  1. 11.5 volts is significant voltage drop and/or too low. Your battery should typically run at 12.4 volts or higher

I have never actually checked it, I have my low voltage alarm on my FF set to 11.5 and it's never went off.

  2. I have an old set of mag 10's that I'm replacing this year. I have ran scotties and like them but the digi 5's have really caught my eye. I fish alone most of the time and being able to set the depth hit the button and go do something else is really intriguing. I can't find any info anywhere on what new hummingbirds link to them either? Any of you guys run them and if so are they worth the extra money?

  3. I use a house battery in my boy 16ft Starcraft. I run my helix 9, helix 5, fishhawk x4d, marine radio, CD player and charge phones of a group 27 that's not hooked to the main battery. Never had a problem and never have went below 11.5volts with the group 29 I have now. I am getting new cannon digitrol 5's and was wondering if you guys thought I could hook them to the house battery or if I should run them of the main battery hooked to the main outboard group 27? My kicker is a 5hp 4stroke and doesn't add enough charge to make any difference. Thanks for any help in advance.

  4. I have a 6hp merc on my 16ft Starcraft. Couldn't be happier, it does vibrate a more than a twin but with a rubber mat on the transom it doesn't rattle the boat or anything. I have the sailboat prop and I couldn't be happier starts 2nd pull and will run all day on a gallon of gas.

  5. I'll make the drive for hull and trailer and buy motor local. I fish alone 95% of the time and a tiller allows me to run 3 lines with no problem at all.

  6. Buck,
I am a tiller guy also, what did you or are you planning to get for a replacement?
I have been running a 16.5' Alumacraft tiller for the last 12+ years but i am considering jumping to a 18 to 20 foot tiller. Alumacraft, Crestliner and Lund make some pretty nice large tillers, they are just hard to find local.

I haven't locked one down yet but so far the Hewescraft open fisherman is at the top, it has everything I want just a little narrower than I wanted. I want a wide open back of the boat and it seems like all the main brands of aluminum and glass have the electronics lockers and rod lockers and storage taking up a ton of space where I want all my space. Having my phantom made me realize how nice it is having a big open "dance floor" I think it's even more
Important in a tiller because I'm taking up half of it with my seat.

  7. Hard to beat the smokercraft Phantom series, I bought one new last year and just sold it. I didn't sell it because anything was wrong with it but I am a tiller guy and always will be. I loved everything about my phantom except for the steering wheel.IMG_3067.thumb.JPG.d13e38fe2a2ab04eff5d217ed7420f9d.JPG

  8. .....the question is what do you so when an angry west side of Lake Michigan king spools you on a board on a 4 or 5 color and you cant even crank with pumping the rod. Happened a few times last week during the tournament and there is no bringing that board back without pumping no matter how hard you crank the drag. We had to thumb a few reels even to gain on fish with a board and thats with throttling down and throwing 2 bags out.

Neutral and turning. It can cause a mess but it makes it a lot easier to bring in a board and your copper will drop out of the way usually.

  9. Big copper I prefer big boards, not inlines, more "fish on" time

Do you only run one a side?

When I'm only running 1 a side I run my otter boats but don't want to bring stuff in to set back up. With my new sst pro mags I have no problem getting my 200 out around my 3 and 400.

  10. I don't know what you have for a boat but I have a 16.5ft aluminum and if I have 3 guys we run 9 rods, 2 coppers a side 1 dipsey a side and 2 riggers with a wire thumper down the chute. There are times I'll pull a copper or 2 to add dipseys . Yes tangles happen but it's part of the game. With an inexperienced crew I would drop a few rods but they would likely be riggers and the thumper before I pulled a copper. Day in and day out coppers and dipseys are what catches the most fish for me.

  11. How to you prevent the board flipping near the boat? I have a lot of trouble with that.

Point the rod tip at the board all the way in until it's about a foot from the rod tip.

  12. I will only use scotties for this reason, you call talk to a person and it seems like they personally put it in the mail. 2 weeks ago I broke a clutch plate and lost a couple pads when I was diagnosing on the water called from the lake and the lady told me what I needed and over nighted the parts.
