Fireline has small diameter and has little to no stretch and in lighter weights doesn't get many fleas. I even switched all my diver rods over to 20lb. Fireline last year mostly because I dont like wire but I was getting less fleas on it. Fireline tests higher than the stated pound test in all the tests that I've seen. I have not tried copper but there are still a few guys pulling copper for lakers so someone should know. I switched all my diver rods over to 20lb fireline, because I hate wire, and seem to get less fleas. Last week my rigger rods with mono down 80 feet were loaded with fleas and my divers had only a few out 200 feet. I put 560 feet of 30lb mono and then 375 feet (125 yards ) of fireline. On Cayuga I have never had to get to the mono. I think it may be too thin and slippery for the fleas to hang on to but am not sure. Sent from my SM-T580 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I like black but at 100 feet all colors are shades of grey. Black will cast the darkest shadow against what little light is reaching there. I also like chartuese, green and glow white. I think that the heavier line, being stiffer, helps the flasher give more action to the fly . Unless you just want to make your own flies as a hobby you will find that you won't save a lot of money. You may want to checkout Iron Dukes flies before you start. I build surf fishing plugs and make my own jigs but I buy trolling flies and Iron Dukes are excellent and fairly priced. One other thing to think about is where you are going to use the boat. If it will be mostly lakes like Cayuga there are enough boat launches that you can get fairly close to where you want to fish so you don't need to run that fast. Also some smaller lakes have horse power restrictions so you need to look into that. As I said before my 20 Merc on my 16' Grumman is fine for what I do with it but I ran charters on Ontario for 10 years with my 25' and felt it was under powered with a 250hp because I made some long runs and would have liked more speed. I have a 16' Grumman with a 20 hp Merc 4 stroke. It's ok but I usually fish alone or with 1 other person and I am not in a hurry. The problem with the 25 is the extra weight uses up some of the increase in power. A 30 4 stroke Merc weighs the same as a 25 and would be he a better bet. I stopped there last Sunday on my way home from Seneca. Guys on shore said it was very slow and I talked to 1 guy that was trolling right out front of the park, he said he was marking a lot of fish but could not get them to hit.
