Food for thought...I was listening to a seminar about 2 years ago, a well known charter captain from Oswego was talking about leader lengths in lead core set ups. He said that there is no reason to have a lead core leader length any longer than the length of the rod that you are using (and quite a few people in the crowd agreed with him). He basically said, the longer the leader, the more it screws with the presentation of your spoon or whatever your using. But especially with the lighter flutter spoons, the long leader and light flutter spoon attached to the heavy sinking lead core will actually float its way upward messing with the presentation and action of the spoon. I took the advice and shortened my leaders to between 8-15 feet and it has helped a ton. Tight Lines.

Thanks very much, this makes a heck of a lot of sense.  I appreciate the info.

  2. I was really all over the place depth wise and catching them at a lot of different depths, but I think the 80 - 140 fow zone may have been best.  Generally my spoons were 45-65 down.  I did catch a few in much deeper water (including the biggest one), and a couple in shallower too.  The water temps are jumping around a lot right now, so I guess they are exploring different areas.  I saw temps anywhere from 40 - 51 degrees, and everything in between.  Good luck!

  3. Cayuga lake trout were partying and hungry on cinco de Mayo and the weather couldn't have been more perfect. Had an epic day, 19 lakers landed & 1 salmon. It's like going to the gym and getting a heck of a workout, strong fish. Largest fish of the day, a 29.75" 9.9 pound moose. All released except one to eat.  Fish came mostly from the east shore, anywhere from a couple of miles south of Myers all the way up to the power plant.  They were active and hungry.  Good luck to all out there today!

  4. I fished the same day, just north of Taughannock, trolled up almost to Sheldrake.  Only landed 1 one laker around 3 pounds.  Had 3 other runoffs, but they got off.  Sharpening my hooks this week!  I tried in shallow, 20-50 fow the first 3 hours, then went deeper 70-250 fow.  Couldn't decide which was better.  The fish seem fairly scattered lately.  But they're out there!

  5. Actually, they just updated the signs down there to February 28 - March 9.  I backed down the ramp around 2:45 this afternoon and was about to launch when I realized they blocked off the entrance to get under the bridge.  I was bummed, but glad things are getting fixed up.  Luckily, I got out yesterday for a couple hrs and picked one nice 29" laker.

  6. I got out on Tuesday for just a couple hrs out of T falls.  Got one 5 pound laker and had one other fish on, rainbow or salmon, that screamed out some line, took a couple of leaps and got off.  There are definitely fish out there.  I mostly trolled spoons 15-30ft down in 30-80 fow.  I might get out tomorrow if I can.  Good luck.
