Cayuga Barney and Bear's 32nd Annual Trout Derby
Fishbowl836 posted a topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Attached is the entry form for Barney and Bear's 32nd Annual Trout Derby, May 19th and 20th, 2018. You can sign up at Bear's Baits, located at Myers Park in Lansing New York. Attached is the entry form below. Also, Bear is working very hard to establish a second weigh-in station for future tournaments. This is proving to be more difficult then most people understand. He acknowledges the situation and is trying to work something out for future tournaments. Any question please contact Bear at 607-387-5576. Barney and Bear's 32nd Annual Trout Derby.pdf -
Who did the work? Great job. I have the details and numbers for a mount of a 14# 09 oz, 34 1/2 long Landlock Salmon from Cayuga Lake that I still am looking to get done over the winter. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Re-Powering my 17’ Aluminum Deep “V” 2004 Smoker Craft

I am told break-in needs to be in the water. Apparently you need to go to many different rpm's during this period of break-in. No low low speed trolling at all. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Re-Powering my 17’ Aluminum Deep “V” 2004 Smoker Craft I currently have a 25 Hp 4 stroke Yamaha Electric Start tiller (No Power Trim and Tilt) on my boat but due to an Overheating issue this spring and continued problems I am considering re-powering my boat. Opt #1 – Replacing the current motor with another Yamaha 4 stroke was my first choice. The boat is rated for a 40 Hp motor so I have been thinking about going up to a 30 Hp motor. The problem is the new 30 Hp weights almost 240 lbs compared to my current motor which weighs 155 lbs. The another option was to go to the new 25 Hp motor that has been made into a portable unit that only weigh 126 lbs. In both cases the cost of these motors are higher than the other two option and the current quotes do not include the power trim and tilt. Break in period of 10 hours before trolling again. Opt #2 – Replacing the current motor with a new 2017/18 Mercury 4 stroke. This motor would be almost the same weight as the current motor. The new one would have the EFI, Electronic Start and Power Trim and Tilt. Motor seems nice and it seems like parts would be pretty easy to get in the future. Also preventative maintenance seems to be pretty straight forward. One down side is the break in period of 10 hours before I can be back to fishing again. Opt #3 – Replacing the current motor with a new 2018 Evinrude 2 stroke ETC 30 Hp. The price of this unit falls right between the other two options. It also has Electronic Start, Power Trim and Tilt and has a trolling option to increase or decrease the speed in 50 rpm increments. This motor also comes with the longest warranty of 6 years. No maintenance until either 300 hours or 3 years whichever comes first and no break in period. I would like your opinion on what motor you would choose to replace my current motor and why? If you or any of your friends have had any bad experiences with any of these motors in the past I would like to hear about it. All of these motor seem nice but I am just not sure what to do at this point. I am so afraid that the boat will not fish the same in the future. Any help or words of advice on this matter would be appreciated.

Will keep you all posted, but currently I'm not sure my motor situation will be fixed by then. My head gasket went on my 25hp 4 stroke Yamaha and I am still reviewing my options. Would like to save the money to up grade to a bigger boat next year but I still have not finalized my plans. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -

Yes, I agree. Like I said earlier, one of the issues is can we get into long point guaranteed without them wanting their hands in the prize fund. Bear used to have a weigh-in station at T falls, but that stopped because they started wanting to charge to get in just to weigh fish and they also wanted a certain amount of the prize fund. "Bear" is concerned that the same thing would happen at Long point. Also Dean's Cove is so small we don't want to have that as a weigh-in station due to parking issues. One of the best ideas that we've came up with was possibly launch a pontoon boat and keep it somewhere in that general area (north end). Could you imagine just motoring up to the boat and handing your fish over to be weighed in and then back out in the water you go. This has many advantages. One is the easy access for boaters and two, fish could be brought to the weigh-in station alive and in live well's so that they could be released if they don't meet the weight. Yes this doesn't work for the tournaments in the dead of summer due to the warm water on the surface but, it does work for those tournaments when the water is a little cooler and we can save fish. I hate to see fish killed trying to get to the weight-in station just to find out they don't make weight. Just my opinion. We will see. We will continue to try to make it better looking at the weigh-in station issue and the dates of the tournament as it relates to the FLTA tournament schedule. Jim, was down to the park late this afternoon, not many big fish on the board. Sounds like it was tough fishing today with the blow. Will try to get down early tomorrow morning and get a picture posted. If not will post a picture of the final board tomorrow night for sure. Yes Mike, please give me the schedule as soon as possible. I will show the schedule to Steve (owner of Bear's bait shop) to see what can be done. Most of Bear's tournaments have been scheduled for the same weekend for many years now. Not sure how willing he would be to adjust, but I am willing to sit down and talk to him. We still are talking about a way to go through and get a second weight in station. Long point state park seems the most likely however, one of the problems is getting the permission because the state always wants their piece of the pie if you know what I mean. Good luck to all of those in the FLT tournament tomorrow. Wayne Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

OK understand, I think SK8man is correct. When I blow up the picture a little closer it looks like the spots on the guilt plate are a little different. Either way I know there's been a lot of big Silvers in the lake this year. Maybe that's a photo of the 12 pound salmon that was caught during the salvation army tournament. suttontroller94, yes it looks like my fish. Why do you ask? I took the fish down to Bear's Bait shop this morning to have the weight certified. I got all of the measurements that I needed to do a fiberglass mount and left the cooler and fish with Steve for his efforts. I only eat fired haddock therefore Steve ended up with some nice salmon fillets. -

Thanks Jim, yes it was quite a 25 minute battle. I did the same thing with the big Laker I caught about 3 weeks ago. I assumed it was another big Laker this time as well, so I put the rod back down in the holder to clear other rods. For about five minutes while I was clearing other rods this fish was just pulling drag and the rod was setting in the holder. Imagine the look on my face when I saw this fish coming to the surface and it was a Salmon. I just about shXX my pants. After missing the fish twice with the net I did get him the third time and by now it was getting pretty dark with no lights on. It will be something I will never forget. Wayne -

Headed out of Myers point for about one hour of fishing before sunset and it was well worth it. Fished from Portland Point to just north of Salmon Creek. On my second pass right in front of the creek I caught this monster Landlocked Salmon on a wire Dipsy using a spin doctor and fly. Again, Iron Duke's trolling fly - "UV wild child" did the damage again. This salmon was weighed and measured at Bear's this morning about 9:30. Fish weighed 14 lbs. 9 oz., 34 1/2 inches long and the largest girth measurement was 16 inches around. I have all the measurements to do a fiberglass mount. Does anyone have a recommendation? Seem to be having a problem up loading the photo. Is there a size limit? Have uploaded from my Go Pro camera before with no issues. Not sure what's going on.
