  1. Thanks for the link, I will take a look at it. Every see the videos from Eric Haataja? He jigs for kings in Milwaukee and it looks like an insane time! I wondered why no one tries it here on Lake O? Trust me I was thinking that it may be a good time to try it when we are up there next week. I was also thinking more along the lines of jigging for the Lakers too. We will see what I come up with next week. Thanks again!
  2. Little Sodus bay So I have rented a cottage on Little Sodus bay from 8/26-9/2 and have never fished here. I fish with my kids and I will fish for anything as long as we are catching fish. I am not set up for trolling but do jig for trout in the finger lakes. In general I am wondering how the fishing is in the bay itself? How is the bass fishing and are there any pickerel or pike in the bay? My son really wants to catch a toothy predator! I would also be interested in any info on Small mouth fishing in the lake and even may give jigging out there a try for trout /salmon. Thanks for any info on the area and I will make sure to post our results from our vacation!
  3. Nice report! Funny how this lake fishes. I don't have much of any luck on the hard water but can be a great place to spend a day with the kids in the late spring / early summer.
  4. Looking to rent a cottage on Sodus bay A few years back I rented a place on Sodus bay and now the owners have changed and the price sky rocketed. Looking to rent a cottage that sleeps up to 8 for a week some time in August. Not a big fan of the online rental agencies so I thought I would try posting here to see what others may have. Thanks, Mike
  5. Chemung river. Glad it is close and no one around. I have been wanting to go up and chase kings but every year it gets more frustrating with crowds. Now I am going to concentrate on local fishing until the crowds thin out, if they thin out. Sent from my SM-G920V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. My son and I found a few this beautiful evening. He wanted to get a walleye and finally got his first. Nice to know the spots I used to fish (or close to the old spots) still hold some fish. Definitely a day I will remember for a long time. The look of surprise on his face when he saw he hooked his first eye! Sent from my SM-G920V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Short report. Windy! We did get a few small mouths fishing the shoal out in front of us and a few pike and large mouths but the wind every day made it tough to stay where you wanted to be. I heard the walleye bite was good but I never went out in the evenings, just spent time with the family. Got small mouths on tubes and drop shot rigs with hellgrammite and leech patterns in the 20-40 foot range. Beautiful place just wish I fished more. Less than 24 hours there, I dropped my phone in the water!!! My replacement is coming today. On a positive note the boat ran great! Going to try Keuka a couple days the end of the week. I hope the wind is not as bad and we get a few there to make up for it.....
  8. Leaving tomorrow and staying a week. I will make sure to post our results and hopefully post on the spot reports. Any last minute tips or reports for us? Sent from my SM-G920V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. Thanks for the report. We are leaving in 10 days for a week. So looking forward to it! My son is super excited as well. We will be staying right near Alex bay right across from Bolt castle and there are a couple rocky humps right out in front of the cottage we are renting. Hope to get into a few smallies myself. My son wants pike and musky, lol! I am sure I can get him into a pike or 2 but I told him we will see about the musky.
  10. Keep these reports coming! I will be up there the week of the 20th with the family. We just rented a cottage just outside of Alex bay. My son is dying to wet a line, as we are still going strong with baseball. We just won the district 6 10U all-star championship!!! We are looking for anything, bass, pike and of coarse he wants to get a muskie..... Hope the fishing is hot when we get there and the boat is running good!
  11. Nice fishing boat for sure. I assume your is the 19 footer? I have the 17 footer (1706) and like it a lot for fishing the finger lakes! Want to get up to the big lake some time but I am not set up for trolling. Funny I am considering down sizing to make it a little easier to launch with my 10 year old son... Good luck with your trade/sale!
  12. Thanks for all the replies. I am going to take the boat in and have the impeller replaced soon. Then when I get it back take it to the lake and see what happens with the water and see if I cn pn point where it is leaking from. Thanks again!
  13. Sorry, I got into stream mode for a bit. Not much shore access there. But there is a little near the launch, the only problem is it is shallow. You could possibally catch fish from shore there. You can launch canoes and kayaks from there with no problem. it is not much of a launch actually. Especially now with out the dock in. I may try it again back over there in a week or so.
  14. I read a few posts on replacing rivets. I am sure I have some loose ones on my boat but I want to try the garden hose test to make sure I don't have other problems as well. My question is, how hard is it to replace them if you have a finished floor? Can you do it from the under side and not tear up your whole floor? I am not sure how much I want to tear into the boat, or if I want to dump it real cheap and get a smaller fishing boat? Thanks!
  15. Thanks for the reply Mike. So I took my son out on Saturday and this is how it went.... Read the forecast and there were to be light and variable winds and we found the wind blowing out of the north but not bad. We also saw that they did not put the dock in yet but we managed fine. We motored out with the trolling motor and then tried the big motor. Started up just fine for the time out this year! We motored over the area around the inlet and almost as soon as the minnow hit the water a bass hit. My son landed 3 and I landed 2 all on minnows. As far as the panfishing went, we just could not get the fish to take the minnows in far enough to get a hook in them. We had a lot of hits and fish on for brief periods of time but did not land very many. I tried to switch to plastics but the wind picked up and changed directions on us. Every time we started to drift through the spot we were hooking up we had to change the "drift". We ended the day with a few crappies and a couple perch. Let them all go this time, hoping the gods will smile on us next time out. I am sure we would have caught more if the wind was as calm as was forecast? As for leaving the wind changed direction again and was out of the south pushing the boat to shore. This along with no dock made it interesting. Not sure if he is on here or not but thank you the kayaker that helped me load my boat! He was wearing waders and made things a lot easier, my son thanks you too!! As far as the weed treatments go, I am not sure about the effects on the fish and if it would harm you for eating them?
  16. Just wondering if anyone knows the lake conditions on Cayuta? I was thinking about heading out there with the boat and going after some pan fish with my son and cousins boy. I don't think there would be anymore ice left and it will give me an opportunity to run the boat just a little. Any reports on fishing there would be helpful also. If I get out I will report how we make out. Thanks, Mike
  17. Oh, unfortunately they will Sk8man, they do every year....
  18. Yeah I hear you about the dangers of downed trees. I am asking because I want to know things like that if I am going to be taking my son with me! From Botchers to Fitches I think I would stick to my canoe since I already have one. I have always liked the canoe, I feel comfortable enough in one to stand and fish and I have had it in some pretty swift rapids not in the Chemung of coarse, lol. I do like to idea of a Kayak. Maybe when my son gets older and he can carry one on his own we can get a couple. Not sure about the friends of the Chemung thing. I have thought about joining but have not yet. If they start to charge, I will stick to the bank. I am all for safety but some of the people I have seen out behind the house should not be in a boat to begin with. Then go out when the water is high with no skill is just putting your own life and the lives of others in jeopardy! With the prices of kayaks and canoes as low as they are and readily available to any Walmart shopper, I think it is going to get worse... Don't get me started on the clear cutting the state has done. I lost a great kids fishing spot when they flattened everything on the water side of the dike. There used to be a pond at the end of Esty street that they bulldozed in, I had a ton of memories there as a kid. And lets just say I was not happy when I took my kids there and there was nothing for a couple hundred yards between the dike and the water!!! Thanks for the input! Mike
  19. I would like to start a topic on the Chemung river fishing and thought this would be a good place to start. I get a few walleye each year from the river and now my son is really getting into fishing and likes to eat fish we catch. I have told him how good walleye are and he wants to try them. The river is right out behind the house, we live in Big Flats but don't catch too many walleye in this stretch. We did get quite a few 17+" small mouths the last couple of years right out back. We are going to start canoeing the river more this year, most likely down past Elmira where I hear there are more walleye. I grew up in Elmira and we used to get quite a few out behind Dunn Field. Does anyone use Jon boats in the river? I am thinking that it maybe a little more stable to fish out of than the canoe? Was thinking about selling my bigger 17 foot Spectrum and down sizing to a 12-14 foot jon or v-bottom. I think they would be more versatile. I would set it up like a row boat and use oars and them pick up a small motor or trolling motor. Thoughts? Anyways, not a bad topic while we wait for the river to drop and the season to re open. Thanks
  20. Nice bunch of fish. I was on a small "lake" on Sunday and we could not keep the small pickerel off the minnows. Got a few bass and a couple perch too. I am still waiting for a day like you had. I have yet to have a hot bit like that in all my days ice fishing, maybe it is time to switch up my approach? I am usually fishing with my kids so it is more tipups and I move around a little jigging.
  21. Looks more like spooning....
  22. I think we can all agree that there needs to be something done with the state of Catherine Creek. I am sure there are more streams out there that could use more attention but Catherine has been a hot topic! It was by far my most favorite place to fish as a teen/young man. That is until '96 when the skies opened up and dumped about 5 inches of rain in less than a half an hour.(I believe someone else stated '94 but I am almost certain it was '96) The state decided to flatten everything out and empty the stream of anything that could hold back water, to save a few houses and businesses THAT WERE BUILT IN A FLOOD PLAIN!! Slowly the state came in and tried to correct the mistakes that they caused and tried to put in some "stream improvements". Which did not last long, almost everything they built has already rotted away or is already in desperate need of repair, AGAIN!! Everyone blames the DEC, specifically the Conservation officers. They are doing what they can with limited resources and I for one commend them for their efforts! I think you should not aim your frustrations towards the CO's but rather the fisheries "experts"!! Here is an example of what I am talking about.... I just dont understand?!?! I like what they are doing here, re-enforcing the bank with rip-rap to help protect the property, but they RUINED a great stretch of the creek in doing so!! Those of you that know this spot (I am not spot burning here as there is nothing left but shallow riffles) know that there used to be a couple nice holes and a deep run with boulders. Just last year I hooked quite a few in this 100 yards of stream using floats and the water was at least 3-4 feet deep, which is very deep on this stream now a days!! My question is why not do what they did in past and come through and dig out the hole, especially after running your machinery through the stream and filling it in?? They have done this in most of the stream below Sleepers and now moving into the upper half and this is where the majority of the spawning happens on the main stem of the system. Back in the late 90's early 2000's I had contacted the DEC to volunteer my time to help out where ever needed on Catherine a few years after graduating from FLCC where I studied fisheries and graduated with an AAS in Conservation. I was told, no thank you. And then when I questioned why they were not digging out the creek after making improvements, I was told that they wanted the stream to go back to its natural state?!? After running bulldozers all over it, I said? I didnt hear anything after that... I think if they are not going to see their mistakes in how they are handling the "re-habilitation" of the system something else has to be done. Close the whole fishery? Not fair to the boatless angler. Not to mention, that would not stop the people that live along the stream from doing what they have always done. Change the opening day? Maybe, but most years a good majority of the spawn has already happened prior to the opener. This year was a strange, cold year. Close the feeder streams? Yes DEFINATELY!! Wadding restrictions? Yes definately. I am sure there are other things that can be put in place like the 1 fish limit, but this just puts more burden on the already heavily out numbered CO's. I still think with today technology you could "deputise" concerned anglers on the streams. Allow them to hand out tickets, kind of like self patroling. I think there are quite a few of us that already do this by taking pictures/video of illegal activities and take pictures of license plates and call the 1-800 number. 1 more observation I would like to share... My first stocked Fingerlakes strain of rainbow (18", 3rd year class) caught out of Catherine Creek. Notice the fin clips. Can be a good thing or a bad thing, depends on how you look at it. Good - the fish they are stocking are healthy, strong and doing well! Bad - It is a sign of the end of an era...... Again, my $.02.
  23. Hey Barrington, how was the shore ice?
