  1. I've used homemade boards on an 18 ft Starcraft aluminum (Big Jon bow mast) and a 21 ft Starcraft fiberglass (side reels) and they've both worked fine.  The best set-up I've seen used is Otter boards run off six-foot side masts - they pull HARD and the extra height really helps the releases slide out.

  2. No reason why both can't have it mounted. Reproductions can be made and both people can have a mount. I have the skin mount of the 34lb laker caught on my boat and Kurt might get around to having a reproduction done some day!

Kurt is growing a perfect reproduction out of hops, which he will then turn into laker beer...

  3. Thanks guys! That event was FUN! The format was really cool, and to be honest the Lake Trout fishing was the most fun! I know I'm gonna take a lot of heat for that. We battled each other on the corner out and downs.

I didn't realize the fishing was that tough. We had no issues getting our bites, and we figured with all the great fishermen out there that they were getting bit too. We were shocked after hitting the scales.

That's the infuriating thing, Rick.  I was on a boat this close to you, presumably running a similar program, and you crushed the fish.  I saw the same last year at the Shootout, between Jolly and his buddy Lou Borrelli.  I'm sorry I'm moving - I'll miss trying to sort it out...

  4. I observed for the first time this weekend.  I did it both for the experience and to help out a buddy who has given me some great fishing opportunities.  My pay was perfectly acceptable, covering my gas and expenses for the weekend with enough left over to pay my share for the upcoming Sandy Creek Shootout, grab some BBQ on the way home Sunday and have a little extra spending cash.  You will not get rich doing this.

What was invaluable was getting to meet a great bunch of guys, watch them fish together as a team and compare with my previous (and limited) personal tournament experience.  I've fished last year's Shootout with Jolly, this year's Wilson Harbor Invitational with Silver Fox and I observed Make the Turn at this weekend's Oak Orchard Open.  I've learned quite a bit from each of them and appreciate having been given the chance.

  5. We caught a 8# bow today off the oak with a red tag. Im almost embarrassed to say, I was my first time getting a tagged fish and had no clue what to do. I didnt want it out of the water any longer and let it go. It had #'s, but they were to small to read clearly. Anyone know about red tags?

I wish I'd managed a picture of it first but we got him back in the water strong and healthy.  Someone else will keep him - and be able to read the tag with younger eyes!
