I was hopin' that he wouldn't notice the weather forcast, and besides, I don't wear a hat so a chin strap won't be necessary. I would have on my inflat-a-belt, EPRIB and a also a tether line tied around my waste if he has the B :shock: lls to go out. My bucket and floor rag are standing by just in case we have a melt down on this trip. Doesn't look good by the way Shellback is helping me out :? .

`stix...`frisco's boat will go under the bridge OK. Have to lower the antenna and the bar at the inlet was passable last winter when we(HE) went out of there. Have to keep your lower unit up a ways but your boat will float. My boat fits under the bridge in the summer when the water level is up. About 6" above the running light on the hardtop. Probably the safest thing to do is just stand on the bridge and measure down to the water. BTW,I use my Italian ruler to measure stuff,.... starts at 7" so remember that when I tell you how long something is .

Was thinking of a way to talk `frisco into taking his boat out this weekend. Could use some help from you guys reading this to edge him on a little. I know it's gunna be cold but what the heck. Otherwise I may have to stay home and wash the kitchen floor or other domestic chores.

.....now Chaos see what is happening since we last talked about this. A barrel of oil is down close to $50.00 today. That's almost a $20.00 drop or 28% a barrel. Gasoline finally dropped $.06 (-2.4%) at the pump Saturday. See how it all works :? . Give it a little more time and your home electric/gas/fuel oil rates should start going up. :shock: Just keep saying .....variable rate, variable rate.....

I gotta take my mind off this stuff and get back to the important things in life like fishing....

My nephew bought a boat there, said ya can't beat them on price but their service sucks `cause of the long lead time to get any work done(big volume I guess). musk....I don't know the price on it. Didn't ask a salesmen because I didn't want to get hung up on something that I couldn't buy. The more I looked at it the better it was getting. The boat on display was the 2550 (25'6")Pilot XL w/200Yamaha 4 stroke w/ Aluminun trailer & had a few other goodies.

It was in front of the dealers showroom, not at the boat show. I'm kinda partial to hard tops so that is why it caught my eye(s) as I was driving by. Dropped off the hens for some shopping at the mall and doubled back to check out the boat. I get into more trouble doing stuff like that but I can't help it.

Was in Richmond, VA over the weekend visiting the in-laws and took in a boat show at the convention center. Because I already spent all my fun money I thought I'd go boat shopping for Fishstix :shock: (don't you love it when someone else is spending your money? :x )

I also used Plasti-Dip to coat fish downrigger weights. Got it at Home Depot and Lowes also carries it. They didn't have the spray, but had the brush on. I put 3 coats on.

Used the red color :shock: , probably turns brown and then black as it goes deeper in the water column. Also added a little prism tap on the sides for flash. Trout/salmon don't seem to mind the color and I run plugs 6' behind it on Oneida for walleyes so I'm not sure just how much the color really influences the strike.

I know that Stinger always brings a digital camera when fishing. Does anyone else think it's a bit unusual that we have not seen any photo's supporting the claims that have been made in the previous emails regading these "supposed" series of fishing trips?

It was pretty tough fishing Sunday, had to wear a jacket until 09:30.

We won't go fishing without you this weekend. `frisco is working and I'll be in Richmond.

:shock: .....probably should have started a new Post for 1/7/07 but Sunday was just a overrun for Saturday because we pulled out early after the storm front went through.

Before we get to the fish report there are a couple things that need to be said about `frisco's report. Everything he said was true,...no "fish story" or stretching the truth. Just the facts. Ken was a gracious host/Captain. Always checking that I was comfortable or needed coffee, cookies, sandwich, is to hot/to cold, do you want me to put the worm on for you, etc....you get the picture :roll:

`frisco just didn't give all the facts..... :? . He forgot to mention that my cell phone time was part of the deal if he took me fishing. The handicap was that I had to give him 30% more fishing time than me to make the contest fair so I figured the best way to do that was talk on the phone, but I cheated. All the calls were fishermen so even though I was preoccupied on the phone I was getting HOT tips from the peanut gallery. You don't think it was just a coincedence that the fish were hitting because of some radio wave/+ion thing on the wire cables do you? I just wanted to clarify that point. .

Oh ya, Sunday, no big deal, we caught some fish. Tried for a Grand Slam but fell short on the Rainbow. Caught fish from the surface all the way down to 135' on the riggers and 360' on the wire dipsey. Had one double on a spoon rod. It was at 95' and had a dink salmon at the ball and one on the cheater.

Ran into Fishstix out there both days and that always adds to the fun. As soon as this Forum starts getting more topics I'll stop babbling on........ so I hope we start seeing more topics. It's going to be a short winter and we all need to tool-up for April .

Last year I added 2 of these to the back of my boat for downriggers and few other things. I use 12 guage wire to feed the fuse blocks and off I went. Easy install and should be an easy replacement method at the helm with a new 10 or 12 guage wire feeding them from the battery.

Weenie.........I bought the "inflate-a-belt" last year after reading the post on this board about a lone fishermen that went overboard on Ontario and never was found. His boat was found beached the next morning with the riggers still out.

I wear this every time I'm alone and always during the colder months even if some else is aboard. It's not the best out there but it is something that I will wear during the ummer even on the hottest days because it doesn't touch your skin. Just hangs around your waist. It's a semi-manual inflation by pulling a tab. A CO2 cartridge does the inflating.

If you go over at this time of year and are alone you will probably die from hyperthermia but at least your family will have a body to bury if you are wearing a life jacket/belt/vest.

Got this picture of you off the camera at Cornell. Taken at 9:50AM Sunday. Probably you were still running boards from the location that you were at. Check out the stained water coming out of the inlet.

Hope that `07 will let us keep fishing. Should be back out there next weekend if the weather holds.

stix.....although we weren't targeting lakers specifically, we did set stuff out that normaly would take them. We tried to locate some bow's, browns & salmon in the keeper class so our sets were 50' & up over 100' to 75' bottom for most of the day and at times ran closer to shore in the 30' to 15' bottom. Ran a copper/orange spoon for at least 4+ hours off the ball & at times on the cheater at varying depths.

Never fish up on the north end in the winter before and after rather disappointing results from last weekend we said what the heck, lets give it a try.

Hope we get to read another hot report tonight titled "12/31/06 for stix, the Fat Lady has sung on Cayuga", or "Last dance for stix in `06"

When I run them I use a fixed cheater. Use a rubber band to hold the cheater on the main line/wire so it won't move. I used a 6' leader on the cheater and had it about 7' above the dipsey. If you want to trip the dip and bring it up the spoon on the cheater would stay in position above the dipsey and really didn't tangle on the main line. When a fish hits the cheater it would slide down to the dipsey and trip it. Only used it with spoons on both dip & cheat. Was afraid that a dodger on the dip would cut the leader with a fish on the cheater. When you hook up be prepared to untangle a mess :shock: .

It's a handful to rig and run so proceed with caution. Had a double once, 2 dink salmon, used scissors to clear those lines .

We had a 6 1/2 hour boat ride.. :shock: ....one dink salmon .

Area trolled was from Rocky Point on the east side up past Lavenna with a couple loop-t-loops and then Deans Cove south to about 1-2 miles past Sheldrake(more loop-t-loops). Ran most everything,...lets see there was the:

...boards w/plugs, mini diver

...wire using 2 different size dips with dodger/fly, dodger spoon, dodger/streamer,spoons of various sizes.

... and then there was riggers w/spoons, small dodger/fly, small dodger/streamer, sliders, plugs, mini diver w/ stuff.

All those sets got us really hungry....had coffee, carrot roll, kaltahki (sp),sandwiches, pretzels and I think I saw a bottle of juicy juice. Good thing we brought the big cooler along `cause it made a nice seat in the cabin next to the heater :roll: .

Well that trip scratched my itch for a trip to the north end for awhile. Stix did the right thing and stayed south.

I've run cheaters on the dipsey using the super lines but haven't tried it on the wire. It's a little clumsy but it will work. Just keep the cheat up the line a little farther than the length of the cheater so when retrieving the dipsy the cheater won't tangle with the dip. Haven't used it much because of the extra pain it is to get rigged and deployed without getting into the other stuff.

I started this thread so huntfrisco & stix would feel the pressure to keep it going.......preferably with an actual report for that date.

Weather is a little iffy for Sat but we want to close the year with a better report than the last one.

If Huntfrisco will brave the elements and take his boat out then I'll tag along to make sure he doesn't make up any fish stories. :roll:

We definitely could use a little help from those that have winter trolling experience on Cayuga. Some tactics and areas from more recent years successes would be great. We can also use the positive mental attitude of the Board members by thinking that the winds will be low and that the temps will be above 30 deg. :shock: This could vary well be our last attempt for 2006 , so we really need you guys at this critical time.......think calm winds & cool temps . Thanks, I knew we could count on you to help us out .

I wasn't going to respond because I didn't have much to say that wasn't already said.

Ken was diffinitely a good host. Had the heater on in the boat before he even launched. We had calm seas for the most part and the coffee & cookies were available all day. We never had to put the rain coats or extra jackets on and by 11AM the sun came out and one would think it was April.

We covered a lot of water that day and didn't mark many fish and fewer bait balls. Ran plugs from start to finish off the boards. Also covered all depths from 5' to 65' with riggers, sliders and wire dips at various times. Only caught dink salmon on all sets except the dipsey. Spoons & plugs worked but the plugs took the most. Best action was when we picked up 2 salmon on spoons on one rod, ball at 60' and a free slider. The glory fish are a little illusive right now. I know they are there somewhere. Maybe next time.

Stix, you may have seen this before but thought I'd throw it back up for you. As you can see I placed my downriggers as far aft as posible. Doing this I was able to gain a little extra room along the side. My outboard riggers are just aft of the rear cleat and the inboard riggers next to the motor well accomplishes a couple things. Most importantly is it clears the sides for rodholders and/or people to work rods or fish. It also keeps the rigger cables closer to the rear of the boat so when turning, the outboard cables won't swing as quickly to the inboard cables. May let you turn a little sharper than riggers set farther up the gunnels.

Another nice advantage is being able to use short arms on the inboard riggers. Arms are still long enough to swing into the prop wash if desired and short enough to rig the balls with out cable pulleys. There is about 5'6" from pulley to pulley between the inboard riggers as positioned in the picture. I also added another notch to the inboard swivel bases so they will set straight back if desired. I have four positions on each inboard rigger to cover any area behind the boat. Positions are: straight back, behind engine, corner of transom and position in picture. Works great when landing fish from the back. Opens a nice size hole to bring fish in without pulling rods.

....the way I hear it Stix was supposed to stay home and make Christmas cookies Saturday morning and told his wife that he had to run to the store and buy some flour & sugar......never got back home till dark :shock: .

Stix, Saturday would be a good day to fish and you can stay home with the misses on Sunday. Temps in the 50's. So what's the big deal if it rains a little.

Cleaned the guns and put them in the safe. Now I have to find someone with a boat that is ready to fish (mine is stored for the winter).

We bought ones for our wire rods last year but the original tips are still good, we won't put the twilli tips on until the wire eats up the original tips.

....just a thought. If you wait until the wire eats up the rod tip, at what point does the worn tip starts to nick, chafe, scratch, fry the wire? I've heard others say the same thing and often wondered when things start to melt down :shock: .

I figured that if a special tip was designed to aid in the life expectancy of the wire then the sooner put on the better. Did I pull off perfectly good rod tips for nothing?

Maybe someone can set us straight on the effects of standard tips vs twilli tips vs roller tips when using wire line and what way is the best to go.
