  1. Transient slips are available and selling like hot cakes at the Port of Rochester Marina.   You can contact Marianne who runs the marina.  She is offering $1.75 a foot per day and will put all the fishing boats together.  This is a top notch facility and she looks forward to providing a great experience for visiting teams.

She did tell me that it is a "first come, first serve" so reserve your slips asap.  Here's the link:

  2. The Genesee Charter Boat Association got together to replace some netting and put them in on Monday 4/17/17.

Many more captains were involved than are pictured.....I dropped some pictures by accident.  Captain Rich Hajecki and Alex saved the day after a trip and he noticed that the pens had blown off the trailer.  Captain Matt French drove in from Greece to help save the pens.  Captain Sam Zucco (the club president) also came down to help.

Not pictured was Captain Rick of Sharkbite, Bulldog, Captain Mark and I forgot the name of the guy to on the right in the second picture.  He is an awesome fisherman who has won many trout derbies!!!!  Please post your name so I can give you credit.  Anyone that I missed, sorry!  Please post.

We will be doing a kids fishing seminar in May some time.  I will post when the fish come!  Tight Lines.

  3. Genesee Charter Boat Association's Annual Flea Market 3/19/17

That's right folks!  Come on down to the massive angler's flea market at the Point Pleasant Fire Hall (right off of 590 north) near Sea Breeze (Rochester NY) Sunday 3/19/17 from

9 a.m until 3 p.m.  Rods, reels, lies, lures, lies, antique gear, lies, line.....something for everyone including lies about fish that may or may NOT have been caught!

Last year I was able to corner the skipper of Rabid Weasel (YSM) who was gracious enough to explain the finer points of goby angling, filleting and preparation.  Before leaving, that same skipper ran over someone's copper and managed to tangle up 3 rod and reel combos; all this and more at the GCBA Angler's Flea Market.

Please don't try to sneak in before 9 a.m. because the Department of Constipation (D.E.C.) has brought back SNAGGING for this event and the door guy will have a coffee can of snag hooks (ala Matt French), 50 lb test (from the sailboat bargain bin at Woolworths), and had bean borritos for breakfast.

  4. How does wind direction effect the Rochester Basin?

Next Tuesday, March 7th at 7 p.m. at the Irondequoit Fish and Game Club this question and anything else you've wanted to ask can be answered by some of Rochester's top captains.

This event, brought to you by the Genesee Charter Boat Association is literally a chance for anyone to ask questions and learn about the Ports of Rochester and Irondequoit's awesome fishery.   You will also learn about our trout and salmon pen rearing program and have a chance to sign up as a volunteer to help with it.

There's still no substitute for hours on the water, but the next best thing is researching, reading, listening and asking questions!   The 4 captains on the panel are awesome guys; down to earth guys and flat out LOVE fishing.   These are the same guys I follow on facebook, twitter etc.  I gobble up their weekly reports. I, for one, will be listening and learning from them and you.  I have a feeling we will all come out of this better anglers. This is a free seminar about spring and early summer trout and salmon fishing.  If it goes well, there will be more!

Stay tuned for a kid's fishing seminar in May by the Genesee Charter Boat Association.

  6. The alevins have mostly consumed their attached egg sacs and are swimming freely around.  About 1/2 the fry have left the basket and are swimming in the aquarium.  The kids are adding gravel a handful at a time a couple times a day so the fish don't get shocked.

I'm amazed at just how fast and agile they are after only a couple of weeks.

We have 2 very large aquariums that we will begin pumping  water into with a 2-way hose outlet coming off our chiller.  We will add another pump as well to create an artificial current.

This next stage of development has been interesting and only 3 or 4 died before consuming their egg sac.  Interestingly there is one little fella that seems to have a very curved body but he is quick.

We are waiting to see the growth difference between those who left the hatching basket early to swim freely in the harsher turbulent water of the open aquarium vs the fish that are 'chillin' in the egg basket still.

  7. When I came in this morning the water temperature was exactly 52 degrees and this was great news. The chiller is doing it's job and the kids were rewarded with thriving brown trout alevins.

In two weeks, we may have a few that begin swimming up out of their egg basket to feed.

Of the approximate 150 eyed eggs we now have around 130 alevins.

  8. So far I am super psyched with the Okuma Komodo.  I've only used it for 2 weeks but It is the best reel I've owned.  Silky smooth, great casting distance and easy to use.  I love the bait clicker too.  I'm using it for float fishing primarily but it's been great as a casting reel chucking spoons and stuff.

  9. For the first month or so the alevin (which are newly hatched trout) will feed on their still attached egg sac.  When the egg sac is consumed we will begin feeding them food from the hatchery.

They are still in their egg basket which the class made.  The egg basket is your basic 10 x 8" storage bin with fine screen glued in.  It floats perfectly.

The stronger alevins are supposed to swim up and out of the egg basket in a few weeks.  The gravel (similar to Irondequoit creek) is going in next week.

Kids from kindergarten all the way to 6th grade are visiting the trout and asking a ton of questions.
