It's way more than enough for hunting. Those ultra-mag calibers can burn up a barrel 5 times faster than a 30-06. Even if you reload, that caliber uses a ton of powder. Those extreme velocities usually work best with extreme (translated as EXPENSIVE) bullets. I reload 11 rifle calibers and hunt with most of them. I got rid of my 300 Win Mag because I never used it. My go-to 30 caliber cartridge is my 30-06. But I also hunt with my 30-30, 308 Win, 32 Special, 35 Remington and 45-70 with a slow moving 405gr slug

Got a good deal on 2 penn 800 fathom master 4' electric down riggers. Got the stationary mounts, but since I will be fishing mostly alone I think I will need to be able to move booms quickly when landing fish. The swivels I've seen on eBay are big bucks. Anybody got a pair to sell reasonably or an idea on how to make/adapt something else?
Try checking a web site I use to search for wanted items. It's called searchtempest dot com.

Thanks everyone! I have all the riggers I need now.

The true material of the cannon booms is sch.5 stainless pipe... The OD is a perfect fit to the body...The only downside is the ID is a little off from cannons inserts on the pulley end.... But 5 minutes on a sander and problem fixed..I just bought a 5' stick last week for $25 each...the cannon tube is Proprietary to them never been able to match the ID...sand the plastic of the pulley insert...not the stainless....
I was wondering what the inside diameter of a fence top rail would be in comparison to the pulley insert. I'll stick with a used Cannon boom for now, but I like having other options. Thanks for the feedback!

Todd,
You can make any size you need with a top rail from Home Depot. Purchase the vinyl coated section cut it to length desired. Remove coating from end that will be attached to rigger body. Make sure that you seal the end section first with a good paint. At that time you can add your terminal pulley with cable.
I made one last season to reach over my outboard with gilbracket. My total length is just over 5'8". It's super strong, I run a 14lbs torpedo weight with chamberlain release.
I'll try to attach pictures tomorrow of finished product.

Thanks for the idea Steve!

Now that I know they are 3ft booms I might put longer booms on both of them. I never had a reason to measure them before so I just figured they were 4ft.

I have an extendable boom....your not that far away if ya wanna try it let me know
Do you know the diameter of your boom? You are about 45 minutes from me so I would be interested in seeing if your boom would fit. Does it have the pulley assembly? Thanks!
-
I just measured my booms and it turns out they measure just 3ft, measuring just the exposed portion of the boom from the rigger housing to where the pulley assembly meets the boom. I never measured them before, so I "thought" they were 4ft.
Anyway, they measure about 1 5/16" in diameter. If you measure it with a dial caliper it will measure about 1.312".

I HAVE THE OLDER STYLE CANNON BOOMS THAT ARE 64 INCHES OVERALL.$60 SHIPPED.THANKS
Do you have pictures?

There are 3 types of swivel bases.
1. Ones that swivel 180 degrees lock to lock
2. Ones that swivel with only maybe 6 licking positions, 180 degrees maybe. I'm guessing because I have only seen pictures of them.
3. Ones that swivel 360 degrees and can lock in 36 different positions (622 ASM, I think).
Ebay prices are ridiculous. Be patient and some will become available.

That was my main concern. I added a 3rd rigger to the right of my main motor and I'd like to get my outside rigger a little farther from the middle rigger. It looks like the extendable booms are 53" long, which wouldn't add any real distance over my 4ft boom, but I'll have to take some measurements to confirm that.

Thanks, I'll check their web site.

I have a fixed 4ft boom on each of my Cannon Mag 10A riggers but I would like to get a longer boom for my starboard rigger. I've seen a 5ft boom on some older Uni-Troll riggers but not on the older Mag 10A's. I'm just looking for one longer boom. Thanks!
4ft was a guesstimate, they measure 3ft.

I've been using Rain-X brand anti-fog solution for decades. I think they call it Fog-X, it comes in a black bottle rather than the standard yellow bottle. I use it on the inside surfaces of my car, truck and boat windshields.

There has been some great fishing reports already this year, and I think that is a good indication of how things will continue. The fish and wildlife should all benefit from this mild winter. I expect a better season than last year.
My only prediction for this fishing season is that it will be unpredictable

It has snowed 3 days in a row now, and its getting into the mid teens at night. Combine that with wind chills close to zero and it feels more like February. It looks like the water temps will stay low on the eastern shore well into late April at this rate. It seems strange to have such a mild winter, only to be followed up with a cold "spring". Makes me wonder how it will affect fishing Lake Ontario and the smaller inland lakes.

Nice looking boat! She has lots of potential in the rights hands.

Northeast, sorry. Great lakes covers the Midwestern states, I think.

I use the Lakemaster Plus, and I think I got it on amazon. I use the same card in my Helix 5 DI GPS and my 859 DI GPS.

Hi I got one penn manual with a short boom I'll sell for 35 $
Thanks for the offer. The other member above who offered 2 riggers for $150 never answered my PM so I bought one on ebay last week.
What condition is yours in? Can you send pictures? I could always use a spare rigger for the right price and in the right condition. Does it have a rod holder and a base? Thanks again.

I'm glad my old Mag 10A's have the short stop feature. I would have never thought to adjust the drag the way you did, Les. Good idea!
Boat/Motor stolen

That sucks! I hope you get everything back in tact, and real soon. Maybe post pictures on CL and all over the place. Once the DMV lists the boat as stolen, no one will be able to register that hull ID number.
Sometimes it is someone who knows you, or someone you know. They know what you have and what your schedule is.
