  1. I would estimate 20-24 pounds but that depends on the girth of the fish. Here's a chart from the Oak website: http://triflash.hallcrash.net/free/PrintChart.aspx Good luck, - Chris
  2. Tim, That is a very nice explanation. Here's a topographic map of the lake (I think there's a link to this on the Professional site). http://demo.geogarage.com/noaa/?lat=43. ... 875&zoom=9 Play around with moving the map until you see the gray circle in the middle with a white cross hairs. If you move the gray circle to a point on the map, it'll show you GPS coordinates in the far left corner of exactly the gray circle and it'll show you exactly what Tim is talking about. Hope it helps, - Chris
  3. Howie - he's mentioning a North line of latitude (i.e. a depth line heading north), not longitude. - Chris
  4. Here's a pic of my brother's fish from Sunday 8/16 (it was 26.15# to be exact) Good luck to all -thanks for looking..... - Chris
  5. Howie, When I mention 32 W line or 34 W line, I'm referring to "minutes" of longitude. When I say 17N or 18N lines I'm referring to latitude. I don't usually mention latitude lines b/c it varies port to port b/c of the contour of the southern shore of the lake and I'd rather reference depth. In front of I-Bay, the heading at the pier head is about 77°32' of longitude. As you head west, the minutes of longitude increase to 33W, 34W, etc. until it changes to 78° and starts all over again. D=degrees, M=minutes, S=seconds Some GPS units instead of reading as DD° MM.MMMM' of latitude, they read as DD° MM' SS". If your reading is 77° 34' 30" that equals 77° 34.50' W. (b/c 30 seconds is 0.5 of a minute) If you have 77° 34' 45", it would equal 77° 34.75' (b/c 45 seconds is .75 of a minute) The seconds aren't really important b/c I typically don't break it down to that much detail, instead I'll just mark a waypoint and give the "minute" lines as a general reference area. Hope this helps.... - Chris
  6. Thanks Hans - man that's a great story to have two 30+ kings on the same trip!!!! You hit the nail on the head with speed - we kept things around 2.2 mph at the ball for the most part on Sunday, but it's great to know the kings are still in there.... Take care, - Chris
  7. Thanks gentlemen... Tim - an interesting thing happened tonight - I looked closely at my wire reels and I would say the wire is about 1/4 " above the top of the gold spool. It's on very tight. We had a fish take a 400' run of wire and then my brother says "...uh oh, the reel is stuck..." Wouldn't you know it, the wire was jammed between the edge of the gold spool and the black casing on the reel. We were able to pull it out by hand (the wire frayed a tiny bit) and luckily land the fish. However, if it was a big king, forget about it. Needless to say after the season I will remove my backing and just fill the spool with wire, even if it's below the level of the spool itself. Thanks guys for your help and concern... - Chris

We stayed around 200-250 fow and boated four kings - all between 10 and 15 pounds. Most fish were taken near small bait "arcs" on the graph. We didn't find huge pods, but there was enough bait to hold fish. Steady north troll was best, between 200-250 fow. Lure details: Wire Dipsy: - #3, 240' out, Kelly green spinny/Siggs Green Krinkle Fly took two fish Rigger: 115' down, 42 second with black ladder and glow ladder tape took one fish Rigger: 115' down, free slider with an NBK took the fourth fish 8/16: Just got in from a hot bite and hot temp. No breeze at all and consequently the black flies were out a little. Nonetheless, the fishing was great. We had two doubles and landed three out of the four fish. We fished a bit deeper than yesterday b/c we heard about the good steelhead bite. We started in 400 fow and worked south. Every set-up took fish tonight - largest fish was our second 27#'er of the year, along with several other mature 20+ kings and we boated around 8 or 9 tonight. We fished out typical king program, but had a few steelhead lures on the sliders which took kings, but not one steelie the whole weekend. We concentrated on a south/south west troll today and it worked great. Lure details: Wire Dipsy: #3, 240', Kelly green spinny Siggs green crinkle fly took several Wire Dipsy: #3, 280', Green dot spinny/hammer fly took one Rigger: 115', 42 second NK 28 took the 27# king and one or two others Rigger: 95', NBK Stinger took a 20# er Free slider: on 95' rigger, DW SS Matt Rock special took a major king Free slider: on 115' rigger DW SS Steelie Dan took one Good luck to all - I should have a cell phone pic or two this week, - Chris
  9. Hi Tim, I think the 19 strand feels like a smaller diameter than the Malin or Mason stuff, but I believe it's the same diameter 0.015. I know the line capacity of a Sealine 47 is 480 yds/14#, and 15# test mono is about 0.015 diamter, so theorectically you could get about 1400 feet of wire on one of those reels. However, now that I think about it, maybe I'm overfilling my reels? Are you supposed to fill your line right up to the top level of the gold spool, or can you keep going above the gold spool almost to the level of the level winder? Thanks Tim for any advice you might have, - Chris
  10. Tim, How do I know? I just bought two brand new Sealine 47LCA's and tried to fill the first one with 1000' of Torpedo 19 strand wire. It was about 1/4" or more below the level of the top of the spool so I tried to unwind all of the wire and then it knotted up so I shot $40 in the garbage b/c I couldn't re-use it. I put about 250 ft. or so of Powerpro backing and when I put on a second spool of 1000' of wire it filled the reel up almost to the level-wind above the spool line. Maybe I'm not supposed to have my reels so full? Thanks - sorry if I was misleading, - Chris
  11. I like to use backing on all my wire set-ups b/c the 1000' of wire only fills the spool on a 47LC or Sealine about half way. Consequently, the line counters aren't very accurate. I put on about 100 yds. of Powerpro backing and tie it to the wire using an Albright knot and a dab of knot glue. I also put a small wire crimp on the tag end of the wire so it won't unravel. Honestly, I've never got down to the backing on a fish run, but the backing seems to allow the wire to fill the reel a little better. Good luck! - Chris
  12. Hi Bud, No - I didn't see it or hear it at all..... Great temp!!!! Hope to see ya this weekend - we'll be at it Sat AM, Sun PM.... Later, - Chris
  13. Mark, We saw ya come in last night - we were fishing for bass in my brother's Glastron on the east side of A-dock near dusk. What sort of down temp. did you have? Thx, - Chris
  14. Jim, Great report - this year the Steelie Dan spoon has been what orange crush has been in the past....without a doubt it has been our best spoon. I've been a bit disappointed with the paint on the DW spoons this year myself - they seem to be wearing off quite easily. Thanks for the report! - Chris
  15. Nice fish guys! I didn't have much luck trolling south, it seemed like east worked the best for me (it was tough however with the waves when it started to build a little). Anthony - nobody ever told ya that "stretching" with a fishing rod was the best treatment for a sore back? Take care everyone - we'll be back at it next weekend.... - Chris
  16. Gentlemen, Here's a few things which have been working for me the past few weeks: 1.) Temp: Find good down temp. but don't be afraid to find fish "out of temp." especially if you see them on your fish finder. What we've been doing is: drop our probe until we find the thermocline. Yesterday and today it was around 120-140 fow. My probe doesn't work very well below 145' or so, so we park the probe rigger somewhere around there and work upward. 2.) Speed: We have been fishing 2.0-2.4 mph at the ball. Sometimes the current is ripping and my sog on my GPS says 3.1 mph, but the ball speed is only 2.2 mph or so. It seems like we're hauling a## sometimes, but I always trust the downspeed on my probe. 3.) Spoons: lately green has been key. NBK and 42 second spoons on the deepest lures and I usually pick a "steelhead" color for my free sliders - say DW SS Steelie Dan or any red or orange lure. 4.) Flashers: I run green flashers/flies (Kelly green spinny/crinkle green fly, Die Hard, 42 second) on one wire and usually a white or chrome ( Green dot Spinny, white on white glow/purple mirage or Hammer Fly) on my other wire 5.) Flasher/Fly leader length: total length is 20-22" from the end of the flasher to the end of the fly 6.) Use free sliders on your riggers I'm constantly tinkering with speed, direction and depth on my boat more than anything else. I always start with my "go-to" spread of lures first and I DO NOT change lures - even after two hours of dead time - until I get my first hit. As soon as I do, I look at speed of the boat, depth, direction of my troll, and THEN what lure it was. However, the most important thing is have fun, give it time and read as much as you can from this site. This site has the best fisherman/women I've ever met and most are always eager to help. PM me anytime if you have questions - good luck, - Chris
  17. Fishing Report Chris Fishing report: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8/8/09 Time on Water:6-8:30 AM Weather/Temp:60's, sunny Wind Speed/Direction: SW 5-10 mph Waves: 1' Surface Temp: 71-72 degrees Location: I-Bay north LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): 31-32 W lines =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 5 Total Boated:5 Species Breakdown: 4 kings, 1 steelhead Hot Lure: 42 second NK mag, kelly green Spinny/crinkle green fly, NBK slider Trolling Speed: 2.0-3.1 sog Down Speed: 2.0-2.2 mph Boat Depth: 160-220' Lure Depth: rigger 130' with free slider, wire diver 240-300' out, #3 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Fished solo this morning when my fishing buddy bailed at 5 AM with a hangover....I fished a little east and stayed tight between the 31 and 32 lines. I fished two rods and it was all I could handle. Screen early was great in 160 fow, then the fish scattered. I would have stayed longer but I had three "un-revivable" fish I had to keep so I pulled the plug and went in at 8:30 AM as soon as I met my limit. Personally, I'm not sure what the rule is, but to me it's "unsportsmanlike" to keep fishing once you have a limit box, especially if you catch a mature king... I have been using the same lures over and over again for the past month or so - Kelly green Spinny/crinkle green fly, 42 second Mag and NK28 spoons, DW SS steelie Dan and an NBK and they continue to catch fish. Two fish hit the 42 second rigger down 130', two fish the Kelly green Spinny (early in the morning 240' then later 300' out) and one on the NBK free slider on my 130' rigger. Kings were mid-teens, steelhead was around 5-6 pounds. Best direction was actually an eastward troll today. Down temp. was between 50-55 degrees at 130', depending on boat speed and depth. Best down speed seemed to be 2.0-2.2 mph. Good luck to all, - Chris
  18. Fishing Report Chris ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8/7/09 Time on Water:3-7:00 PM Weather/Temp: Sunny, 70's Wind Speed/Direction:NW 5 mph Waves: 1 ft. Surface Temp: 70 Location:I-Bay north and west LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): 31-34 lines W =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 6 Total Boated:6 Species Breakdown:4 kings, 1 Atlantic, 1 steelhead Hot Lure: Kelly green Spinny/Crinkle green fly, 42 second NK Mag, DW SS Steelie Dan, NBK Trolling Speed: 1.8-2.8 sog Down Speed: 2.0-2.4 mph Boat Depth: 160-220 fow Lure Depth: rigger 85', 135', free slider on 85' rigger, wire Dipsy 240' #3 setting ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Great Fishing tonight - all fish released except 22# King (I tried the water revive technique in my fish well but it was a no-go after I caught it on the wire). Largest king was on the wire Dipsy 240', #3, no-ring, Kelly Green Spinny/Green Fly. It ripped out 500 feet of wire before we slowed the boat down and took control. Kelly green Spinny also caught a smaller king. The highlight of our night was a "true double" on one rod - I went through a small school of fish around 160' and had a double hook-up on my 85' rigger with a free slider. An Atlantic took an NBK and the Steelhead took the free slider DW SS Steelie Dan both on the same rod. It was pretty cool!! Otherwise, we landed two other smaller kings on the deeper 135' rigger early on in the afternoon. Down temp. was around 52-55 degrees about 135' down. Good luck to all this weekend, - Chris ====================
  19. Matthew, I don't mean to jump in here, but I recently respooled all of my Diawa Sealine reels with your 19 strand wire. I have had my eye on this line for awhile now and waited until I purchased two new reels for re-spooling. Could you please clarify how a Diawa reel is different from any other level wind reel and why you don't have any recommendations with your retailers which mentions that Diawa reels are "not" recommended? I haven't noticed any fraying - yet - and we have landed some mighty nice kings using your line and I'm concerned that it might cause a problem down the line. Thanks, - Chris
  20. John, Good job on the fish - the lake has been fantatic these past few weeks... FYI - there has been a lot of sub-surface debris lately and we have been picking up a lot of stuff on the rods. It only takes one rig not "looking" right or working right and it'll ruin your spread. We check our riggers and wires every 15-20 minutes or so and twice last week as soon as we cleaned 'em off we had a fish on within five minutes. Bottom line, if the rod doesn't look right, the Dipsy's are "pulling" more, or more importantly the hot bite quiets down, check your rods! Later - congrats on the fish, - Chris
  21. Way to go Mark!!! You had a sweet box o' fish at Mayer's yesterday.... We got out last night with a decent screen around 160', but we got hammered by a crazy storm (40 mph winds, 5 footers, hail, 50 feet of visibility) so we motored back in after only 15 minutes of rods in the water with our knees buckling..... Needless to say, it was the strongest storm I've ever been in and ever want to be in on the water.... Great fish bud!!! - Chris
  22. Frank - Sounds like you and you, your dad and your nephew tore it up!!! Way to go - great fish! - Chris
  23. Scott, Way to go bud - did you get a chance to break in the new rods/riggers? Great fish!!!! - Chris
