  1. The big lake set ups work great on the fingers, run a mix of spoons and flashers and flies and see what they want. I think there are land locks in keuka
  2. Sounds like you have it figured out for your boat and presentation, sliders are very easy to run though, just tie up a 6-8' leader of 15-30lb test with swivels on both ends. Connect your favorite spoon to one end and connect the other end to your mainline, and toss the spoon out, as you troll the spoon slides down the line and will settle in the bow of the mainline. Pretty simple so now you can catch fish at the ball and at the midpoint or so in the line. Set the first lure in the release and lower it down 10-20' and then attach the slider so the lines don't get tangled. If a fish hits the slider you may see the rod bouncing but may not pop the release, just reel, reel , reel, until there is tension and set the hook or pop the release. Give it a try next time.
  3. Do you have riggers, dipsies? Always hear brightly colored spoons work well in the Messenger Post Fishing Line in sports section. I hear jigging at or near the bluffs works, but I think you need a trolling motor to hover over them with jig. The bluffs would be the crotch of the Y I guess for lack of a better term.
  4. Nicely rigged canoe dude, how fast are you trolling? Bright colored spoons are often mentioned for Keuka Lake, I haven't had a spoon bite in Canandaigua probably all year. Just flashers and flies or squids. do you run a cheater and or a slider?
  5. I had the pleasure of a week vacation on Canandaigua Lake with my family 36 people including myself, some that traveled from New Mexico, Boston, Portland Oregon, Chicago, Detroit, NYC and New Hampshire. The morning bite was excellent most days with limit catches, beautiful sunrises, and back in port for breakfast by 9:00. On Tuesday morning lines were set at 5:30 and we were done by 7:30 3 man limit. Best producers were yellow crush glow spin doctor and hammer fly, 11" white crush glow hot spot and glow squid 11" Italian Hot Spot with glow squid taking lakers and nice bow biggest fish of the week was 9 lbs Even smallmouths were hitting the spin doctor black dot with hammer fly The Black dot Spin Doctor accounted for 3 fish per morning until knot failure on leader for wire dipsy dropped probably the biggest fish of the week and lost the most productive rig, so I had my niece Katie "doctor" up a 5" White Revelator with black dots and it continued to hammer them. Best picture was 120 - 235 FOW, wires out 210', 235', 295', and riggers parked at 60' and 75'. A major thunderstorm blew through with 60 mph winds, hail, and 4 foot waves, the only skunk trip was Thursday afternoon which preceded the major storm by 2 hours. This pic shows the wind picking up and the beautiful sunrise was the next morning.
  6. I have 1000' of 30 lb wire a Tekota 600 LC which fits with some room, ( no backing though) is the 40 lb diam. that much more than 30 lb diam.? I'm not sure but it can't be too much bigger. Hi Rick!
  7. Hi Gotta bite, this is a rig I use on Canandaigua Lake very productive for me, I don't see why it would not catch salmon too HI Rick!
  8. Saturday 8/4/07 Sunny, light South wind, Fished out of the southend with my brother in law Michael who came to visit. We started out around 6:10 am on the west side in 135' FOW, working 2 riggers, and 2 wires with flashers and squids, spin doctors with flies, boated a nice 7 lb. laker with the 8" green e chip with a glow squid by 6:20 am, seemed to be lots of weeds floating and we were cleaning a bit too much. So we picked up and ran further north to Vine Valley and managed slip outside of the weed line. Set up and proceeded north moving in and out picking up a 4 lb., 10 lb., 6 lb., and a 3 lb. (released who went belly up) all lakers, and released 3 fish all over 7 lbs. We managed 2 fish an hour for our outing and Michael had a good time and he even drove the boat. Best set ups were 11" "Italian " Hot Spot (Michael came up with that name), Yellow Crush Glow Spin Doctor and Hammer Fly on the wire, 11" white Hot Spot with glow squid, White with black spots Spin Doctor and Mirage Fly on the rigger with Shark weight, 210' on dipsies on 3 settings, and riggers 65', 70', & 75'. "Italian" Hot Spot (you can't see red stripe on other side of flasher) Michael with 10 lb off the wire Good set up Sunday 8/5/07 sunny breezy south wind early, cool morning Basically same program we went 5 for 8, more rigger bite today though, only one wire fish which was a shaker all others were 5-6lbs nice day. We kept 4 on Sunday and 5 on Saturday Michael and I had nice fish fry for lunch and he took home some nice filets
  9. I took the drive from Canandaigua up to Narby's yesterday for a few supplies, Spin Doctors, Yecks, shark weight, and A TOM MIK bulk flies to tie up myself (thanks to Yankee Troller for showing me how to tie tournament tie). Sharon is the nicest business owner in the tackle business I have met, (I haven't been to Abe's in Sodus yet), she knows her stuff, has the best selection of hard to find items unlike the big sport shops that don't know where any thing is and have bad customer service, B E Tackle in Ontario has a great selection too, though. Narby's is open daily 6:00 am - 9:00 pm, sundays I think she sleeps in a little bit and closes a little earlier too, nice store nice lady, nice hours of operation, no wonder she wants to sell the operation and retire, I don't blame her with a schedule like that.
  10. I will run the flasher fly program off both riggers and wire, wire has not produced much lately, though for some reason. When I do have a couple people on board I run the 2 riggers, 2 wires, and 2 inline boards usually with snap weights and sticks. Solo usually 2 riggers, I will run a 1 wire, 1 rigger early and see if they like the wire that day. Hey Chris what's up next time your out kick up the speed and see what happens, I would recommend it for the bows. Preferred temp over that deeper water was the best place to be, I cruised my usual spots like dragon wall and west side by marina but it was too shallow not enough room in water column for temp to set up. With all the trout excitement I forgot I did land a release a nice small mouth off a rigger set at 50' down over 75 FOW with the 11" white Hot Spot and a glow squid, first fish of the day near the dragon wall.
  11. I know what you mean, salmon fishing Lake O is much more exciting, however I live 5 minutes from North End boat launch. Easy on the truck gas and my boat is only a 14' Smokercraft. I am fully rigged though you know it, and I have had the pleasure of salmon fishing many times with Yankee Troller and Jax, Fishinman a couple times. I agree I have had some slow trips this year but I haven't been out as much also. The flasher and fly or squid is my best producer by far. 8 " Echips in green or white and 11 " Hot Spots in green or white, lately AtoMik hammer Fly has been good as has Howie No SeeUm. The speed control has been my mission for 4 years now. The last two seasons I have run the Sub troll and it has improved my catch for sure. Also I am targeting bow and browns at 3 mph at the ball instead of 1.5 to 2.5 for lakers. I did catch the two lakers Monday going 3 mph though. 70' down over 135' down temp was 49- 51 degrees. As far as time of year I have caught my largest fish in August, last year 10 lb laker and 2 years ago 11 lb laker. This year I have some more newbies coming to visit in August and they always bring the good luck and good karma, I am hoping to hit the trifecta with a laker , brown, and rainbow all over 12 lbs.
  12. Okay 7.15 report, north end nada zip zilch skunk, Ah now 7.16 report, put out the trusty 8" echips with flies, couldn't get any takers and could not locate many fish, switched to 11" white flashers with glow squids, off the riggers and sped up to 3mph in search mode cruising north end east to west just south of german bros. had a release down 70' nice scrappy 'bow put up a good fight and show, cpr'ed him and set him off and as I sped up again to 3 mph he decided to belly up. Well I circled around to scoop him up since I thought he gave up but as I scooped net under him he righted himself scooted right out of the net and skampered across the surface and went down, like I scared the life back into him, very cool to watch, kept up the same program landing 2 lakers at 70' down in same area same speed, released them all to play another day.
  13. I would like to weigh in my .02, I have marked fish at a depth of 113', let out standard size dipsy on a 3 setting with 11" flasher and fly, to 339' feet and landed lakers to 11 lbs in Canandaigua Lake. I know, I know lakers big deal right, but this lake is near my house and I have a little boat. Speed probably was around 2.5- 2.75 mph and that would be a 3:1 ratio. Also I have let out 150' of wire out over 50 FOW and the dipsy ticks the bottom. I run a Daiwa Sealine 47 LC with 30 lb Malin silver and a Tekota 600 LC with 30 Lb Opti Tackle camo
  14. I am thankfull fer ray k cuz he kan crak me up in the mornin when I kneed it and almost makes me cry in one post, my condolences ray.
  15. Okay I don't want to confuse a guy but if it's the acronyms I will PM you, my brother told me about a landscaper in metro detroit area who has a contraption that cuts lake grass, puts it onto the deck of the barge or boat. Then he dumps it in his "yard" let's nature take it course and creates compost/ fertilizer and sells it. He gets paid to cut the grass and remove it and gets money by selling the compost which he creates for free. Good gig I'd say. I used to mow lawns for money and we would dump our grass clippings in my partners field and that pile stunk to high heaven. Good luck with your frustration, I would come and join you and bring the beer and hot dogs too but I have to go to a family reunion with the little Mrs. I will have a cold one in your honor and grill up some hots for the cousins and my PITA brother in law.
  16. Do you mean people just dump there grass clippings in the lake? OMG! WTF!
  17. North end report: hit the usual spots with spotty fish marked, took two lakers one off lazer spook mup rig, other on silver streak mag alewife mupped. Very warm water from surface to 45' down over 50'. 65 on top and 61 down 45' along western shore. Ran four rod program wire dipsies with echips and flies and spoons off the riggers..
  18. I have one, and it worked for awhile but now it just seems to eat batteries, or has some internal issue. It was cool to let it out hooked to dipsy and let it out slow until desired amount of line out. Let it sit for a bit and then reel it in and see what depth it achieved and what the temp was. The instructions said you could clip to your line and let it sink no weight but it would take forever. It was easier to clip line to rigger and lower to say 75' and check temp. If you really want to know down temp and speed get a probe, much easier, real time display but costs more. Well worth the money though.
  19. I spoke with a friend on Lake St Clair last weekend while fishing for musky, and he said until the ocean going vessels dump their cargo in some port on the St Lawrence and a Great Lakes freighter or shipper takes the shipment further upbound we will continue to see these issues in Great Lakes and other tribs and lakes like the Fingers. So maybe send a letter to your reps in the state legislature and senate and federal house and senate too. I know some guys who catch and release their sportfish but there are a lot of people who want to fish and eat their harvest. What if some issue comes up in the deer population? Show me a deer hunter who is just doing it for sport, every deer hunter is eating their harvest. Just think of the dollars spent during the fishing season and deer season. People are already dropping out of the sports so if they can't eat their kill watch the numbers fall even more. I love to eat meat but I am not going to eat some bluegill with black spot disease or a trout or walleye with vhs.
  20. 1987 short shaft, 25 HP Mercury blown top end, good lower unit, cowl, tiller, etc. good for parts or if you know how to do it, rebuild it, and hit the water. $100.00 or trade for Penn 330 GTI with rod for leadcore setup
  21. I decided to head out the north end at 5:15 am slid in near east side dragon wall area. Just got set up and a laker hit a mag nk black raspberry down 60' 35' back. Basically did a merry go round from east side to west had fish hit riggers and wire. Green e chip and hammer fly was hot set up as well as white e chip with no seeum fly. Best program was one rigger 40' down with white chip back 30' and other rigger down 50' with green chip back 15'. 5 for 6 by 9:30 with a couple of browns and the rest lakers.
  22. One of my Seneca Lake buddies said it has been slow. Derby weekend only produced around 700 or so weighed in fish. Prior years the number was over 2000. I would second the spinnys and flies or 11" flashers in green with orange w/ white or green fly and white / glow flasher with packer or green fly. Watch your speed 1.5-2.2 and turn if that doesn't turn them on speed up 2.5 2.8 or more, seneca can have wicked current which will have major effects on downspeed.
  23. if you have a fishfinder try jigs with zoom flukes, white on white or green and silver when you see fish at or near bottom, if the water is cold still and you don't have a ff try near shore casting swimming jig back to boat, or toss out a swedish pimple laker taker blue and silver and paddle/ troll that rig behind as you take in the scenery. A rod holder might help too for the paddle troll and don't forget to get the permit at the top of lake.
