Oneida Lake Oneida South Shore Boat ramp
chugbug replied to chugbug's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
anyone using this ramp ,easy in and out , read somewhere it has 100 spots for trailers , seems like alot -
I know braid and flouro are the most popular right now but if you want a good mono try the spiderwire ultracast ultimate mono in clear , there 10 lb test is .011 dia . and no leaders to mess with and a 330 yd spool is 8.95 Spiderwire® Ultracast™ Ultimate Mono Fishing Line is the ultimate strength-to-diameter, co-polymer mono, with low stretch for ultimate sensitivity. Ideal for baitcast reels, Ultracast Ultimate Mono has a "web-thin" diameter for higher line capacity. Ultimate strength-to-diameter co-polymer monofilament Low stretch Highly sensitive Ideal for baitcast reels

Anybody using this ramp thinking about using it this weekend , is there alot of parking , how crazy busy does it get big line waiting to put in !! and what motels are close by , thanks
-
The jack and coke probably helped alot but I think the biggest thing you can do is to eat it fresh from the lake or a day or so in the fridge , the longer it sits in the freezer the stronger they get and cut out the dark line too .

glad it was good for you the reviews were pretty bad , yeah I'm finding most places want a 3 day min. stay , I think a motel for short trips will be better , I can watch the weather late in the week and decide at the last minute if its worth the run up , was thinking a dock setup would be nice but maybe I can find a marina to tie up at eventually .

Just wish the stradic wasn't so expensive !!!! Then I would have a bunch of them too .

Anglers bay has some really mixed reviews has it gotten better recently ,
-
My favorite reel is a shimano stradic 2500 spinning reel and thats what I use for all my laker jigging , I use baitcasters for most bass fishing just never liked them for jigging , problem is I only have one spool for the stradic so changing line back and forth isn't going to work , guess I will stay with my spiderwire ultracast for now and see how it works on the walleye .

Would never have thought the kanzen could have the same diameter as fireline and twice the pound test !! Anyone using the fireline crystal any better than regular fireline

I';m having a hard time breaking away from mono specifically spyder wire ultra cast use to be called triple x mono and they changed the name , its a good all around line with low stretch and the fish don't see so no need for adding leaders . Got started using when I started jigging for lakers we wanted a low stretch line but not the no stretch like you get with braid I like a little give . I know I'm behind the times but its inexpensive and just plain works ! Looking at getting into some walleye fishing with leadcore and riggers .but what can you tell me about a braid for main line to a fluorocarbon leader for jigging and blade baits it won't be huge walleye on Oneida so thinking about a 10 lb Fireline or nanofil to 10 pound fluorocarbon is it worth it .I'm not convinced it will be any better than a roll of ultracast mono in 10 lb test .I realize naofil isn't a braid are there any benefits to it over fireline

Got to thinking there may be someone on the forum that would rent out there cabin or cottage on Oneida for a few days at a time , just the wife and I , you won't even know we were there .

Charleys is a pretty good run to the eastern part of the lake but that would have been perfect with the boat slips and ramp and very reasonable , I will keep it in mind .I'm noticing alot of places are already full for June .

Also its only my wife and I so just looking for a small clean cottage preferably with a boat slip but not a must and something we can rent for two days at a time , thanks

We had a good trip two weeks ago out of Newburgh landed at least 40 fish mostly small ones but caught two 31'' and three 22'' first trip with my own boat , drifting with bloodworms . Found out how expensive bait was and if you can even get any . How are you guys making out with downriggers and leadcore ,
-
Looks like we are doing a trip to the cape also for stripers , taking are own boat for more possibilities rather than surf fishing , so end of June into july are we going to have a hard time finding rooms at a decent price with the summer tourist season in full swing or are there places to stay that are reasonable . Also what area should we concentrate are fishing on so we know where to look for motels . Appreciate any help at all !!!

Not saying trolling won't work there just wasn't much of it going on , pretty much all drifting it would be nice if trolling worked .We used about a 6 to 8 ft fluorcarbon leader of 15 lb test to mainline with a # 5 or 7 barrel swivel , egg sinker 1 to 2oz. depending on the wind and tide you want it to hang fairly straight or it wont stay at the right depth , if memory serves me hooks were 4/0 circle. They were easy to see on the depth finder and we caught alot of the fish we marked and that also will give you the depth there at 17 ft was good for us that day . Good luck

I fished out of Newburgh - Beacon last year for the first time on the Hudson we did really good , from what I saw its pretty much drift fishing with blood worms or eels and bait is expensive and there is only one place I know of selling it and you have to pre order your bait , I brought home 3 just around 28'' there is a slot limit . You do need a Marine Registry license you can it anytime and its free just do a google search on it and call them for the license , you might be able to get it online as I needed it that day so had to call them . I did see one boat trolling but not sure if they caught any fish .

Sounds like there are alot of good fishing opportunities on the Cape wish I was closer to good fishing seems like I have to run three hours to get anywhere good .
-
OK I will have to find out when they go , I thought i heard spring was there time to go up ..
-
Thanks for the info guys , sounds like it could be tuff the first time up especially fly fishing, I do know of a group that went up last year that did real good but they know the area well and have been doing it awhile sounds like I better get a hold of them and see if I can tag along !! I was thinking of taking the wife and doing some site seeing and fishing on my own but for the first trip I would probably be better off with someone thats been there before .
