  1. I think I am going to rig both downriggers up with 200' of cable before I head up there, and probably get one or two 10 pound balls. I don't think I can get away with 12# balls. I understand that ball depth is relative as far as distance from the transducer, but that is getting a bit heavy for me. Too much info for one day !! Now I have to head home and mount my other two rod holders .....and order more equipment.
  2. Tyee, I will have some on-board.......just placed a fishing order for $200.....and still probably missed something. How far back from the spin doctor do you run the fly ?? I assume 15' or so ? Same approach, run off the ball ? Thanks.
  3. Never mind, found an old thread that explained it well. Sorry.....
  4. Dumb question.....do you run cowbells right off the balls ? I wasn't sure if you fix a release up a few feet, or went straight off the balls. Thanks guys.
  5. Thanks everyone.......you guys are helping me take the guess work out of some of this deeper water trolling. If anyone needs lake Erie walleye or perch advise, let me know. I am more than happy to help anyone of you out !! Sounds like I need to make a grocery list...lol. I do have a couple Peanuts already. Probably need top pick up a multitude of different spoons.
  6. Spend the extra $50 for the DI. Just my opinion. There are times I find the DI more effective for subtle bottom hugging fish over conventional sonar. To me the separation is better, and there are some advanced option that help tune it in better. Again...in my opinion. Humminbirds don't have the best separation, but I think they have the best clarity. Also....GPS is great, but can be difficult to see on the smaller screens. I finally switched up to the 858 HD DI last year cause I am getting old.
  7. Thanks DJ.......so you essentially turn your "slider" into a "fixed slider" with just a rubber band. Interesting. I'm going to need more spoons....lol. Any advise on how to get my wife to make more money ???? LOL.
  8. Markmonkey1......thank you. So let me get this straight......a slider is just a 4-'6 leader, one end has another spoon, and the other end has a "snap" of some sorts ? You lower the ball to the desired depth with your initial clean spoon, and once it is set you place the "slider" right on the rigger rod line ? It won't just slide all the way down to the other spoon ? Is the bow in the fishing line created by the blow-back of the ball ? Thanks !!!
  9. Perfect guys, at least this gives me some release names that I can research. I am a simpleton.....simpler is better for me. So I take it you set your first line on the rigger release, lower the ball "X" amount......and then place you stacker.....then release to the depth you want. Easy Peasy.......lol. Does it matter how far your rod holder are spaced for stacking ? I have two holders on my riggers, and another two swivel holders about 4' forward of the riggers (towards the bow). Guppy35....I like the idea of covering 40' of water at once !!!!
  10. Thanks dvdegeorge. I have come to understand that June can be tough, but unfortunately it is the only time we can all get together. I have heard of cowbells and see pictures of them......interesting to say the least. What lures would anyone recommend to use trailing the cowbells ? Being I only have 150' worth of rigger cable, and only 8# balls I would be better off spooling one rigger with 200' of cable ? Probably going to pick up a 10# ball as well, but I think that is about all my riggers can handle. Your advise is certainly appreciated !!
  11. Wow, thank you tuffishooker. The time you spent with your advise is good enough for me without asking too many more details. I don't want be a spoon-fed guy !! I just looked at the OFFSHORE releases, they look intimidating (lol). I am sure once you actually have them in your hand they are quite easy to figure out. I will do some research on the set-up. I can probably get two more rod holders mounted to use 6 rods, but I am so paranoid about a massive tangle. There will be 3 of us in the boat, and from my lake Erie experiences, 4 seems to be doable without much frustration. I am not worried about limiting out or anything like that, just an enjoyable few days on the water and hopefully get a fish or two for dinner. I guess I need to research stacking lines on a rigger. Thanks !
  12. Been reading a lot of info on here about various lures and such. I am taking my first trip to the oak in mid-June with my own boat, and trying to figure out a starting pattern. Some say to run all the same lure, some say to mix it up.....some say to try different depths. I will have a 4 rod spread, to dipsy setups and 2 rigger setups. I might have time to get a 5th rod holder mounted, but don't want to "overwhelm" us by trying too much at one time. Spoons seem like a preferred lure. I understand mixing up colors and such, but what brands am I most likely to find in a local tackle shop ? Should I stick with one size and/or brand ? I didn't know what speeds affect which spoons. Are crank-baits commonly used on Lake Ontario ? What about dodgers and flashers ? Any benefit for the "first time out" novice to use these ? Stacking rigger lines worth it for the hassle ? I take it "flys" are not effective without something to give them some action ? Thus, dodger and/or flasher. I am not specifically looking for any 1 species, but would like a couple fish if I can put in the effort. Laker would be great.....but heck, even smallmouth or pike work for me. Take care guys, tight lines.
  13. Hands down.....a sabiki with 1/2oz - 1oz weight attached to the bottom (depending on wind and/or speed). For here in PA, you must cut off a couple of the hooks to make the rig legal. FISHUSA.com has a very good selection....... This is a drift rig. Drop straight over the boat and SLOWLY let the weight hit bottom. Reel up until you can feel the weight bouncing off the bottom, but not dragging. Set the rod in the holder and wait. From my experience, perch begin to school up come June(ish). If you find a good school, deploy an anchor. A good fish finder helps a lot......you are better off to find the fish that drift around aimlessly for them. Again, just my advise. Not sure about trolling, but we get a ton while walleye fishing with crawler harnesses. Problem is....these are great lake Erie tactics, but maybe not the same for the Big O.
  14. Hello, This is my first post, so I appreciate some patience if I come off as needy or "under-educated". Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of taking a couple charter boats out of the "oak" and have always tried to pay attention to details. Whereas we didn't always have great days on the water, I certainly learned a ton of good information. The problem is that as I get old......I can't remember much. I recall setting the spread looking easy, and finding the fish being a matter of a good fish finder. Now that I am trying to get set up for my trip in June.....it all seems so overwhelming !!!! Here is what I got - 1976 Reinell 190 W/ 115 Mercury tower of power. 2 Big Jon manual downriggers (150' of steel line), mounted on transom. 2 cannon rod holders mounted aft, but in forward of the riggers. Humminbird 858 HD DI Two 8# cannonballs. 5 line counter combos. All Okuma magda reels (20's and 30's). One with 5 color, two with 17# mono, 2 with 30# powerpro. Rods range from 7'7" up to 10'. I also have a variety of dipsy's, jets, small walleye boards and bottom bouncing rigs. A multitude of spoons and cranks. My trip is planned for June 13th - June 18th. Will 150' of downrigger line be enough ? I understand 8# balls probably are not sufficient, but I figure I can buy some 10# balls up there if needed. Now my main questions....... Is running 4 rods sufficient ? I don't have room for #5 or #6 without some major work. Do you run rigger releases right off the balls, or do you recommend some sort of release clipped to the line above the balls ? This release deal has me baffled !! I thought about purchasing some "Scotty Downriggers PowerGrip Plus Release Clip with Self-Locating Snap", but I have no idea how they work. Any help or advise for an early June trip ? Thanks guys !!! Sorry for the long winded post !!!
  15. Hey guy. I went ahead and sent you a PM. I am interested if you will ship.......Thanks !!
  16. "PS..looks like you scored cannon riggers on classifieds!.." Unfortunately I didn't score them.....some one else did ! Oh well....I will keep trying !
  17. Once again, thanks Skipper. Your helpful info is above and beyond what I expected, and I certainly appreciate the time you spent writing what you have. I can understand that a lot will happen with the lake between now and June, but it is always nice to have starting point to think about. If nothing else it gives me a reason to buy more equipment !! My wife is going to hate you guys !!!!
  18. Thanks for the warm welcome Skipper ! I am a bit nervous and excited for my June trip.....the idea is to catch a few fish, and not look like a complete idiot in front of my family. Thank god they are drinkers....or else they would be watching me screw up and actually remember it ! Even if we don't catch fish, I hope I can convince them afterwards that we did . I have always stayed at Clean Sweep so I made reservations there again. The Hoovers are very decent people, and run a nice cottage service. I can't wait to have a few beers after fishing at the Black North. You guys have such a wonderful community at Breeze Point !! I agree.....Mick and Jack always try their hardest to put us on fish. Unfortunately I normally don't pick the best times to fish, and always hit a cold front or wicked winds, but they always have managed to get us some fish in the boat. If you get a chance, tell him Adam From Erie PA said Hi ! I will be at the Oak the weekend of the "tournament" (June 13-14-15-16), think I will have any issue launching and staying out of everyone's way ?? Depending on how the water sets up by early June, I would like to hit the inside for a stray fish to get my rhythm down (maybe get lucky), and maybe head out deeper to find some lake trout of something. I'm new to this on my own, so it will be a lot of trial and error. I am hoping to have a couple riggers by then, but if not I will try my divers......what is the worse that can happen ! Thanks Skipper !!
  19. Wow, what a cool website ! I am from "near" Erie PA (actually Meadville PA). I have been looking for a good site to explore fishing in Lake Ontario because.......well, frankly I am obsessed. I have been fishing for better than 30 years from shore.....probably 15 from a small boat, and about 4 out of a "sea-worthy" boat. "Unfortunately" I have 1 year experience out of a Kayak.....long story, and I'm not proud of it. My wife thought since I loved to fish so much that I should get exercise while doing so. My boat is an old 1974 19 foot Reinell open bow with a 1976 1150 mercury. I put this boat through hell and back on lake Erie. It is equipped with a Hummingbird 858C and 4 pretty standard rod holders. I mostly run dipsy's and jet's. I have fished Lake Ontario 3 times with "Get Hooked Sportfishing" in the last few years.......now I am obsessed with rigging my boat for the deep water fun. I am looking for a couple used manual downriggers if anyone has a couple needing a new home . I will be up in Early June to fish for a week with some family to fish from my boat, and probably back in late August to fish with "Get Hooked". Looking forward to learning....!!!!! Thanks !
  20. Sent you a PM - Very interested. Thanks !
