  1. I want to see pictures of those!!! Do any of you plan your trips or just pay attention to the lunar cycles? I downloaded the app "time to fish lite" it is free and it tells you the lunar phase, best times to fish from those and gives a rating of the day. I have tried not to plan trips around these as on poor days I have caught fish and on best days not caught any, as I am sure weather also plays a role that the app can not take in to concideration. But the last time I was out was on Keuka for the perch and we did pretty good and it was one of the highest ranking days of February. I plan on going on Saturday and Sunday this week and it is at almost its lowest for the month, so we will have to see how it plays out.... Thoughts?
  2. Nicely done!!! Hoping to get out there this weekend and get my kids to hook up on a couple. Last time I could not keep the perch away from our tip ups to concentrate on the jigging. Not a bad problem to have!!!
  3. Opted out for yesterday, to make up some points with the wife!!! Going back out on Saturday for sure. How was the slush if there was any? Makes me a little nervous with the kids getting their feet wet. Nice fish by the way. Last week was my first time jigging for lakers and it was a blast!!! My kids say it is kind of like watching a video game on the flasher when the fish come screaming off the bottom after the jig then you take it away from them and the chase is on!!!
  4. Nice pile! Looks like the start to a good beer batter fish fry right there!!
  5. Thanks for all the kind words!! Yette - to be honest at the time I never even gave it a thought about the record thing, I dont think it would have broken the 3.5 pound mark. But I seriously concidered mounting it, also thought about sending in a pic to the DEC. I also thought about releasing some but they were so deep their swim bladders were out their mouths. Can you burp them like a trout?
  6. Started Saturday on Keuka off of a friends place about half way down the Pen Yan branch. We fished from about 10' out to 45 foot, in this range we set out our tip ups just scouting as this was our first trip to this location. It was a great time as we were unable to get all our tip ups set before our first flag. Usually this means it is going to be a good day, well that was an understatement!! We found the "elephants" that I always hear about, plus I think my daughter caught "perchzilla"!!! Found a few pickrel in the mix as well The kids got a little chilly so they went in my buddys place to warm up and I went out to the 90 foot area to try my hand a jigging lakers. We found a few My first ever through the ice!!! another My buddy got 1 as well, first time on the ice fishing. It took him all of about 2 minutes to get one. The pic is on my phone and will try to put it up later, but it was a little bigger than mine. Soon after the wind kicked up and the snow started coming down pretty good so I started packing up as the kids were ready to go. I had a GREAT time on Keuka and I did not want to leave but I did not want to force the little ones to stay and ruin their view on fishing. Anyone ever try one of those Eagle Claw inline reels? Are they junk or am I not adjusting it right?? The thing would go free spool when I would set the hook?!?! I could have caught at least a half dozen more but the reel was all messed up!! Sunday I went to a pond with another friend and his 2 sons. They took me to crappy corner and the name says it all. I set 1 tip up and before I got the second set we had 3 flags on the first. Ended the day with a small pile in an hour and a half at most. Not bad (minus the finger) Ended with a few more than this but this is the pic I got The bass was released, but my friends son wanted it in the pic.... I know it was not the best but the best so far this year by far for me!!! Cant wait to get back out already.
  7. This post is probably too late but the fishing and the ice is good on Keuka. Fished down about 8 miles and we had a solid 6-8 inches, mostly black ice. Caught monster perch all on tip ups 15-45 foot, and some lakers jigging out over 90' suspended. Also got pickrel, no bass. Good luck!
  8. Thanks HVS!!! Yes I got some this afternoon. Went it to get fatheads and bass minnows and they had the emeralds. I must have missed them the last time I was in. Did not mean to post false information, great shop and good bait!!
  9. Thanks for the replies!! Was really looking forward to a whole day of fishing with teh kids, now the weather forcast changed. Winds forcasted for Saturday went from 6 yesterday to 19 today?!?! Well I am glad I bought teh anchor system for the Nanook. Hopefully the kids will last a little while anyway....
  10. I live in Big Flats and I am headed to Keuka on Saturday. Just wondering where I can get bait between here and there? I have been going to HVS but want to get some emeralds, which they havnt had this year. Thanks for any info! Mike
  11. Yes that is all that matters!! I had my kids out on Cayuta yesterday, not a single flag!! We had a good time on the ice though. I need to find a better fish catching body of water so my kids dont loose interest. Thinking about hitting Honeoye soon if the ice stays good. Just a longer drive for us....
  12. IS that the place behind the hotel, I think it is a Super 8? When I was in college we fished it from shore in the spring and fall a couple times, Big bass! Also I hear a kid reeled in a human hand once from there once?!?!? Lol....
  13. I purchased the Lowrance x67c (i think) ice machine a couple years ago and love it. This unit can be switched from flasher mode to graph mode very easily. When I purchased my boat this spring I went to Cabelas and bought a transducer to mount to my trolling motor so I could use it off of that for jigging lakers, which I have not done off of my boat yet so I can tell you how well that works yet. The ice machine is an lcd display but have not had an issue with it. Most of my fishing is with the kids so I dont venture out too much when it is really cold out. The only thing it is missing is a gps. I love the unit, but I cant say that it has helped my numbers when ice fishign!! I think I used to get just as many when I sent my jig down to the bottom and whet at it blind. At least it gives you and your kids something to look at, almost like a video game at times as you try to intice that strike. For me more times than not it just frustrates me as I see fish appear then they move on, its probably just me.....
  14. Got out yesterday before the Winter classic to check the thickness. My son and I went to a big pond and found 5+ in every hole we drilled. The ice was solid and the fishing was slow. Went out for about 2 hours and only had a few dinks hit our jig rods. Hopefully the snow forcasted for today and tomorrow does not screw it all up, hoping to get out on some Steuben waters this weekend. Anyone know how Lamoka is doing? Thanks and good luck!!!
  15. Nice pics, my favorite one is of the kid! Not only is the fish big but the kid is a Pens fan!!!
  16. I have one of those old hummingbird flashers, bought it off of ebay for like 75. I then picked up an ice machine so I never used the hummingbird. If anyone is interested I would sell for 50.....
  17. Thank you very much, the information you provided is very helpful!! Now I have to see if the kids want to take a longer drive. Hopefuly my kids and I will be successful and we will share the info with you!!!
  18. Just looking for new water to explore this winter and with all the talk about Otisco and the big walleyes it got me thinking. Since I fish with the kids most of the time and it is a 1.5-2 hour drive for me to get there I probably wont get over there but I was wondering what the ice fishing was like. I am sure, just like the other lakes there is a good panfish population along with Muskies, and bass. What else could you target? Does the ice get safe on this lake most years? Any access points? This may not be the place to post this but I thought I would try. Thanks for any help.
  19. Got a question, if the lake is suffering from the blue-green algae in the summer, what effects if any does it have on the fish? I mean if the water is bad in the summer what would be the problem keeping and eating the fish while ice fishing? I have not fished there in years and now that my kids are really enjoying ice fishing Honeyoe is on my to-do list for this winter. But if the fish are bad I dont want to go there and possibly put my kids health in jeopardy!!!
  20. I took the family camping up to Sampson State Park and had a great time! The park is very nice and clean. Put the boat in the water on Monday and spent the whole day out with the family. Just drove it around to see how she runs. The kids got to drive it for the first time and had a blast. My girls tried to go tubing but that did not turn out so well, they got scared on their first attempt and that was it. I got the boat up to 28 MPH with 5 of us on board, I didnt think that was too bad. But when I took it out by myself I still didnt get any faster? While I was out I did notice a couple of things. First my gas gusge would bounce from like 3/4 to empty so I have no idea how much gas I have on board. The other thing that caught my attention was the fact that it was very hard to steer to the left but really easy to steer to the right? I even moved everyone around on the boat to get the weight evenly distributed. Any thoughts on either of these? The boat is quite nice, even though it needs updating like carpet or other flooring and minor wood repair. I was pleased to see how nice it sat in the water. It sits nice and high. Already thinking about putting the down riggers on it for next year!!! I was a little disappointed in the fact that the kids were not as excited as me but they are still young and hopefully they will want to get out with me fishing! And the lake was a little rougher on the other days so we didnt get it out as much as I would have liked to. Thanks for all of the help on my other posts, I was finally able to get out with the family!!!
  21. WOO HOO!!! I got it running!! Got the new battery and it would turn over a bit quicker. I got the starter rebuilt and it turned over a lot quicker and it still would not start?!?! I finally emailed the previous owner and asked if there was a trick to getting it started. The reply was that if it had been a while they would always use a little starter fluid. So since I could not get it started with the rebuilt starter I figured what the heck, I just want to hear it run again!!! I took the air intake off, well I could only get 5 of the 6 bolts out and sprayed a tiny bit of starter fluid into the top 2 carbs and it started up no problem. I let it run for a little bit to get some of the gas with the seafoam through it and then shut it off. I waited about 15 minutes and it started up again no problem. I let it set for a couple hours and tried it again with no problems. I then gave it a day and tried, again no problem!! Just glad to hear it run again!!! Should I be concerned at all about this? Or is it just that the motor is 21 years old and it need a little kick to get started? Well we will be camping at Sampson this coming week, so I hope to be tooling around the lake with the kids in the boat. Thanks again for all the help and replies on my post!!
  22. Can anyone suggest a place to have my motor worked on in the Elmira Corning area. Can anyone tell me about Jamisons in Campbell? Or up in Watkins would be the closest lake. I may see about having the starter worked on but then I wouldn't mind taking it somewhere after that. Thanks for all the help!!
  23. Thanks for the quick replies fellas!! If you don't mind me asking where are you from and where was it that you took your starter to get it fixed?? I see a new one is $150-$200. Thanks again for all of the help and stuff! This is a great site and you are all very helpful!!
