  1. Spoonfed,

Pollution and climate change hits us all. liberal, democrat, republican and conservative alike. going forward is a lot more effective working together to face a shared danger instead of fighting each other because of politically blown up ,but usually small differences. Believe me ,you in Springfield Mass or I in Rochester,NY will both get shafted equally hard if we do not work together. There is a saying in the  IDF where I served. It goes like this: If you fight divided you hang alone ,but if you fight together you win the war.

If you believe that "someone" isn't making huge profits from tax payer dollars on green energy your not looking hard enough. Take away the free money and the do gooders go away.

I do not doubt that statement, this is a capitalist country after all. Although I do believe believe that green energy is being developed by investment capital with the intent to make a profit and do good at the same time. But I do compare it to the annual 20 billion US dollars that goes to the mostly highly profitable fossil fuel industry. This is not counting the corn/gas/alcohol farm subsidies.

How much corn alcohol do you think will be produced without subsidies? And how much cheaper do you think that food will be if all that corn currently being turned into gasohol will be used to feed live stock and people?

If you look into how horrible the process is for the environment for making and disposing of solar panels, wind mills and Lithium, the carbon footprint is not much different from fossil fuels.  Its another portion of Green energy that is not talked.  They want you to buy into green energy so don't tell you that negative aspects about it.

For now, the alternatives are all limping along. But to imply that wind and solar are just as damaging as fossil fuels is not right. Do not ignore the mountain tops that are blown off in the Appalachians to get to coal veins. How about the rampant black lung disease that comes with mining? How about the water wells in Pennsylvania that were poisoned because of fracking? Or now in Alberta,Canada where the forests are ripped off the surface in 40 mile long stretches to get to the tar sands for oil (the dirtiest oil you fill find on the planet) That oil is the reason for the Key Stone pipe line which transports it to refineries in the southern USA where it is processed and exported to third countries. Or how about the nr.5 pipeline that goes under the straights of Mackinac in Lake Superior? It was build in 1953 with a life expectancy of fifty years but still transports oil today.  If/when that one springs a big leak you no longer need to worry about getting your boat ready for spring. (so far it has had over thirty minor leaks)

Finding the right alternatives is hard but we simply have to bite the bullet or very soon, we will be just another extinct species.

Do not ignore the simple fact that the fossil fuel industry is spending huge amounts of money vilifying any and all alternatives that endanger their profit margins, just like the tobacco industry, the asbestos and the lead industry before them.

I get that we need to reduce our carbon footprint. My concern is the way our government is going about it. Great that we are being mandated to go electric on everything. Where does the electricity come from. Fossil fueled power plants. Great idea to buy a generator to charge your batteries. What does the generator use for fuel. Gas/ diesel.   solar and wind power are making great inroads , but at what cost ? Each wind turbine requires approximately 800 gallons of lubricant, oil. Solar panels are springing up all over NY state. Still have no idea of the cost of maintenance on these panels and no one seems to talk about it   Nuclear is out of the question. We have seen the price of an accident and it’s way too high. We have defeated the off shore wind farms on Lake O , so far   But I’m afraid we are going to lose the battle and the war.

Big changes are about to happen in energy production. There are the truck sized nuclear fission reactors being developed in Britain as we speak. These will help decentralize electricity production. More interesting is the beginning of construction of nuclear fusion power plants. Future prediction has it that within 10 years these fusion plants will start producing nuclear energy without the radio active by products that are so frightful. Just like fossil fuel was the energy miracle of 140 years ago, fusion energy will be the next great step forward.

For now we are experiencing the often painful change of one energy source to another less harmful form of energy production.

Windmills and solar panels do less damage  to the environment than fossil fuels, but they really are only a bridge helping us go to the next stage of energy production.

It would not amaze me at all to see vehicles with small fusion power plants traveling our roads and lakes.

  5. Gill, when the electric boats become more popular, you will see plenty of charging stations in the marinas.

Granted, that fossil fueled engine will be grand fathered in for many years ,we will also see the electric outboard take over. The change over from 2 stroke to 4 stroke was amazingly fast, mostly because of the convenience of never having to worry about mixing gas. I think that the convenience of never having to winterize, will make electric outboards wildly popular and once the battery technology matures we will never look back.

By the way. It is very easy to strap a generator on the back of your pick up and charge your boat batteries while you are cleaning up at the end of the day.

  6. most shops have young mechanics .they only know 4stroke. the lower units are easily serviced. just spray the bolts with penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. Use some heat when you loosen them up .

MOST of all, get yourself a factory manual for guidance. NOT some Seloc. Take pictures while you dismantle and put a big piece of card board under your work space.

    Good luck ,it's not hard.

  7. Planer boards on a 17 footer are very important. I'm sure that you found out that when you move around or walk in the boat it goes in a different direction. The planer boards do away with that problem. But if you stop the boat they become problems. they go where the wind or current takes them. The best way to bring in a fish while using planer boards is to continue at the same speed keeping all the other lines straight. This will save you a lot of trouble, and you may get a hit on one of your other lines because those are still going good.

Cornelius, what’s your take on Drudge?

I do not really have time to read that source. I told you why last year. That situation is just getting worse.

I wish I had time to read it because I hear that although they are conservative, they gather reports from all sources.

I dislike the Huffpost because they only react to tweets and always show counter tweets, but do not contribute anything.

CNBC has Rachel Maddows whom I like as a very intelligent analyst but they mix their news and opinion and represent it as news much like Fox does.

I freely admit that most of my reading is colored by the university environment that I live in. But that allows me to keep news and opinion apart.

I hope to meet you on the water next season.

Wrong. CNN talking points. The price of energy was low for 2 1/2 yrs before the pandemic hit unlike the 8 yrs prior to 2016.

Oil prices were down very much because of over production in the tar sands of the Dakotas. Add to that the pandemic .

It clearly says: "Add to that the Pandemic"

    so I was not wrong,

Oh, about CNN, I use them for news. For understanding it I use NPR

  10. I did not think that I would come back to this thread because it is so filled with prejudice and lack of knowledge. Anyway, here goes.

Oil prices were down very much because of over production in the tar sands of the Dakotas. Add to that the pandemic which depressed demand worldwide. In fact a lot of small oil companies specially the ones that produced oil from tar sands went belly up , although production in those areas is starting up again because oil on the world markets has risen above $80 per barrel

Demand is rising worldwide , but opec holds production down and the prices go up worldwide.

The oil prices in the USA are not independent from world oil prices. In fact the USA oil prices are the exact same as the world oil prices. If demand in China goes up, world oil prices go up and that includes USA oil prices at the gas station. There is no oil shortage in the USA, but big oil will sell to the American market at the world spot price rate which is decided in London and Rotterdam.

So please do not get dragged along by planted misinformation, because it just does not help you in any way.

  12. I do not think that the price of gas is connected to what party rules. Healthcare and education, yes. Sorry but the USA is no longer an island. Part of the problem with gas is that while right now the prices are up, at the same time the big oil companies are exporting gas and other oil products to third countries because because the profit margin is higher (the good old capitalist way). So who is raising the prices? The government or big oil by artificially creating shortages?

  13. Do you want reactions from beyond your echo chamber or do you just want to talk to yourselves?

I do like hearing the honest  truth and I do believe in science.

  14. I agree about the EZ steer. I use one myself on my Islander and it is a pain. Dependent on how the main engine is trimmed up or down the steering angle will differ. Great Sacandaga is big enough to get nasty and an electric motor will not get you out of trouble if the main engine fails. There are automatic pilot steering setups for kickers that will keep you exactly on spot. The problem with Islanders is that, being aluminum, they lay high in the water and the wind easily blows them around. I find that I often have to use the otter boats to make a straight troll track

  15. Most Islanders have 12 volt setups and all the ulterras that I have seen are at least 24 volt. That might cause a problem. Also, the electronics in the ulterra  (fishfinder and stuff) may mean that you double up on those.. If you are going to spend $2300 on an extra motor on an Islander you might as well buy a 9.9 which will give you a lot more power.

  16. In Seneca Lake specially on the south end there are old salt mines underneath the lake. These mines are currently used to store natural gas. I think that quite a bit of natural gas probably leaks through the bottom of the lake and leaches into the water, replacing oxygen with methane. But maybe I am paranoid , after all the gas company says that there are no problems. ( like the asbestos, the tabacco and lately the lead people)

  17. So I got the Powrtran Tailfin and it is a disaster

After I opened the package I started putting parts together and I found that the quick connectors on the connector bar do not properly fit because of imprecise milling. I took a closer look and discovered that a tiny allen bolt that is supposed to keep the quick connector body in place on the bar was not screwed in straight and sticking out. It was begging to be shorn off. My conclusion is that it is bad workmanship and very poor to non exisisting quality control. If I would have gone on the water with this piece of manure it would most probably have fallen apart in the first hour of use potentially leaving me with a rudderless boat.

Since I have a Tohatsu which does not have a steering tube I also had to buy a powrtran Tailfin steering tube kit which does not really fit on the outboard clamps where it is supposed to go.

So my conclusion is that this is not a reliable piece of equipment and it will go back accompanied by a big fat negative feedback.

  18. This time of year in the Little Italy Valley is the riot of fall colors. Even if you don't catch even a guppy you will still be blown away by the riot of beautiful sights

On top of that is that store up on the hill going north from Naples. They have the best blueberry pies.

  19. I just did some research on that very subject and after some expensive options I found that a linear actuator is a cheap and easy solution.

    check this YouTube.
