  1. i recently ordered some supplies to tie my own trolling flies. im an experienced tyer but ive never tied trolling flies. here is what ive been doing so far. i use my tube fly attachment in my vice to hold my bullet head. tape two colors of banded mylar together, put a drop of glue on the bullet head, glue mylar to bullet head, rotate vice to spin mylar, glue down, then tie thread wraps over top to fasten down. that process seems to work fine but im having trouble getting a good profile when i pull the mylar back. i get more of an umbrella shape as opposed to a slender baitfish pattern. any tips on how to get a better profile? ive only tried medium cut mylar so far and im thinking that fine cut will be easier to work with. any tips on tying trolling flies would be appreciated. thanks, mark
  2. thanks guys. ill definitely take a look at rod placement, didnt think of that one. the mast will be in a track so i can put it up and down as needed so low bridges will not be a problem. best, mark
  3. hi, i recently purchased a berts double wheel 6' planer board mast. the mast is two piece so im assuming i can have it either 3' or 6'. what is the ideal height for this mast? the higher the better? i have a front deck on my boat so the top of the mast will be approximately 8-9' of the water with the 6' mast. any other things i need to consider to get this rig set up? thanks alot, mark
  4. ive fished for them in the susquehanna. during summers low water period. find "mudding" fish which are actively feeding. its obviously a sight fishing game so clear, calm summer days are best. for rods, 7 or 8wt, floating line and long flouro leaders. bonefish flies work well for carp. best, mark
  5. hi chris, yes i did. i took my HDS into basspro and they put the proper update in and it worked fine after that. the chip is well worth the money, alot more accurate than my original basemap. thanks alot, mark
  6. JF, how do you utilize those mooching setups in your spread? are they limited to downrigger rods where only a short line is used or do you use them for other techniques? do you use a topshot or other method to measure how much line is out? ive always been interested in mooching setups. seems like a fun way to fight a fish with a 1:1 drag and long limber rod. best, mark
  7. rob, sounds like a great way to end the season. congrats. what happened to the soft top??? best, mark
  8. hey cruz, was that you in that sportcraft on sunday late morning? if so, ive met you at the launch a couple times with your last boat and saw you in oswego back in early september. we've had some great laker fun on the north end of owasco this year. best, mark
  9. i was on the north end yesterday and saw quite a few bass boats. must have been pre fishing for a tourney this weekend. they dont have any problem blowing by you at full speed 50yds away. arrgghh.
  10. thanks guys! spoonfed, im with you when it comes to safety. i just need to pick my days so i figure i might be able to get out maybe one day this fall with our pleasant weather/winds.
  11. thanks gambler. point well taken in regards to the leadcore. i need to do some experimenting with leadcore. i thought about splicing a loop into the back end of the leadcore so i can install and remove without losing length. ive done quite a bit of splicing spectra for tuna fishing but im not sure what kind of braid wraps that leadcore. lots to learn... mark
  12. hey guys, id like to use my braided line dipsy diver rod setups for flatlining with planer boards. what is the best way to set these up? i have 200yds of 50# power pro then 20# mono backing to fill the spool. i was thinking about adding a 20-30' 20# flouro leader to the end of the braid and then scale down my leader to whatever species im after(not kings). think that would work? any other ideas? how about setting up a 2 color leadcore on this same rig? id appreciate any suggestions. best, mark
  13. thanks guys, ill give it a try this year. was thinking it would be nice out there without the crowds. as you say FA, if the winds ever calm down target water from the creek/river mouths out to 30-40' or is it shoreline only deal? best, mark
  14. guys, what opportunities are there on the big lake after the salmon are done? are there near shore(within 3-4 miles) trolling opportunities for other species such as steelhead and browns? thanks, mark
  15. i dont have alot of info on that because he hasnt been out alot lately but he did state that the average size for rainbows now is great. same thing with the salmon. im gonna fish the south end in the morning. ill let you know. best, mark
  16. i dont know anyone who has fished it recently but a good friend who is very experienced with the rainbows on skaneateles suggested fishing 30-35' down over deep water. he said its still too early(warm) for the surface activity. i may try it tommorow to get out of this south wind. if i do anything ill post. best, mark
  17. today was another rainbow mission. launched at the north end and made my way south to mid lake and started fishing in 185 FOW. my deepest line was 45' and went up to 20'. hooked a laker at 45' on a dipsy with a dark green dreamweaver spoon. worked my way out to 215' and finally hooked a rainbow!!! landed a small rainbow, maybe 17" on a gold/orange michigan stinger spoon on a dipsy down at 35'. this small fish hammered the spoon pulling a tight drag and jumping behind the boat several times, awesome fish. marked quite a bit in this area so i kept circling. landed another small rainbow on a green hammer michigan stinger spoon down 30'. worked my way out to 225' and landed a silver, pretty lake trout down at 30' on the green hammer spoon. worked my way north and stayed in that 215' range and had a smoking hit on green hammer spoon. drag was screaming, picked up the rod and felt a heavy fish. fish was hot. battled it for a minute or so and then the line went limp. reeled in and found the spoon missing. no doubt a good size rainbow and my biggest ever on the troll. wont forget that one for a while. im hooked on these rainbows. lesson of the day, dont fish dipsys for rainbows without a snubber. been putting it off rigging them and got away without them with mono line but since switching to braid, got me thinking about it so i learned the hard way. this was my first time on canandaigua and man i LOVED the lake. beautiful, that waterfront at the north end is really cool. neat place and great fishing! till next time...best, mark
  18. chuck, a very timely report. much appreciated and nice fish. those lakers are fat! were those rainbows in 45' or 45' over deep water?? best, mark
  19. thanks guys, i called them today and talked to some kid. he said they start charging at 9am and if your there before that its free! i bet his boss wouldnt agree with that. best, mark
  20. launched at long point and fished from 6:30am-12:30. worked deep water all day with my lines down from 50' at the deepest to 30'. still trying to find some rainbows. had one nice hit in 345 FOW down 45' with a dipsy and super slim spoon but lost it after a few seconds. landed a small salmon on leadcore. spent most of the day in 350'. didnt mark alot and what i did mark didnt seem to be too active. tough day for me and the south wind just made it worse. time to switch it up and try a different lake. hope some others got into them. best, mark
  21. hey guys, is that ramp at the northwest end of the lake open year round? is it open at all hours or is there a gate? anything i need to know about this one as i might try it out for the first time tommorow. appreciate any help. best, mark
  22. sean, i appreciate the tips. im gonna take your advice and give it a shot. ill post any success. thanks again, mark ps. do you think they will start moving towards the northern part of the deepwater basin soon? its filthy with bait up here right now.
  23. Hey guys, a friend gave me a box of older spoons and i dug these out of the box thinking maybe they would work for trolling. The two on the left are "BINGO" #0, then Herters Glass Eye Spoon(i also have some old red eyes), then Toby ABU Sweden and finally Gold King Fisher. I like the sizes and shapes of these as i dont have any smaller stuff like this. I thought the king fisher might work well for small landlocks. What do you think? best, mark
