  1. Hi,

Been hunting in lyons area . not alot of geese but most have been decoying well. Just use a small spread forty or less.Seems birds decoy alot better when snow is around, layout blind with snow cover ,hope to get out tomorrow than drive to sodus for divers ,plenty there now, lots of oldsquaw and bills.Saturday we will be hunting the lake, south winds

    :)

  2. Hi,

I bought a used 195seanymph and converted it to a duck boat. The blind starts in front of the windshield and is about ten foot made from 1 in tubler aluminumer and camo burlap, has a 120 evinrude and a 9.9 kicker, dont want to get stranded in bad weather

a good boat so far and can take rough water, winter weather can change very fast on the big lake

    picture on phone

  3. It was slow for us on sodus, got out alittle late and there were many many parties. Big mistake was I forgot to store my wonderducks in the boat.We ended up on the north shore and had very few mallards come by. This area has always been a top spot for mallards.Mostly oldsquaw and mercs. Did see many dead ducks floating south from the breakwall. You could have got your limit without firing the gun.Saw no geese .My son hunted furhter south with a layout boat setup and did well on divers there.many of the layouts did well on oldsquaw.

Well snow and colder weather is on its way for later this week.

Did hear there were many mallards by the canal lately.

Perch fishing is still good at sodus so if the birds arnt flying the perch are there latest Iheard they were deep 40 ft.

  4. I usualy dont bother with sea ducks unless it's realy slow. They dont decoy well into bluebill and redhead blocks. If you do shoot you lose your chance at the good ducks.

Could have had many days with limits of mercs and old squaw.

Many goldeye around .I usualy use just a few decoys for them.

My goal second half is all mallards then maybe a redhead and a bluebill with as many geese we can get.

There are alot of mallards on the fingerlakes now.

    Good hunting Monday :)

  5. Hi,

I found a way to get mallards to commit. I use two wonderducks. One has small wings which also has the independent motors, I paint on side black on the wings. The other one is a larger motor six volt and i use just black wings double wings work well

'I also use magum mallards, goose bodies from decoy unlimited

    with magum herter heads

Most importantly is call when you should, have had few that wouldnt commit.

Good luck, ill snd pics next week

  6. Hi,

This should be a excellent second half season.Little ice is forecast and above normal temperatures for opening day. many divers around now. I purchased a 19 seanymph which I built a boat blind on. It can comfortley allow four shooters .It has a kicker motor along with a 120 evinrude

We should have over two hundred diver decoys for redheads and bluebill. This will be my grandson's first second half

.the best thing about this rig is it is fast and able to go anywhere on the lake or bay

Good luck second half and have a Happy Holiday and New Year.

  7. Hi,

I have had a i/o for two years now. Mine is a 260 mercruser. I drain both sides(plugs). Then i disconnect the power steerting cooler and drain the risers. I changed the oil first and added a storgae additive to the oil.

One thing i found out is you should always lower your drive while in storage. Mercruser states premature failure of the bellows if not done.Have seen many boats stored with the drive up in trailer postion :(

  8. This year lake Erie had a alot of problems with toxic algae blooms. Could we be next.

The blooms are directly related to the quagga infestation

There is a new article on the "save our sodus "web site

    wttw november 15 chicago tonight

the house just defeated more state control over ballast in ships using the great lakes

  9. Saw a recent study by NYGS was said a treatment called bio-bullet is very promising with a 70% mortality for zebra and quagga mussels.

There is alot of concern now that eagles and other fish eating birds are at risk for botulism from the mussels. Loons are especialy vulnerable.

i did fish sunday and fished in close.Did mark alot of fish but no takers.

I did catch my share of mussels though.

there were several boats off hughes in close. Did not get any report though.

  10. Hi everyone,

We have fished the big lake since 1975. Took a break for awhile but this year we spent more time.

One thing I noticed is the abundance of quagga mussels on the bottom even in deep water. The art of trolling the bottom doesnt work very well anymore with these invasives.

I also have a camera that goes down 85 feet and the bottom near pultneyville is covered.

Recently there was a news articles on lake Michigan now supposedly covered from shore to shore. It has devasted the commercial fishery there.

The USGS has a excellent article on this species and the threat it poses to our fishery. They do say a common bacteria shows much promise in controling this species.

We definitly need more money spent on getting this undercontrol now

  11. Hi,

Ive fished the LOC for years.I never heard of the rule that excludes solo fisherman. Went to weight a large brown the other day. I was told I needed a witness to register the fish.

Sometimes it's hard to find a mate to sign up for the derby.Alot of guys just figure they never have won in the past and won't buy a ticket.

Fishing alone is a difficult task.Bringing a large fish to net can be extremely difficult. So why tell a fisherman he can't register a fish unless he has a witness?

  12. : Hi,

I bought a guide gear underwater camera a few years ago, used it for ice fishing. Right now im usingit for lake fishing but it doesnt have much viability. There is a 360 camera but not sure if it would work on my camera.

Would like input on this topic for use on Lake Ontario.

    Thanks

    john :D

  13. Hi,

Fished for day this past week and had pretty good luck on bass. Fished hughes west to bear creekMost fish were caught on the ledges from 15 to thirty feet.Used nightcrawlers set about 18 in of the bottom sinker.

I have a garmin 176c color graph that has helped alot locating fish.

Also had good luck on artifical gobie baits fished right off bottom.

Look for bait schools and you will have the best catches.

Saw a hugh school off the dropoff west of port .i also use a camera locating fish.

    Good luck

  15. Hey guys,

Thanks so much for your input.Im sure alot of people will get benefit from these ideas.

Nothing worse than the flies well maybe sea sickness will turn off new blood to the sport.

I myself will try alot of your ideas.

    Thanks,

    John :D

  16. Hi Dave,

Excellent report. I have a 26 ft searay out of pultneyville. I ran into you last year late when the kings came in.Have fished the area since the 1978.

Caught some large browns this year but waiting for the sharks.

Always had good luck off forman park or the point west of port.

Ill be going out tomorrow to look for those kings. In years past they seem to stay in the same area as long as the bait is there.

If you ever want to go out on a larger boat if the weather is iffy let me know Im always looking for those with alot of enthusism for the sport.

    Blue Dolphin 26 searay weekender

    John

  17. i use a small dodger with a fly below close the ball. . I add a cheater about ten foot just above the dodger. Silver hoards with :D a rattle has been a killer for kings suspended over deeper water. I have caught kings on every pass using this method.

also running diamond kings about thirty feet back with a silver hoard about ten fet above has also taken many kings.

    Good fishing to all.
