  1. I'm going it's better tomorrow morning then. We are going to test our luck. If we can find where they ate hitting. I know where the wall at the shipping lanes are and the finger but not sure where the "mountain" is that everyone speaks of is at on the gps.

From what I know (and have been told) the mountain is closer to Stony Point than the finger...

The crosshairs are on the top of it. You can see the mark for Stony Lighthouse above the blue question mark. It's drops off into the trench. Sometimes the fish hug it. Like the wall make sure your down rigger drag is set loose.

  2. I have an 1802 wa. Riggers on the corners, tite lok holders on the gunwales. I also have rail mount holders, but those are used more for rod/net storage than fishing. Just put a kicker on, used bags before that. Will post pics when I can, my app won't let me do so.

  3. Check Bedford Creek Marina and Campground, outside Sackets Harbor, NY. They usually has a few slips available, they're floating and I drove by the other day. Lots on boats in slips. I used to rent a slip for a week here and a week there throughout the summer. Also did some weekends in the spring and fall.

  4. The winds can commonly come from the SW-ish direction, this time of year. But the lake is big and you could have days of it or some days where it moves around. Look at the speed and direction for your preceding days and go from there.
If you're trailering, you're in a good place to play the wind. The Henderson, Black River Bay, Chaumont Bay Area is great for this. Check your maps for the following, look for structure you like, and you should have plenty to explore:
Henderson: Association Island area, Lyme Barrel Shoal, cliffs between Assoc and Stony Point, if you can make it out to Stony, Calf, and Gallo islands my grandfather used to love to fish it and I've been out there and had luck.
BRB: Bass and Horse island, cliffs and southern shore line of BRB. Sherwin bay on N side.
Chaumont: just check it out, tons of shoals and areas to work. My grandfather always told stories about Cherry island fishing, I regretfully never got to go there with him.
Anyway, this should help you find some places to fish with whatever the wind is doing.

  5. What kind of boat will you be running?

I fished smallies since I was a kid, but haven't focused on them in summer too much in some years (after salmon and trout now), unless I take my 6 year old daughter out. I have a place on the Sackets side of Henderson Bay.

Mainly trolled plugs and drifted bait around shoals and islands in that area. Also, fished some of the rock cliff areas in the Black River Bay and between the cut and Stony Point. Even out to Stony Island and the Galoo Islands.

  6. I'm still pretty new to the game, but was told by a good friend with experience to run 2 riggers and 2 dipsys to start with and get the hang of it. I think it was a really good tip... I definitely tangled, mishaps and got frustrated just running that much.

Also, depending on the weights you choose and current, you're gonna get some blow back. I've had my 10 lbs weights out 175-185 for lakers before. So definitely 200' of wire. I just respooled one rigger with 300' so I can snip a reterminate if I get a fray or pigtail. Got some 13 lbs weights for this season, I have manual Penn riggers on my boat so hopefully I won't have to put them out that far and crank em back in again! Penn riggers have a mounting plate they slide on and off.

  7.
Are the buoys in Stoney Creek visible above water? It can be pretty tricky in that channel if it's not marked real well. I've only been through there once, and that was more than 2 years ago.

Yes the bouys are visible, through the channel and all the way out.

  8. Drove by it Friday night, closed. You couldn't even see the cleats above the water.
Launched out of Stony creek Saturday and the piers were an inch or so above the waterline. That was a nice sight.

  9. Went out for a quick evening troll off the finger. Launched out of Stony. Skunk.
Used a fish hawk TD when we got there. The temps where a steady decline from the surface to the bottom.
Marked bait pods towards the end of our evening, 60-90 down over 130ish. No big marks.
On the way out we had come across marks down 60-80 over 90ish. Should've slowed to see what the graph looked like. On the way in we saw the same thing, so we slowed down to get a better read and marks continued invluding small bait pods. Should've fished there? Who knows!
Just wanted to throw an update on here.
Happy Father's Day to all those dads out there! Tight lines.

  10. I will give it a shot, I'm looking for eating size anyway. It's fun catching the big ones but I toss them back to fight another day

You end up having any luck today? I'm going out tomorrow, don't know where I wanna launch yet. An update would be greatly appreciated.

  12. I used Amish snubbers last year... my brother hung up the weight and the rubber pulled out of the zip tie but spectra held and he and my dad retrieved everything. Very happy about that! He tried to repair it, but couldn't. I just picked up 2 more.

  14. Got off the phone with the DEC a little bit ago... good looks and advice Sk8man!
The provision for salted minnows are for people/companies with commercial bait fish licenses. Personally salted minnows fall under "dead bait fish" regulations and can be used only on the same body of water, within the travel corridor just like fresh bait that went belly up.
I was told that this was done because some people were salting in such a way that it killed the viruses and some people weren't effectively getting it done.
