  1. Boy even if we can get out this weekend the river will be mud with debris everywhere. Not sure what we're doing wrong Ray, we were there for outgoing tide fishing that 30fow range with bloods down 10-20'.... had a couple of misses (the wife sleeping) and landed one. Saturday last week was extremely busy and people at the ramp next to Gullys are not always all that nice. The wife managed to put a small hole in the "new" boat this weekend, let go of it while waiting for me to back up the trailer... one of those rogue waves from the trains going by hit the boat into the corner of the L-dock... watch that corner the padding is gone and it's just sharp metal! Not sure where you get your bloods from, Fisherman's World in Wappingers has them for 9.50/doz, but Vinny's Bait on Rt.9 next to wappingers lake has them for $6.99/doz. Vinny only has bloods though, no herring. Herring were $2.50 each at Fisherman's. Nick
  2. So technology finally caught up with me (or is it the other way around ) and I bought a DROID X phone with data package. Now I need some cool fishing/boating apps to go with it. I'll get BoatUS' app in case I need to be towed, and I think the Weather Channel has RADAR maps, but does it show lightning? Anyone have any other good apps? I think Navionics makes one too, but I doubt it's free Nick
  3. Hey Ray saw you out there... tried to raise you on the radio without luck. We've been out the past few weekends and will be out next weekend. We haven't had nearly the luck you had... two fish in four trips. We mostly drift bloodworms, were you trolling? Nick
  4. haha that's what my coworker said, but then it might as well be a 2nd job! The paperwork alone would be atrocious. Nick
  5. So the wife and I have been discussing what we thought might be a fun summer project... I'm just hoping that it's legal We always thought it would be a lot of fun to "track a salmon". Over the past couple of years I looked into different ways to do this, from a small cell phone, to a modded GPS, to a DIY comm device. In the end, just about every option was going to cost quite a bit of $ and time and it honestly kinda took the fun out of it. Lately though, I've been seeing more and more GPS tracking devices made for tracking your children, cars, boats, etc. They are actually pretty inexpensive now $75-$100, but don't last all that long... maybe a week with luck. They are pretty small and could easily be attached to a salmon without too much interference (or so the lampreys tell me). I guess my main concern is... would this be legal? If my salmon crosses into Canada, is it considered espionage I just thought it would be a fun summer project, although I'm not sure the signal will be able to penetrate more than 20ft (if that). I'd need to test it off my downrigger for a bit. Little buddy, zoombak, garmin GTU a bunch of options http://www.zoombak.com/ It might just be a waste of $100, but with gas prices this year I may have a lot of free time Nick
  6. It happens when the fish sleep upside down... Are you sure it was a lamprey mark and not a scar from fighting or comorant or something? Either way, nice to hear some fish are biting out of Sodus, we'll be up for the season the first week of June. Nick
  7. Does anyone have a phone number for Kevin or Wilson Marina? The number on the wilson marine webpage isn't working Nick
  8. Not suing my father Whatever he gets from the insurance company goes to building a better shed. I told him I'd split the additional costs if he got one big enough to fit the boat in, but I don't think he's willing to do that lol. Nick
  9. Just a heads up that fish waste needs to be dumped off shore... if I'm seeing right looks like it was tossed on the beach, or maybe that clip wasn't related to the fish cleaning before it, but wanted to make sure you knew. Nick
  10. Just a quick update... got lucky, the shed collapsed in and not towards the boat. The fishing rods actually poked a hole in the roof and are sticking out now (they sure build ugly sticks tough!). I'm guessing the rods will need to be replaced. For now, we just tossed a tarp over the shed until the snow melts enough to move the boat. Once the boat is moved we'll tear the shed apart and insurance said they'll replace anything damaged inside the shed. Nick
  11. Thanks for the kind words Vince. Stinger, that's not a bad idea. When I get up there tomorrow I'll have to take a look. If nothing else, it might at least prevent the sharp metal edges from hitting the boat if something goes wrong. Nick
  12. The bike is for my handicapped sister. My father went out and looked under the tarp and says he doesn't think the boat was hit. I'm headed up tonight to check. The rods are definitely going to be in bad shape, but I'm hoping the reels are ok. My father told the insurance agent the reels were $150 each and rods were $100 each So hopefully, it's not too late to correct that. We're not sure if we're going to file the claim yet or not... I need to look at it when I get up there tomorrow. I'm more worried about trying to safely take the shed down without hitting the boat... there's too much snow to move the boat. My father wants to throw a tarp over it and leave it until spring.... Nick
  13. I'm sure he has homeowners, doubt he has "shed insurance"... is there such a thing? Nick
  14. Hope everyone is bearing the winter time well! My father called me today to let me know that the roof of his shed had collapsed... the shed my boat is sitting next to and all my fishing equipment is in. I can't tell from any of the pictures if there was any boat damage, but I can clearly see a large tear in the tarp over the boat. So my question is... if there is a large score mark in the boat and/or a lot of my fishing equipment is damaged... how does this work with insurance? Will they cover it since the boat is in my name and property in his? Anyone gone through this process? I haven't been able to get a hold of my father to have him check under the tarp... but I know my luck.... Nick
  15. Very slow morning out of Sodus. We got out late, about 7am. We put a dark green spin doctor with a green fly out 200' on #2 setting over 65fow... was out about 15 mins and started ripping. Landed a dark 20lb male. Thought we were going to have a great day... did only two more fish through 2pm... 3lb laker and 5lb king both on a green pro troll green fly 250' on #2 setting dipsey around 120fow. The water IS COLD. We had 50 degrees down 50 in 65fow. In 200fow we had 42 degrees down 50. Nick
  16. Those of you who run the copper down the chute... when you get a fish on a dipsey, how do you keep them from tangling with the copper? Just play it to the side or do you reel the copper in? Nick
  17. Bill, Any chance you can draw a diagram of how the rope should look? I followed the instructions, but I'm not sure how to know if mine is correct or not? It seems to pull ok, but with a 500 copper it tends to fall behind the boat a bit. Also, when the water is reallllllly flat it tends not to pull well and comes in close to the boat. Nick *** Whooops Yankee just posted while I was... that clears it up a bit!*****
  18. I think they were her's, but there was something fishy about them....
  19. I haven't had a chance to look up the rules on loc.org... I just notices some lakers weighed in less than 15 lbs is all... Nick
  20. Both riggers are having the issue... The eyelet part is the piece the wire goes through between the pulley and the reel... about 6" from the pulley in this picture which shows it horizontal... The part that is getting chewed up for me is this pulley piece... not the inner wheel but the outside cover around it. It's the "left" side (in this picture) where the wire rubs... Nick
  21. man oh man not sure what i'm doing wrong... my scotties are less than 2 years old and the one with the problems had the cable it came with on it. The grooves into the plastic pulley are significant. The eyelet on the boom, do you run that to the side (parallel with the water) or at 45 degrees to the water?
  22. wow really? Both of my riggers have the same issues... do you run your riggers out to the side or straight back? I run mine out to the side and the wire constantly rubs... I'm very surprised you DON'T have the same issue? Maybe I have mine setup wrong or something? Nick
  23. Where do you guys get the 2nd keel from? I'd rather not buy a $100 boat just for the keel? Nick
  24. My Scotty pulleys on my downriggers keep getting chewed up. I broke off two balls on my one rigger in the past few weeks and thought it was just bad wire... but upon closer inspection it appears the cable has chewed a slot into the plastic pulley and the beads are getting caught on it... is there another option other than continuingly replacing the pulleys? Nick
