  1. I recently purchased a couple pre-rigged copper set ups from two different tackle shops. I lost the copper section (along with SD/fly) on both the first time I used them. The first was a 500 ft which popped off the release. When reeling it in a bit it just broke, off it went and all I was left with was the braid. I thought it could have possibly been a poorly tied knot. The second (200 ft) broke off when popping it off the release to bring in. This time I knew it wasn't a knot because the braid was still in the release and it had broke a few inches after the release point. Anyone else have the braid break on them? I could see if maybe I was trying to REALLY horse a fish in but this was with nothing on the end of the line. Is it possible there's a bad batch of braid out there? Both reels had green 50 lb power pro. I ran the copper out on the big boards with 2 light rubber bands half-hitched to the braid. I've ran a 300 ft rig for a couple years the same way and haven't a problem.
  2. Might want to try shallower. I was out this past thurs and sun. Went just east out of Olcott. Was seeing the same as you on the graph, nothing. Got a couple fish heading out deeper, cohos or small kings. It wasn't until I moved into relatively shallow water that part of the screen lit up. From about 70-100 fow, picked up a ton of huge hooks sitting right on the bottom. Had a bunch of releases with nobody home but every fish that made it to the boat was a mature king. Had wire divers on a 3 setting w/ SD fly combos out 240 getting most the action. Riggers down 60-70 with free sliders. Never got any lakers. Seems like those were all mature kings hanging out on the bottom. Not sure if things have changed since. Good luck out there.
  3. I try to run spoons from one manufacturer. I've been doing well with NKs. I'll typically run a NK 28 20-25 ft back off the rigger with a matching Mag spoon on a free slider. I have a bunch of DW spoons in some patterns I'd like to try. The nuclear green NK's consistently fire so I'm hesitant on taking them out. Is it really that critical to only be running NK spoons together? I'd like to try some of the DW spoons on the other rigger but don't want to throw the whole program off.
  4. I have a 2005 1950 Tyee Magnum. I've had it in both lakes and the lower niagara, handles both with ease. Easy to tow all over WNY. I love it and its the perfect boat for me. Its the only boat I've owned so I don't have much to compare it with but I've had it out in both lakes in waves 4ft +. Handeled them fine and I was never nervous or concerned. I wouldn't like to fish all day in those conditions, but got me back to the dock no problems.
  5. Yes with flies on the SD. Don't remember which ones exactly but they were a Atomick and all had green in them. The fly on the orange baby SD was a green coho candy. Kept getting kings on it

  9. Thermocline won't be set up yet (but if these temps stay who knows). I usually check the surface temp maps and target areas with steep gradients
  10. I've had a couple friends catch one in the lower niagara. Hooked a good size one last year, jumped quite a bit. The hook bent and popped out. It's become pretty regular to see them in the river.
  11. Finally got the boat shrinkwrapped. Keeping it on the side of the garage. There's some woods behind the house and have noticed quite a few varmint around (fox, skunk, cats, etc.) The shrinkwrap goes around the outboards but it looks like its easy entrance up into the splashwell and into the boat. I don't want to provide winter lodging for the local animal population. I've spread dryer sheets throughout the interior and in every compartment. Is this good enough or is there a better solution to keep things out? Would a little bit of ammonia in the splashwell hurt anything? (ie react with the alluminum)
  12. Was on the bar on saturaday from 7am-1pm. Couldn't get anything to go on the ledge near the red can. Moved out deeper around 230-280 fow and caught about 10 2 year old kings and 1 coho, most around 8 lbs. Came on both flasher/flys and spoons.

  14. Thanks to everyone for the advice. I think I may tighten the dipseys a bit to get a better hook set. Does anyone know any good hook sharpeners? I lost mine in the tackle box I left sitting on the transom as I drove off to the lake. About $500 worth of tackle. Been replacing things slowly and this reminded me my hook sharpener was in there too. I had been thinking that drag setting may be part of the problem. These linecounter reels are new to me. I'm used to my Shimano Stradic 4000. That drag is smooth as butter. I've been using Daiwa sealine's and accudepth's with the wire divers. I have them on 9'6" heartland diver rods. The drags are set so that I know I'm going over 3 mph, I can hear them starting to click and I know I'm going too fast. But when I have a fish on, I just don't like the feel of the drags. They either feel like they are sticking or if I back off, they aren't tight enough to reel any line in. I've just spooled up a pair of high speed saltist reels with 1000' of wire line. I use them on my riggers and just like the overall feel of these reels more. Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Gives me more to think about. I'm used to losing these kings. Been fishing the shore of the niagara for them for the past 15 years with 12 lb mono. Definately lost more than landed but as they say, 'the tug is the drug'.
  15. I'm new to fishing trout/salmon out on the lake. Thanks to LOTSA and this site, i've picked up this trolling thing pretty quickly. I'm routinely getting 20+ strikes most times out now with slow days being about 8-10. The problem I'm having is I seem to drop alot. I'll have them on for the initial run, get some good head shakes, everything seems fine and then they just seem to fall off. I'd guess on most days this happens 50% of the time, esp on the spin doc/fly combos. I had read not to set the hook and I haven't been. The rigger releases are set almost as tight as they go and I don't use a snubber on the wire divers. I understand that some days thats just how it goes with fishing but just wanted to ask if it's normal for these fish to come unbuttoned or are there some things I may be able to do to increase the hook-up/landing ratio?

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):6/15 Time on Water:4:30 pm - 9pm Weather/Temp:sunny Wind Speed/Direction:calm Waves: None Surface Temp: 64 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 20+ Total Boated: lost count Species Breakdown: 1 steelie, 1 coho, the rest kings Hot Lure: nuclear green NK 28/Green NBK spinny w/ Atomik fly Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 2.5 - 3 Boat Depth: 150-200 fow Lure Depth: 50-100 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Tried my first evening trip on Ontario after a lackluster AM walleye trip out of the small boat harbor. Man, after this trip forget waking up at the crack of dawn. Had the best trip of my life. That's not saying much since I just started fishing the lakes last year. I think I may be starting to figure this out a little. Each time out has been getting better and better. Started in 150 fow straight out of port trolling north. First release came within 10 minutes, steelhead. Not much else except for a skippy king heading deeper so we trolled back in. Everytime we went through 170-180 fow the rods would fire. For the second trip in a row, the nuclear green NK 28 would constantly release. The green NBK spin doctor on a wire diver at 300ft was also seeing consistent action. At one point we had a triple. Lost a big king after it got wrapped in one of the wire divers. It took off with my mag nuclear green NK. Just when I was starting to question whether I had wasted A LOT of money on this boat and equipment due to lack of production, I have a day like this, and man is it worth every penny.
  17. This site has Cannon Mag 10HS for $349.99 a piece http://www.landbigfish.com/showcase.cfm?PID=6262
  18. Thanks for the replies. I really like the look and feel of these reels alot so I bought a 2nd one. I thought about copper or leadcore. I'm brand new to trolling (and boating for that matter) and am a bit nervous about using copper. I have a pre-spooled okuma with 300 yds of copper so I may experiment with that first. I may just put mono on for now and use them off the riggers. I learned a long time ago not to skimp on reels when fishing for salmon. One more question. Would the saltist reels be good for wire line?
  19. After reading some reviews on this reel, I picked one up on Ebay at a good price. Its the larger 50 size but the lower 4.9 gear ratio. I only have the one reel and am wondering what people would recommend the best way to utilize this reel, ie. mono/downrigger, wire/dipsey, copper, etc? My current set up is 2 Daiwa SG47LCX w/ 30lb big game on the downriggers and 2 Daiwa SG47LCA on the wire dipseys. I'm new to this so I'm keeping it simple until I get a better handle on what I'm doing. Given the price of the saltist reels, I don't want it to just sit there. It also feels like an amazing reel, better than any other linecounter I've used. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
  20. Name: Craig Location:Amherst, NY Home Port:Wilson/Olcott/Buffalo/Dunkirk Boat Name/Type:2005 Lund 1950 Tyee Magnum I fish for:Salmon/trout/walleye/musky/northern/bass ================== I want to give a huge thanks to everyone here. I've been following this forum all summer and using all the great info to help me learn fishing out on the open water of the Great Lakes (Ontario/Erie) and the Niagara River. I have been fishing the lower Niagara for the past 15 years for trout and salmon from shore. When the popular spots started to get crowded, every year I told myself, 'next year I'm getting a boat.' Wel that next year finally came this past may when I finally pulled the trigger on the boat I've always wanted, a Lund. Although I've been fishing for years, it's all been from shore so the boating thing is completely new to me. Thanks to this forum and to the members of LOTSA (became a member this year), the learning curve has been not been as bad as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, I still have a ton to learn and nothing compares to experience on the water, but out of the 10-15 trips I've made it out so far I've only been skunked once. (Went out with the girlfriend, her first time out of Olcott in 3-4fters, not the best of ideas.) I've mostly got skippys but did manage a 12lb king. I haven't managed any oustanding days but hopefully that will come with time and experience.
