    Lake Erie

Been a good start to the year so far for resident fish on the PA/NY border (Northeast). Migration still isn't too far east, so most have been to the smaller size (2-3#'s). I have not had to get my trolling gear out yet being most I have marked are in the 25-35 FOW range. Most have come on the "rim" of the lake, that narrow rocky ledge that transitions into the main "mud" of the lake. Right now Ohio is hot. Won't be long before we start to see some of the little "piggy's" around.
  2. Sheephead (drum) are great eating. We catch a ton of them walleye fishing in lake Erie, and we always keep a couple of the smaller ones for the grill. I am not fully sure that I understand why people call them trash fish, and why people intentionally kill them ?? They can be a nuisance when walleye fishing......and perch fishing, but the fight is great. I hooked my oldest uncle onto a 10+ pounder last year and it gave him a real run for his money. Those guys hit bottom and keep on digging. My approach to sheephead : Leave fish whole, trim tail and fins. Remove guts. Heavily salt the inside of the fish. Make 3-4 slits per side on the fish (angled), about 1/4" deep. Season outside. Heat CHARCOL grill to med high heat. Once the temp is in the 400 degree(ish) range, place fish over direct heat to SEAR. Only sear for 1-2 min's. Turn fish. Repeat sear on opposing side. Once seared, place fish over indirect heat and close vents to get around 300 degrees. Add alder wood for light smoke. Cook/light smoke fish to about 40 minutes until internal temp reaches 135 min (I like 145 min). Let cool, remove skin.......eat up ! The meat on a sheaphead is fairly dense, so don't expect it to fall apart like Tilapia. However, in my experience.....it isn't very good deep fried.
  3. Based on some advice I have got here......I went up to 200' of cable and 10 pound balls. However, I have two 8# balls that I will take as well.....just in case. Also, if the max weight is 8#'s........you can run 10's. I bought a used set of manual Big Jon's on here from a guy, and when I e-mailed Big Jon about exceeding max weight, they simply said to not add boom extensions if you want to exceed the weight. They also said it is hard on the mounts - Unfortunately that is all I can offer.....
  4. Too funny guys !!! Kers light....LOL. I imagine Bostonians were pretty infrequent around the Denver area back then. Of course now they are all too stoned to care anymore....... I can picture the propane cylinder swinging in my head.....and I can only imagine the look on your wife's face !! That is classic -
  5. Too funny.....but, just about correct. Not a light beer fan myself, maybe at a wedding when I can't get out of control, but moonshine is usually the flavor on vacation. Beer just makes me tired....moonshine makes me dance. I once walked 3 miles on moonshine to get a couple Whoppers from Burger King for the family........long story, but I am still called the "whopper-go-getter guy" by many around my parts.
  6. Thanks Paul, that is some of the best advise I have been given !!! lol. Plenty of Blue light it is.......
  7. What is it with you guys and blue light......must be the Canadian wind you breath in all day !! No worries on the beer....I would forget my wife before I forgot the beer. Glad to hear you are an Erie native. It says a lot about the fishing in Lake Ontario if an Erie guy moved his business away. I was surprised to hear you say that.......expecially being that the Erie guys are so tight lipped !
  8. Paul - Thanks you for the invitation to talk when we arrive. Also, giving me a starting point helps tremendously. Makes me want to pack up and move closer to Lake Ontario !!! As always, if there is anything I can do to return the favor, please don't hesitate to ask. Even though I don't have much salmon or trout experience, I am one heck of a good walleye fisherman on lake Erie.
  9. Thanks Pap !! I am not too worried about catching myself, but would love to get my uncles onto something good. They are from western Ohio (on the Indiana border), and don't have many opportunities to tie into something large. I have so many opportunities up here in NW pa with Erie only being 1/2 hour away, and Lake Ontario is less than 3 hours. I took my youngest uncle to the OAK last year on a charter boat, and you should have seen his eyes when the Steelhead jumped and did a big tail walk.......I thought he was going to drop the rod !! I get much more out of watching them catch than I do catching myself. We didn't tie into any kings, but he will never forget the 7# steelhead....... I am gaining a lot of confidence from you guys - which I think is the best way to go into new fishing....with confidence. Thank you all !!!
  10. Hawkeye, I think that will be my strategy. I am very familiar with dispy's, so I understand them a lot more than I do riggers. I have learned a few tricks over the years to get them deeper than the dive curve says. Let's face it, it seems like the fish are always deeper than you can get.....but a little experience and trial and error helped me out a lot. The riggers are what has me anxious, but I suppose getting some time using them is 1/2 the battle. Not sure why something so simple is so intimidating !!!!
  11. Thanks so much hawkeye !! I have been to their site about 100 times and never seen that. Of course.....I am not the best at internet navigating. Again - Thanks !!
  12. I have one of those as well.....as long as I can keep him in the boat. He has a tendency to get in the lake and try to bring the fish in !!! There are days I am not in the boat 10 minutes before he makes the big leap.
  13. I assume most of these are visual landmarks on the land ? I am probably asking too much. Understandably some of these spots are probably guarded pretty close by local, so I should probably keep it to fishing help and not more than that. Thanks !
  14. Vetting - Love the pooch in your picture !!! What a cutie !! (the dog, not you)....lol.
  15. These are the ones I ordered http://www.fishusa.com/product/SPRO-Ball-Bearing-Swivels-wWelded-Rings?utm_source=google_ps&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google_ps&gclid=CKSsmNuywcUCFZKGaQod21gAjg I got some #2's and #3's.
  16. The nice thing about the fishing changing in June is that I don't have any April or May experience, so I can't compare one month to the next. I don't know where they are now.....so I don't have a place to start......which will probably work in my benefit. I imagine our first day up will be pretty much scouting water and trying to mark some locations. I plan on keeping an eye on the charter boat guys, while still giving them plenty of room to make their living..... I have made a couple of very good contacts on this site, so I am sure I can get some good advice come early June. I am amazed at how nice everyone is. It's a nice change. Question on the OAK......is it pretty much just open water with no real defined structure ? I have a decent map, so I can see the water drops depth fairly quick, so I assume part of the game is continuing to move around and get a pattern. I am so used to running 10-12 miles on Lake Eire to get to the fish, but it appears you don't have to go too far off the OAK to hit a variety of water depths ? Thanks a million everyone !!! I feel better already !
  17. Thanks guy......as much money as I have spent the last thing I want to do is scrimp on terminal tackle. I ordered some SAMPO swivels, so I hope I am on the right track. I ordered a few different releases, figured the best way for me to decide what I like best is to have a few of "this and that" with me. I have played with a scotty stacker release I bought, and I must say it seems easy to use. I ordered a Chamberlain stacker, and an offshore. I might invest in a Blacks if I can get to Field and Stream this weekend. A lot of advise has been given to me about the transition period that June can bring, but I got to keep my hopes up. I have never made it up to Ontario at an opportune time. First year was in late September....and it was slow. Second year was early April, but a big storm moved through as soon as we arrived. Third year was July and the same happened....big storms moved through all week long and a huge cold front. Figured this year I would tackle June and see what happened. Nice thing is that I am not new to fishing, so if nothing else there must be some harbors or small lakes we can entertain ourselves at. Even if we don't catch much, just being with family will be well worth the investments and efforts. We can always sit around a fire with a few brews and talk/laugh about our failures. If nothing else....I know these guys and something funny and/or unique will happen !!!! Expecially once the sun sets.....
  18. I have a "special" hat I wear on the weekends just for smoking. I used to wear the same hat to work everyday, but I kept wondering what that smell was.....turns out it was me. Even my shoes have smelled like burnt wood !! I have found the same with raw wood......way too many volatiles in the wood that make an awkward taste in the meats. If I get a big amount of white smoke I usually pull the meat off and let it calm down. That thin blue smoke can be hard to get unless the wood has burned down a bit. But, once it burns down, sometimes it quits smoking. This is why I typically char up the new wood, and mix it with lump. I also think guys over do the amount of wood it takes to get good smoke. It only takes a small amount, but requires constant monitoring. I had no idea that some lump company use laminates. Wow, eye opening. Learn something new everyday. If I buy lump anymore, I always opt for "Humphrey's" brand. A local meat smoker tuned me onto it and I have only bought that brand since. It is a brand I have come to trust based off taste and smoke type. I typically salt in a small amount of raw lump wood, usually apple, cherry or pecan. But, nothing seems to make the smoke ring like hickory, mesquite and walnut. Problem with mesquite is that it burns so dang hot....... I learned the hard way about using walnut by itself, way too strong of flavor. For me at least. I used Lilac once for some salmon, but too hard to find around these parts.
  19. Good question on the benefit of DI over deeper water. My only see's 90ish at best on Lake Erie, but I find benefit in it at that depth. Not sure about over 100 FOW though. At 90' I can zoom into the bottom with no issues, but again...I have a much fancier FF over the Helix. But....I am using it to find bottom huggers. If I were simply looking for the suspended guys I don't think I would see the added benefit. I would rather see arcs for suspended rather than clouds. On the bottom I would rather see the low clouds over arcs that you can't see anyways.
  20. I too have a BBQ fascination Skipper......even my family and co-workers make fun of me. I always smell like burnt wood and smoke. I have an uncle who retorts his own lump from some hickory and cherry he has on his property. I can't recall much about it, but I think it is just two simple barrels.....one inside the other (upside down). He has had it for years. I recall him saying the most important factor is having somewhat dry wood to start with. Obviously the heat will push some moisture out, but never hurts to have it fairly dry to begin with. It is a nice process to use the gases produced by the process to continue the burn after the water is pushed out. I also recall it being pretty "smoke-free", other than the water vapor in the onset. I also think he has a fairly long chimney on the top ? It wasn't just a few feet, thinking more like 7 or 8 feet ? I also like the fact that the process is "self-extinguishing", being once the gasses are gone it can not continue to burn. I have thought about it, but since he supplies me with some, why bother. I am not the greatest around 500 degree barrels with 1200 degree exhaust !! As far as drafting, I would think a series of holes around the bottom of main barrel would be sufficient. Probably a 7 or 8" chimney coming out of the top to help control the flow. Wonder if anyone has come up with a dampener to help control the burn ?
  21. Thank you John !!! It amazes me in the last 2 days that so many people have offered to help me out when I arrive up there. I never expected this much support. Especially since I am not local.....or have any clue what I am doing. This is truly a different type of crowd than we get on Lake Erie. Everyone here in NW PA is tight lipped once the walleye start their migration east. Not only have you helped me get a good set-up, I have also had some great advise on what not to do.....and how to stay out of the way of the big charter guys. I don't want to affect anyone's paycheck while I am up there.....other than my own ! I usually buy my NY license at Narby's, so I am sure I can ask them for help on lure selection as well. They will be more than happy to take my money, so I think they would give good honest advise. We will be ataying at "Clean Sweep", cottage #1 I believe. I have stayed there for the last 3 years and always had a good experience. I knew my selected dates were not "ideal", but sometimes it takes some coordinating to get everyone together. I only see these guys once a year, so this is more about family than it is about fish. BUT.....both would be a cake topper. Take care guys -
  22. I don't mind buying the equipment needed for a good trip, but my wife thinks I should sell my motorcycle to support my fun. I think I should sell some of her shoes.......and the cat. Thanks guys !
  23. Holy cow. This website should have a loan application center !! LOL. I ordered a couple moonshines, and a lot of other bright colored slimmer spoons. Of course I got some very large spoons as well.....never know. I need a bigger tackle box now.....Thanks guys !
  24. Nice.....they are reasonably priced. My problem is that the rod holders that are permanently mounted get in the way of my normal bass fishing I do here in NW PA. I hit Erie quite a bit, but usually only run 4 rods with two people aboard. But.....this is family visiting I see once a year, I want to show them a good time. I would love to have another two that remove easy, and are easy on the bank.
  25. Wow, thanks Chas0218. Thank you. I do have three dipsy rods, which I usually use on lake Erie. I wasn't sure if the dipsy's would go deep enough. But then again.....I don't know where the fish will be !! I always have them in the boat.....mostly cause I know how to use them well.
