  1. HI Frank ...... What makes a diver wire or mono is the line you run it on..... a "mono" diver is run on monofiliment line. monofiliment line will only get your diver so deep(like 50 feet down), and mono stretches like crazy so the diver can be difficult to release from the boat. A "wire" diver is just a regular diver run on wire line... you can get wire diver rigs as deep as 100 feet if you let out enough wire line. I stopped running mono divers 15 years ago. To run a wire diver you have to dedicate a reel to wire line, and the rod should have a twilli tip (google it)..... it's a spring wire tip that has to be glued onto a rod after removing the "regular" tip. Dedicated Wire divers and rods can completely save a fishing outing. They are well worth the investment.

I've been fishing out of Sandy creek 3 times this week...... Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I've landed 4 kings 15 Browns and one laker in those outings, and every fish has come on a wire diver! My rigger has not produced one hit in those 3 outings!

    Another good tip.  Thanks Mike!

  2. 900 Series RR is a killer bait. Eastern lake O and St Lawrence River sure produce some world class eyes. The Largest walleyes have come for me trolling for muskie - Biggest was 14# and hit a 13" bait on a down rigger.

As far as mounting is concerned...... If I had to mount one walleye it would be like the attached photo. This was caught through the ice near alex bay, ny this past winter. attachicon.gifImageUploadedByLake Ontario United1409793325.642607.jpg

That fish right there doesn't only belong on the wall....   It belongs in the Hall ..... of   fame  for walleyes.   Did not think NY had a walleye like that! WOW!!

  3. Congrats Frank .....!!! If your divers are twisting on the way down, you're letting them out too fast. Are you using wire divers or mono divers?

Thanks Mike. I did not know there was a difference as to wire or mono dipseys.  I got the number 1 Luhr Jensens. They did not say wire or mono on the package.

  4. How are you letting them out? Free spooling? If you let them out to quick they can flutter on the way down. Just loosen the drag and let them creep out. Check that the weight didn't slide out of place either.

As for leader length typically the length of your rod for netting fish. I fish solo a lot so only run mine about 6 feet and still catch plenty of fish.

I had thumb on spool and clicker on. Did not try with letting the drag take it out.

  5. Need some help with them.  What is optimal length  for your leader? How far to the side will they run?

Every time but one when I reeled them it they were twisted up. So no way would they release properly.

    Thanks for any help!

  6. Larry you were right on the money there.  We would have caught more walleyes if we could have kept the dipseys from

twisting. All our fish came on the downriggers.  This was my biggest ever.  It was a fat 30 incher.  Thanks so much for the tip.

  7. All during the day, it was overcast and rained a few times. The time we were catching them was 10a.m. to 3p.m.

    Sent from my thinking chair...

Thanks for the info. You give us hope that you don't have to fish at night to catch nice fish.

  8. I am making my planer board mast. I have the right sized pipe. I am going to mount it in my front seat

receptacle on my boat.  I need a wooden dowel, circular  2 1/4 inches in diameter 5 inches long.  A  1 inch hole drilled in the center of the dowel so that I can slide the pipe through and  it will sit securely in

my seat receptacle  and not wobble from side to side from pressure of planer board lines. If anyone can

help me out, will be happy to pay for your work..

    Thanks

    Frank

  9. I tried to put a picture in. It did not look like it took. Sorry if it is there twice. When I pulled into the park and ride at 3:30  where I was gonna meet Mike, there was another guy with a big white Lund waiting.  Whoever he was meeting got there

before Mike and they took off. We saw them aways off out on the water.

When I got back to drop Mike at the park and ride, the guys with the white Lund pulled up behind us. Of  course we had to talk with them  They had done really well too.

  10. Maybe a new thread for SBH improvements?

Fished solo out of Sturgeon Point yesterday (which was pretty quiet at 05:30). Managed 2 walleyes bottom bouncing crawlers around Myers , and then took 4 trolling out in the deep water (50+). The last of which was 9+. Lots of sheepies, silver bass, and SM Bass in the mix.....even a couple of trophy perch.

My only complaint on the launch area is it's so damn far! Gotta start driving at 3:30, and even then it's daylight when you get there!

Questions for you regulars around Buffalo......

    1. While trolling out in the deep stuff, every now and the graph would show "baitfish marks" on the bottom....... are they bait or perch?

    2. What do you think about Sam Reinhart as the #2 pick?

Got to give a shout out to Mike Engle.  Had to get up at 2:30 to be able to meet up with him but

it was well worth it.  Was in walleye heaven. Caught 9 and lost two. One of which would have

gone over 10 easy. You know what the bigger ones feel like. This one was taking some drag.

I will dream about that fish.  About the trip.  I had the boat and the makeshift planer board mast.

Mike brought rods, tackle, and his planer boards.  My offerings caught nothing. All the fish were

caught on his home made spinners. He had more than enough rods to fish different depths with

leadcore. We caught nothing off my downriggers.  We could see different packs of boats but Mike

made sure we stayed well away from them. We may have had two boats within a couple hundred yards all morning. We could see the windmills and the fence but kept to ourselves and landed fish.  Mike knows his stuff and it was a day I will always remember because more big walleyes came into

the boat than ever. I have fished St Lawrence many times, Oneida a couple but where we were

tops them all for big walleye.  A world class fishery and a great guy!

  11. Have a look at Paul Jensen's bunny strip hair jigs, clatterbaits, etc. > Jensen Jigs

Tks.  they look very similar  but the one I was looking for had a sort of collar around the bottom of the

jig head. I think that is what gave it the crazy action.  I would love to get hold of a few of those. The Jensen jigs look good. I may order a couple.

  12. Have fished that area many times and it does seem to hold true that the later in the summer the better the

walleye bite. This seems to have changed a bit over the years though because I can remember killing em

by jigging throughout the day. Recently the bite has seemed to pick up in late summer and it would be an

evening and into dark bite by trolling.  Jigging just doesn't seem to produce the way it use to.
