Laker poop is "#2" on my list. We had a fish hatch today at around 9:30 a.m. The kids are psyched and we are hoping for more tomorrow. Only 3 dead eggs after 24 hours out of around 150. We are hopeful. The temperature is slowly inching down toward that 52 mark with the assistance of ice bottles being added a couple times during the school day. The chiller is working!
I tried to take a picture of the little elvin, but it's hard to see. Here's the picture anyhow.

Interesting question. I am running about a gallon of hatchery water and the rest is straight up spring water without any chemicals. Right now, I have no gravel in the aquarium but after they hatch, I would like to use gravel from Irondequoit Creek where they will be released in the spring, however I will be asking the hatchery folks about this before I do it. I have converted the entire rear of my classroom into aquariums to experiment with. We have 3 large set ups and the kids will control the variables in the 3 tanks to compare behavior and well being.
The one constant will be the continuous flow of chilled water circulating through the fridge.
Here's a picture of a nice lady clipping a laker. These were fingerlakes variety. They are kept in deeper runs with dark screens covering them to protect their sun-sensitive eyes.
The other picture is the "Clarifier". The tanks were being vacuumed and all the fish waste is collected there. A local farmer raves about this being spread in his field.
I'll have the kids find out answers to your questions.

I picked up around 150 eyed brown trout eggs today in Bath NY. The facility is great and the people were knowledgeable and nice. Ken was super helpful and set me up.
The set up to keep the trout is not cheap and I needed to improvise. My son and I built a chiller out of a dorm fridge and 100' of garden hose. The way it works is; the hose is coiled through the fridge. We ran a ball valve to adjust the flow coming out of the fridge. This allows water to stay in the fridge longer or shorter depending on the temperature. Eggs like 52 degrees.
Here's pictures and I will update on how it goes.

I'm proud to say that my 3rd graders will be the first class in our school to participate in "Trout in the Classroom". We have an effective, yet primitive set up for our classroom.
On Tuesday the 18th, I'll be driving to Bath NY's hatchery to pick up our 100 eyed brown trout eggs. We will then place them in our aquarium set up in the classroom and await the hatching of our browns.
I have an effective set up but I would have preferred a better chiller. Does anyone out there have an aquarium chiller we can borrow for the experiment. We will return it upon completion. The temperature we need to maintain is 50's.
I will be posting updates on the experiment along with pictures of the progress.

A cross reference is for a 69 Chevy Nova. That may help you some. I would call Bill at Independent Marine. He is a wizard and knows that engine extremely well.

I think you did a fine job!!!! They look terrific and I will be ordering for sure. Nice job!

Folks, if you want to register on line, you can reach Eric on the link. He has set up a "Go Fund Me" for the fee.

Hello folks. The American Cancer Society is hosting the first annual "Lure for a Cure" fishing derby. The headquarters is at Silk O'laughlins in Summerville on the mighty Genesee River. This is a trout, salmon and CARP derby, although if you catch a big fish, weigh it in!
I know we have a lot of carp anglers in the area. Here is a chance to share ideas, baits, and tactics. Come on out to fish, eat and drink!!! Meet Patrick "Can't Touch This" Velyk and legend among legends.
You can register at any time. There are great prizes and fun times in store. Don't forget raffles!!!
Tight Lines and see you at O'llie's!

The Derby is a go this Saturday. You can sign up very easy by showing up Saturday at the Summerville parking lot!

Yep, the Down Jigger. These retailed for a pretty penny in the 90's when I worked at B and E. They spent more of their lives on the shelf than in the water. Does it have the parachute still?
A propeller would turn with the troll which would wind up the string and pull the parachute in. After it reached it's end, it would pop the parachute would cause your lure to slow way down and flutter. The propeller would then speed up the lure toward the "fish".

Hello again. This event will be a ton of fun and a great chance to fish for a cause. Please spread the word about this derby. If you like fishing carp, come on down. You can fish a huge stretch of the river and lake side of the Summerville pier. There's kings staging out there and a very good chance that some will be within casting distance this Saturday, if not, already. We popped 'em in only 40' on Monday within eyesight of the Summerville pier head.
Also, the Genesee Charter Boat Association met last night for our monthly meeting. We are actively planning a much larger event for 2017 for the Port of Rochester. For all you anglers who fish out this way, show your support for this event by showing up and fishing. Many anglers have talked about Rochester NOT having a Pro/Am or smaller tourney like the other harbors on the lake for a few years. The American Cancer Society is offering us a chance to do it! Anyone interested? Suggestions? I'm open for anything in the interest of spreading our sport and getting kids involved. Tight Lines!!! Capt. Larry

That's right, all the cool kids are fishing the Lure for a Cure fishing derby coming up on Saturday September 10th at Summerville on the Genesee River.
This event is a warm for big things to come in Rochester NY next season. This is an amazing cause and it will be so much fun.
If nothing else, bring your families and have fun fishing on the breakwall. There's fish!!!! Plenty and there's food, drinks and prizes.
There will be members of the Genesee Charter Boat Association there to help you with advice, helping kids to learn to fish, baiting hooks and taking fish off the hook. There's fabulous prizes too.
Please open the link and respond to this. Call Eric or email him to let him know that you're interested.
I will be taking some of my students. Lure for A Cure! All the cool kids are doing it!!!! Are you cool?

Around 30 foot back out in the lake. 5 to 10 foot back in a river. There's really no other difference with releases or anything special to do, just don't run cheaters with them.

With J's or similar plugs that have the bead chain swivel that runs through them, be sure to NOT use a swivel....I know the hard way, that the plug becomes a giant lever to toss the hook. Tie directly to the plug.
A deadly technique, if you have the room, is to run it way far back behind the boat off a planer board as a flat line.
My favorites are the "Stairway To Heaven" plug and the Watermelon J Plug.
Sam Zucco of Dream Catcher Charters is one of the finest plug fisherman out there. He seems to pop rods with them more than anyone else I know. He fishes out of the Genesee River and is a terrific guy!
Good Luck

A great resource for the the "golden bonefish" is https://www.youtube.com/user/catfishandcarp
This guy is the best!!! I've reached out to him from his website and he responds quick to help with questions.
I get all my gear from www.bigcarptackle.com They are prompt and have the best stuff.
I highly recommend the delkim alarms!!! I've caught many more fish using these over the other "roller" detection. These alarms have a little ceramic "v" that will not be set off by current or wind, only takes and even draw back bites.
This week's hottest bait has been a basic cornmeal dough ball with a little bit of hazelnut coffee creamer added. They hit that more than the anise or straight up dough. Corn was second. Tight Lines!

I love this!!!! They are my favorite fish to go after and I am proud to admit it. I love the prep, the gear and the methods used. Half the fun is making the bait.
Rochester is hosting it's first derby where carp are one of the main targets on September 10th. Lure For A Cure. I have prizes from FishUSA, Northport Nailer, and many others.
Look under the tournaments for more details.

Check Voyager Marine in Rochester. There's a Sea Ray Amberjack for sale with twins. One of the engines is newly rebuilt. The other may have issues. It's an 85. He also had another engine as I remember.
You may still be able to find the boat on Craigslist. He may part with an engine.

"BTB" Better than Bait available here. http://www.bigwatertackle.com/

The Lure For A Cure derby is a go. We have been supported by FIshUSA, Northport Nailers, LOC Derbies and much more.
Please pass this on to friends, family etc. I love carp fishing and got a nice 32 lber last week. There will be kings accessible off the pier too. I've been chumming the spot for days. I will also be bringing students down. We have volunteers to help teach beginners. Who's in????
This event can showcase our awesome harbor!!! Let's put Rochester on the map folks. Everyone talks about wanting a derby here. This small derby can grow and we have The American Cancer Society wanting us to do this. The town of Irondequoit wants us to do this!!!! Please let me know if you're interested.
It's for a charity and you can win stuff. If you have suggestions, let me know them. I know it's last minute, but that's just how it came about!!!!

Wow! Thanks Sarah and LOC Derbies! I will email you right away. Larry

Here's the updated flyer for a great fishing derby. If you plan on fishing, please give a response or heads up. Larry

We have nearly all alevins swimming around now. So far, less than normal dead eggs. The kids are monitoring the temperature and quality of the water every hour. They are set for the weekend.
