  1. I saw the Chq Baitfish fund was cancelled for this year. Would anyone care to elaborate on what's going on with it besides what's on the Chap69 website? If this isn't the best place for it, a PM would work. I was wondering if you guys might like to try to organize something with the 3 Rivers Chapter and some of the OH Chapters for the tourney next year. I'm in the 3 Rivers Chapter and know many of the guys from the OH Chapters. I wouldn't mind trying to help facilitate something or at least get the right people in touch with each other to try to make something happen. I'm just trying to figure out what you guys are thinking or planning for the fundraiser, and if this is something everyone might be interested in. I know the end of June date doesn't work for me and probably not good for many other PA and OH guys that fish LSC, but that's neither here nor there at this point. September is probably some of the best fishing, but I don't know how that would work with the timing of when the hatchery would need minnows. I hope to hear from someone on the Chap69 board about this. Thanks, Adam Andresky
  2. Not that i feel your post was necessarily directed towards me, but i hear you old man. I know a couple of us, including myself, have been guilty of that approach in the past. However, the fact remains that the better we all are at handling and releasing our fish as quickly and unharmed as possible, the less delayed mortality and the more muskies there will be for all of us to re-catch. 3. That's cool eviltroll...not trying to be judgmental...just trying to help educate. I just noticed your thread was from last year. So, did you try the sucker rig? If so, any personal observations or success with the rig?
  4. Sorry that link doesn't take you directly to the thread I mentioned. From the link I provided, go to General Discussion, then "quick strike rig reminder". Most guys around here, including myself, think that fishing live bait for muskies is just not worth the risk of killing fish. Also, there's really no reason live bait is needed...all the muskies caught by myself and all the muskie fisherman i personally know, have been caught on artificial lures.
  5. Sucker fishing is pretty popular in MN and WI in the fall, but I don't know anybody that does it anywhere I fish (PA, OH, NY, WV, and ON). Here is a recent thread I saw on this topic: http://www.muskyhunter.com/forums/ The guys at the Niagara Muskie Association are your best bet for learning about muskies and proper techniques in your area.
  6. Nice job Justin. That's pretty deep. Tigers must behave quite a bit differently than pures, but I have little to no experience with tigers so couldn't say for sure myself. We've caught a few by accident fishing for pures in lakes that have both. I typically don't fish or catch pures much below 30' down and that usually only happens in the fall. I do understand they can be deeper than that though. I have a buddy that got a big pure 45' down once...that was late fall also though. I wonder if the bigger tigers use deeper water like bigger pike do the majority of the time. Do you or any other tiger fisherman know? May explain why smaller fish were being caught casting shallower water in the tourney. Also, I know tigers are sterile, but do they go shallow like pike and muskie in the spring and still go through the spawning ritual even though they could never be successful? Obviously, understanding the seasonal movements and habits of the fish we target is a big part to catching them successfully.

    Chautauqua crappies

That's a good suggestion Justin. My family has a farm with some ponds. I need to get my daughter back up there for some bass fishing. I just wish i had some better options close to home for weekday evenings. Tough for me to break away from my muskie addiction on the weekends and my daughter isnt ready for that yet. Chautauqua crappies

We just fished from shore Joe. It was great for the kids because they could play with bubbles or watch cartoons in the cottage if things got a little slow or they just wanted a break. From the way i understand it, those crappies are only in there for a couple weeks around spawn, but I'm certainly no expert. I think you have to time it just right so it was nice to have a friend with a place there and a little inside knowledge. We just used little fathead minnows on bare hooks or jigs a couple feet below a float for the crappies. Are you on a canal also? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

    Chautauqua crappies

Thanks guys. It was better to see the girls having so much fun than if I would have been catching fish myself. The tough part is finding a good place with enough action to keep young kids interested. This was perfect. I don't know that my buddies 3 yr old had ever fished before. She wouldn't take much instruction but was casting like a champ by the end of the day.
  10. A buddy and I took our daughters to another buddies cottage at Chq over the weekend. The 3 and 5 year old girls had a blast catching crappies and the guys had a great time eating them. Bonus largemouth, perch, bluegills, and bullheads too. What a great day! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Cool trip, pics, and report guys. That 48.5"er that was caught was really nice and fat. Looked pre-spawn but that would be weird for down there right now. I imagine most all of the fish were post-spawn down there now right? What were water temps? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. Very windy for us yesterday too and i did get a hook buried in my thumb on our first fish of the day. Good luck today guys. Supposed to be light winds here. One decent fish should put you in the mix. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Thanks old man. The numbers were better than normal for this time of year. Just one of those days i guess. Got our fist one less than fifteen minutes after we started, found a couple hot baits, and hit 2 good feeding windows. Try again today. Wont be long until you guys can start fishing tigers right? 14. We've been getting some prespawn muskies at some of the OH lakes we fish the past few weeks. Dad and I had a good action day today boating 9. Mostly smaller males but a few decent ones. This fat girl was our best today. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Everybody has their opinions and personal preferences. There's lots of good muskie platforms. What will be best for you will depend on your individual needs, where you will be fishing, and your individual fishing style. I like lots of muskie boats including glass. However, I know lots of good muskie fisherman that fish out of 17-21' deep v aluminum boats. In fact, that's the style boat most of the muskie fisherman i know fish from. Todd Young that guides on chq fishes out of the same model 18' Lund i posted the link to. He's a very good caster. Mike Sperry also fishes from that style of boat and i know the original poster has fished with him. I haven't heard anybody complain about releasing muskies from that style of boat. I don't have any trouble releasing fish from mine. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. I agree with Joe about the used boat. We bought new in 07 and if/when I do it again, I will probably look at a used boat. I also agree with Old Man on size for family. You will probably want a 17-19' if you can swing it. You can get a few year old boat that is already rigged and save a bunch of money. New boats are outrageous. I look at this site all the time. It has many boats like you are looking for. You need to be willing to drive to buy one from here though. I just helped a buddy find and buy a boat that was listed on this site. That seller drove and met him half way. http://www.walleyecentral.com/classified/searchresults This boat was just listed in the last 24 hrs. Exactly what you are looking for and more boat/motor than what the Impact was that you sat in, for probably quite a bit less money. http://www.walleyecentral.com/classified/adviewer/55169 That one probably won't last long. Good luck and happy shopping.
  17. Thanks Dennis. Alumacrafts are great boats too. I like the Trophy model, but don't like how they started putting the rod locker door on top of the gunwale. Doesn't leave enough room for track/mounting options IMO. Lots of different boat styles and rigging ideas here. Good thread.
  18. Sweet...some nicely rigged boats. I really like those Hewscrafts and that Parker...different. This is our 07 21' Lund Baron w/250 Verado and Honda kicker. We love it. Small enough to trailer easily and big enough to handle almost anything. Versatile setups for the muskies and salmon we fish for. Also have a full top set for cold weather. 19. Kind of hard to predict what may happen with weather this spring. Sure it's cold now, but that doesn't mean it won't be 80 degrees in March like it was two years ago. I've been fishing for pre-spawn muskies in OH for alot of years, pretty successfully, and we usually start around the end of March. April is usually the best month for pre-spawn pigs in PA and OH. If you want to fish Cave Run and get rid of the cabin fever, don't wait until May. Larry is right though....water levels at the Cave can be challenging in the spring. PA and OH can be tough to find a guide though. If you want to catch some early OH muskies, look up Terry Nespeca on Facebook. Maybe Todd Young in PA, but I'm not sure how much spring fishing he does. Red Childress gets some nice pre-spawn muskies on the middle Allegheny River...that's much closer for you also.
  20. My dad and i had a great time at the show. It was fun to hang out with friends during and after the show. The only bad thing was the travel for those that drove saturday or today. Im a crankbait addict so we bought some ziggies, boss shads, grandmas, custom x's, an alley cat, a marshall custom tackle, and a smuttly dog. I did get one jerkbait. I bought another lunge lumber prowler off dan hughes. He has some neutrally bouyant weighted ones now. We also stayed for the swap meet saturday night. That was cool as well, especially since i won 10 custom made shad style cranks made by Mike Money. Mike is a friend and was pmtt world champ at chautauqua lake a few years back. Also won a mike Hulbert sweatshirt and another marshall custom tackle crank. Great weekend. Looking forward to the two Butler Pa shows. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. I fished there twice one year a while ago...second year of the PMTT I think. I never hired a guide, but know most of them down there. Check out Tony Grant, Greg Thomas, and Crash/Justin Mullins. They all usually have pretty good spring time deals. I think Tony Grant also has rooms for rent. Greg Thomas is full of all kinds of muskie fishing knowledge. Pretty sure all those guys will be at the Ohio Muskie Show in Columbus this weekend, but you would probably just spend more money. Also, I might be wrong, but I don't think there are any seasons or laws of any kind really in KY. It's Kentucky. I know for sure it's unlimited rods down there...a guy could troll 12 rods by himself if he wanted to...just like WV. Pretty lake with lots of standing timber. Good spring fishing, but doesn't suit my style personally. I guess that's why I never went back.
  22. I'm heading down Friday after work with my Dad. It's about a 3hr drive for us, so I don't expect to be there until about 10pm. You have my number, Joe. If you get down there Fri night and want to hang out...give me a call or txt. Always a good time. Last year on Friday night I ended up at IHop at like 4am with Mike Hulbert and a few other friends. Good times. Makes for a bit of a rough show on Saturday though. Adam
  23. See you in Columbus Chad. Is Joe going with you again? Anybody else going to the Ohio show this weekend?
  24. Donating one's time to help muskie fisheries and the sport itself can be a thankless job, and it's hard to make everyone happy all the time. Capt. Larry has probably been more generous with his time and efforts over the years than anyone else I can think of around here. Thanks Capt. Enjoy your free time.
  25. I give these guys a ton of credit for just being out there too. We all know how cold it's been and these guys are out fishing on big water at night. I've fished a little bit like that and it isn't stress free. Congrats guys.
