you bought it to have it "adjusted". As I understand it, some XMP triggers had excessive epoxy and it affected the safety mechanism causing accidental discharge.

     

    Given my hesitation to send any of my rifles in the mail, I put new Timney triggers on all my 700's myself two years ago. Easy job, no issues but the trade-off was $90 each gun for the trigger.

    Saturday eve my oldest son Drew took his first Buck at age 14! I was like an excited kid on Christmas, he was all calm and cool! Ha! Took him with my 270 @40 yards and dropped him with a heart shot! Ironically, this is the same buck he flesh wounded during the youth firearms season. When we went to gut him I noticed missing hair and sure enough he had a nice 270 scar..not deep enough to even bleed as we had NO blood back on Columbus day weekend. Pics are in my trailer as it was snowing like mad. Also Drew had a full orange vest and hat on in the field and we took the tag off for pics. Pics were back at Camp. Tank

    Pretty quiet morning. I have only seen a four point so far. Weather wise it is another perfect day to be in the stand. Wind is the complete opposite of what is forecasted. NE instead of SW

    Do you ever wind map your properties in the off season using talc powder or bubbles? Many times I'll have complete opposite wind directions from ridges, tree deflections, hills causing vacuums, etc, etc. It was quite an eye opener for me after doing this but it gave me more confidence sitting in certain stands

    Hears a question. The rut is on how many days have you spent in the woods prior to this event. Temperature, scent you leave in woods, does in area,moon phase,weather conditions. There are a lot of variables to consider. If it was easy everybody would bag a trophy. By the way how often do you fellow hunters wash your clothes? This forum has been great also

    I have had 20 sits this year on two different properties, on a total of 6 stands. I have seen 107 deer YTD, and 49 buck sightings (not different deer but different sightings). Only two absolute beauties and the remainder have been small 1.5 to 2.5 yr old deer. Doe galore early season, bucks have outnumbered doe 8:1 the past two weeks during the rut. Deer sightings have gone down substantially the more scent I have put in my woods and my first sits in virgin stands have been superb. 

     

    I wash my clothes pre and post season, but try and shower with scent free shampoo before each hunt. I do not wash my clothes after every hunt unless soaked in blood. I always wear rubber boots. I always wear a facemask

     

    I hunt the wind every single hunt, hunt a trailing front when accompanied by building high pressure and I follow Jeff Sturgis' rules on "high quality" vs "low quality" sits. 

     

    I have never followed moon phases because I do not believe in it.

     

    All this being said, given our complex personal lives including kids, jobs, etc, etc, many of my hunts revolve around these restrictions rather than the 35,000 different rules on when to be in the woods.

     

    I have become a much better hunter the past ten years b/c of forums like this and paying attention to details, reading everything I can get my hands on, wind mapping my properties and hunting perimeter stands early season to save my best stands for quality November sits. This has paid great dividends in seeing many more mature bucks and being able to harvest them.

     

    I agree that this forum is great.

     

    To harvest one mature deer is luck, two is even luckier. However, to do it more times than that IMO takes dedication to the sport, paying attention to the tiniest of details, and skill.

    Deer Processors

    Have used Smith's in Marion for 15 years and they are good:

     

    1.) Meat is all boneless with excellent trimming

    2.) They vacuum seal everything which I think is my favorite thing about them

    3.) They make sausages and will add pork and/or beef to your ground

    4.) Hours are poor during bow season (typically closed on Sundays and only open til 5PM on some but not all weekdays)

    5.) "OK" at caping, they left me a little short a few times and beat up a nose on a mount last year

     

    I just took a deer to Uncle Charlie's on Harris Rd. Webster yesterday and got it back today:

     

    1.) Uncle Charlie himself is fantastic, super nice and proud of his work

    2.) Super fast turnaround

    3.) he'll hang the deer if you want

    4.) You can drop off a deer anytime, his shop is always open for drop-offs, you put the sheet on the deer with the type of cuts you want and he'll cut it to your specs the next day or two. For me this was a huge plus yesterday

     

    I used Larry's in Avon a few years:

     

    1.) They were the biggest bunch of @#$%'s I've ever dealt with. Horrible service, yelling at customers, pissed that I needed a cape, etc etc

     

    All that being said, nothing compares to butchering one yourself. It's so fun and you feel like you're "one with your harvest". Not to sound corny, but it's just a great way to get back to basics of hunting and harvesting

    Answers: 6). NOT LEGAL. Your deer must be tagged immediately before festivities begin.

    You are wrong.

     

    The tag needs to be filled out immediately, with the date cut out. However, you are not required to actually attach the tag to the deer until you get back to camp or your vehicle. Perhaps it's semantics, but it sounds like you mean "attach the tag" when you say tagged.
