Yup, my 2 biggest kings this year were in 68deg water. Caught many there this month. Some days they're in ice and some up higher.

One more thing, save the meat program for after you get comfortable with flasher flies and spoons. I catch fish on meat, but not nearly as many as most guys. This weekends tourney I stuck with flasher/fly and spoons. Did well.

You have to target mature fish to catch them

If you are having trouble catching mature fish on your own heed the good advice given an book a charter and ask questions and bring a note pad

Details that seem insignificant and minor are really what make the difference

I know someone who wouldn't be welcome on my boat any longer...then to wait till after it was weight in and listed before you fess up is not cool

Prize structure and payouts need to be addressed.

A lake wide derby with the number of participants should do much better than paying out $50 for placing in the top 20 out of thousands of entrants,the cost to enter is $40 so a winning actual prize of $10 is ridiculous. I realize you know exactly how many entrants you average each derby and season but those numbers are never released because then people will do the math.

Dave should make money doing this after all it is a business and is time consuming,but a larger payout will yield you and he more entrants and a bigger profit in the long run.

You are at a point where many potential entrants are skipping the derby because they deem it not a good enough prize structure.
