Braid as main line for trolling - no leader Poll question
yukiginger replied to yukiginger's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Thanks, guys. -
So, I have a friend who respooled his downrigging rods last year with braid. (I don't know the brand or lb. test but I'm sure it's in the 15-20 lb. range.) He is not running any mono or flouro leader at any time from the main line to the swivel. This spring while Brown fishing I told him I think he needs to run mono or flouro leader or even respool some of his older line with 8-10 lb. mono and see if this would make a difference. I run braid on one of my dipsy rods (which doubles for muskie fishing) and I know some of you guys do, too, but I believe you would still always be running mono leaders to your lures. So, the poll questions are: 1. Would you run braid at all on your downrigger rods, especially for spring Brown trout fishing? 2. If you do run braid as the main line on downrigger setups would you run it without mono or fluoro leaders? Thank you for your answers.

yukiginger replied to yukiginger's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Nice meeting you and talking with you at the launch, W.W.IV. We hardly manage the lines with two or three anglers in the boat. I don't know how you solo guys do it! -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Jersey Star ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):4/8 Time on Water:3 hrs Weather/Temp:cool/breezy Wind Speed/Direction:ESE 5-10 Waves: Surface Temp: 40.8 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated:2 Species Breakdown:Browns Hot Lure: none Trolling Speed: 2.0-2.7 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 5-15 Lure Depth: 1-5 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Got out late afternoon. When we got back near the east end of Durand hit another one - this time on a green razor spoon 5' down on the rigger. All fish were in 5-7' of water. BlueEye, if you get over near Rochester at all I'd be willing to loan you my gear for your outing. I've actually got a pretty good selection of trolling and casting baits, and although I've fished for muskies on Chautauqua, Waneta, Nippissing in Ontario, and Hopatcong in NJ - believe it or not- I've never actually caught one. Someone might as well show me how it's done, even if I'm not there! I live in Webster and work in Rochester. You would just have to get the stuff back to me is all. Best to email me directly at [email protected] if you are interested. MarkG -
Pike spots near Rochester and Big Live Bait
yukiginger replied to yukiginger's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Art worked out for us and provided some nice chubs. Unfortunately they didn't produce for us. Fished the far south end near the buoy. Never managed a hit on the live bait. I had some action on some good sized pike/musky lures but didn't land a fish. I had one on for about 5 seconds but he came unhooked (never got a look at him). Had a short strike by a medium pike on a bucktail just off the bow of the boat. Lots of fish swirling and feeding down there. We were baffled that our suckers didn't get any attention. We tried different riggings and certainly had some active bait. Nice day down on the lake for sure. -

Thanks for the reminder, Stinky. Art's it is in the morning for some sucker chubs. Going to try Conesus. For those of you wondering: Bayside at I-Bay south will have suckers later in the morning; I called one shop at Sodus Point - no pike minnows or chubs; Bay Bridge on Sodus was out of pike minnows (should have more in the week). -

Thanks, Zach. -
So my neighbor wants to do some live bait fishing for pike this weekend. We live in Webster. He's talked about Port Bay and we have the options of Irondequoit Bay, Sodus Bay, Conesus (although I've read that the docks are pulled - thanks for the updates, guys). I haven't done much live bait fishing for pike since I was a kid, but he wants to do it. The question is where to get some big minnows. Any suggestions from you guys on a good location for some still fishing as well as some casting, and more importantly a good bait shop where we can get some proper bait? Would like to stay within an hour of home. Thanks.

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Gorthy ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):5/21 and 5/22 Time on Water: Fri. 2-6; Sat. 6am-11 am Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: mid 40s-High 50s Location:IBay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 2 Total Boated:1 Species Breakdown:King, Brown Hot Lure: Purple/White spoon??? Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 2.0-2.8 Boat Depth: 30-100 Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Friday afternoon got out and headed out past a couple boats that were at about 50' to see if anyone was out deeper. Stopped in 100' and nobody was home; couldn't see any boats out deeper so trolled in to see if we could find fish. Slow going. Got to 30' and we hit a 10 lb. king on the purple/white spoon. Nothing else Friday. Saturday started earlier. Again couldn't get them to go. Spoons and stickbaits, spin doctor/fly off the wire. Late in the morning we were in 50' of water west of the bay and saw a fish to the surface and rod bouncing. By the time we got to the rod the line had snapped - release malfunction. Odd, because the release was working fine on our changes all day. Must have gotten wrapped around our cable somehow. Anyway, that was on a blue/yellow spoon. Looked like a decent brown when it surfaced. Hope y'all did better than we did. MarkG ====================
