  1. Hey Mark, You're right.........he did it to himself........my bad on the "semantics" I hope you had a great day......FYI we'll be pulling the boat in the next two weeks, sad as it may be...... Later, - Chris
  2. Mark, Happy Birthday - more imortant than your service to our country and dedication to this site......thanks for getting rid of NewEnglandCharter!!!!! -Chris
  3. Hilarious Walt - you posted a legitimate reply (one of your first) however it was tied to something you want to sell......... Pj - that's a pretty great deal on cleaning your hull - I agree with everyone that you should pay the $110.00 to have it done. Good luck, - Chris Disclaimer - I have nothing I want to sell you - only my free advice
  4. Steve, I have an '08 Trophy 2152 walkaround with an extended hard-top. It has a 4.3L Merc I/O (190 HP) and is the best boat I've ever owned. Some of this may be b/c I bought it new and it's too early to see the faults, but my previous boats have been an '01 Sportcraft 23' Fishmaster and an '85 Bayliner. I have never had any trailer issues with the Karavan trailers like Yodamage had/has. I often look at these posts "with a grain of salt" b/c people who have had the worst experiences typically post a comment as do those with the absolute best experiences. However, here's some of my objective feedback which might help you: Pros: - great fishing boat, yet it can be adapted for family activities like water-skiing, tubing, or cruising - Great gunwale access for mounting rod-holders, riggers, etc. - Get the I/O - it gives you more room and much better "fish-ability" on your transom for landing fish compared with an outboard - The walkaround is one of my favorite features. It provides storage for dock poles, fenders, and my landing nets. It also is a nice access point for cleaning the boat, docking, etc. - Handles rough seas with no problem - Good expandability for electronics, auto-pilot, GPS, FF, etc. - Multiple hard-top options - Good dealer network of parts - very simple boat to maintain, clean Cons: - Very little "cabinet" style storage space - Local Rochester dealer support is located in Churchville (i.e. not on the water) - Walk-around cuts down on cockpit area space You are welcome to test drive my boat or fish with me at any time and give it a try for yourself. I only trailer my boat twice per year and leave it in the water the entire summer. P.S. - I've been in 4-6 ft. seas 10 miles out, I've fished in hail, I've been caught in downpours in this boat and I've always had the confidence in the boat no matter what. Good luck, - Chris Disclaimer - I have no financial or personal ties to Bayliner, Trophy Fishing, or Karavan trailers
  5. Fishing Report Chris Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9/12/09 Time on Water:4-7:30 PM Weather/Temp:60's Wind Speed/Direction: NE 5-10 mph Waves: 1-2 ft. rollers Surface Temp: mid 60's Location: West of Genny to east of I-Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 1 Total Boated:1 Species Breakdown: steelhead Hot Lure: DW SS Gator Trolling Speed: 2.6 mph Down Speed: 2.2 mph Boat Depth: 80-250 fow Lure Depth: 71' rigger ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS We planned on going out this morning, but the rough water kept us in until the afternoon. Started in 80 fow, very cold water, very little marks, so I headed north. At the 200' area just west of the river, I started seeing lots, and I mean lots of bait about 20-30' down. There was also a ton of seagulls out there as well. Had only one hit, but it was good to see marks and bait. Down temp. "warmed up" to 49 degrees down 55'. Wound up trolling east zig-zagging between 200 and 250', with scattered marks and bait pods between 20 and 50 fow. Lots of marks on the bottom over 200 fow - I presume they're kings. The fish was a nice steelhead, about 10# or so, but it had very little fight in it. We'll be at it one more time, then pull the boat and head off to the woods..... Good luck to all, - Chris ====================
  6. John, You can't catch fish on your sofa - get out there tomorrow and fish. Listen to Yankee and head out deep. We'll be out tomorrow morning (with Coleman actually) and I'm heading right out to 225' and will head on a NW troll until we hit 400 fow. I've said this 100 times, last year we fished offshore in August/Sept. and filled our cooler almost each time out. The fish are smaller, but they're better for catch-and-release and you can tie into some schools of steelhead and coho. Good luck, - Chris
  7. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you, I agree with the boys above, if I could give you a few words of advice it would be - Find the fish first. Look for temperature structure (vertical breaks in the Spring, horizontal thermocline in the summer), bait pods, even structure changes on the bottom. No matter what you do or how hard you try, if there ain't any fish, you're not going to catch anything. Once you find fish, adjust your speed and direction of your troll putting out your best "go-to" lures first. If you don't get any hits, then change your lures. I rarely change my lures until I'm absolutely sure that it's not my speed, troll direction, or depth first. Here's some other pointers: 1.) You're way too fast for salmon at a downspeed of 2.8 mph. I'm usually around 2.0-2.5 mph unless I'm interested in steelhead, then I speed up. My guess is your spoons might be spinning at that speed instead of looking like a wounded baitfish. 2.) Use free slider cheaters on your riggers - they caught the majority of our fish this year on the riggers, including our biggest salmon 3.) Find a good down temp. 42-48 degrees, then move up 4.) Fish your screen - if fish are at 50' down in 68 degree water, put something on top of them. who cares that it's 68 degree water, if there's fish there, then they're hungry and looking for a meal b/c they ain't there to enjoy the sunshine and get cooked. 5.) Use green, green and more green spoons, but throw something high up in orange, red or yellow 6.) Use your wire Dipsy's - read the posts for good starting points on depths. Fish 'em with Spinny'Fly combos typically 20-24" leads between the end of the flasher and the start of the fly, and typically flashers in white and/or green 7.) Keep it simple and have fun. We've all had our days and I've learned more from all of these guys this year alone than I could ever learn from any books or DVD's. Good luck! - Chris
  8. Anthony, Thanks again for a great time yesterday!!! To all fellow LOU fishermen/women, I have to say, Anthony (Pike Hunter) is a great fisherman with a great rig. Thanks to you and Barry for a great time!!! Yes, we should have stayed in close...if I'm not mistaken, Anthony wanted to stay in close, but I persuaded him to head north.........yikes!!! Thanks again for a great day on the water, - Chris
  9. Dave, Instead of giving you random advice - give us more specifics on how you set up, speed, direction of your troll, depths, etc. Than I can give you some help which may be a bit more applicable - Chris
  10. Fishing Report Chris Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9/3/09 Time on Water: 3-5:30 PM Weather/Temp: 70's, not a cloud in the sky Wind Speed/Direction: calm Waves: calm Surface Temp: 73.5 Location: north of I-Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): 32-33 W lines =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated:2 Species Breakdown: 1 coho, 1 small king Hot Lure: Green Dot Spinny/Hammer fly on wire, DW SS Gator, DW SS 42 second Trolling Speed: 2.5 sog Down Speed: 2.2-2.4 mph Boat Depth: 220-400 fow Lure Depth: riggers 110' with slider, wire Dipsy 240' out, #3 setting ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Fishing solo for only a few hours and I wanted quantity over quality since I couldn't enter a LOC fish. Lots, and I mean lots, of bait pods between 220 and 400 fow. Some marks, all hits were around the bait. One fish on the deep 42 second spoon on my 110' rigger, the other on a DW SS Gator free slider. The coho hit the wire diver. Not much to report other than there's fish in there out deep if you want to stay away from the pack in tight. Lost the third fish behind my boat when I had trouble with the net b/c of tendinitis in my wrist. It was nearly impossible with my new net - a 6' Beckman. Nonetheless, there was a decent amount of boats around the river and Braddocks, it seemed like they were fishing the 100-160' area. Hope to be back at it on Monday morning..... Good luck, - Chris
  11. Anthony - nice fish bud!!!! We hope to get out on Monday AM.....can't wait..... BTW, our steelhead is dropping like a sinker on the LOC.... Later, Chris
  12. Great job - just curious, do you have a pic of the coho? Thanks, - Chris
  13. Fish-hawk, Last year while guys were battling the blow boats and each other around the mouth of the Genny, we headed off-shore most days and nights and the steelhead fishing was the best of the season. Good luck, - Chris
  14. Wow, what a pig!!! That's a fish of a lifetime. Anytime it takes two people to hold up one fish - you know it's really something! Thanks for sharing, - Chris
  15. Fishing Report Chris Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8/28/09 Time on Water: 5:15 AM - 8:30 AM Weather/Temp: 60'2, cloudy, some light rain Wind Speed/Direction: E 10-15 mph Waves: 2-3' rollers Surface Temp: low 70's Location: I-Bay north LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): 28-33 W lines =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated:2 Species Breakdown: 1 juvenile king, 1 steelhead Hot Lure: DW SS Dirty White Boy, DW SS Steelie Dan Trolling Speed: 2.5-2.9 sog Down Speed: 2.2-2.4 mph Boat Depth: 160-220 fow Lure Depth: riggers 100', 77' both with free sliders ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== First and foremost, I had an opportunity to meet and fish with Anthony (Pike Hunter) this morning and we had a blast. He is a true gentlemen and a great fisherman and I look forward to fishing with him many more times! Although the fishing was slow and the waves plentiful, we still managed three fish (I'm sure we would have had a few more, but we motored in around 8:30AM to weigh our steelhead). We set up in the dark just east of the bay and the screen was completely blank in 120', so we headed west of the channel and started in 160 fow with a decent screen with lots of marks between 60-70' down. First hit on our port rigger (likely on a slider) was about an hour after sunrise, looked like a medium size steelie which we lost about 40' from the boat. It actually floated for a while afterward... Our next hit was a king on our deepest rigger 100', on a free slider DW SS Steelie Dan (it's about the 6th or7th time this year we've had a king on this slider set-up). Our final fish was a 12#8 ounce Steelhead which currently sits in 14th place on the LOC. Anthony did a supurb job getting the fish in and we motored in shortly thereafter to get it weighed. I wished we could of stayed out longer to get a few more. All in all, it was a great morning, and a great treat to put a fish in the LOC standings.... Thanks again Anthony and good luck to all!!! - Chris
  16. Fished with Anthony (Pike Hunter) this morning - we caught a 12#8 ounce steelhead (looks like it'll be 13 place of so). Nonetheless, it was great to get a fish on the board and get a steelhead up there from the I-Bay area. I think Anthony will post a pic of the fish later on..... Location - east of I-bay, 220 fow Set-up - rigger at 77' and the fish was caught on a free slider, DW SS Dirty White Boy, 2.2 mph at the ball. Thanks fellas and especially thanks to Anthony for his great work on getting the fish in the boat and for being a great guest on my boat!!!!! - Chris
  17. Take a look at this site for fish ID - I think the link has been postd here before: http://www.wiscfish.org/fishid/frames.aspx Good luck - nice job on your first king!! - Chris
  18. Rob, The lake looks nasty enough - let alone the waterspout..... If I was looking at the same sky you were on my boat, there would be a water-spout in my pants...... Fantastic pics - you should send 'em to the news - I'm sure Glen Johnson would get a kick out of those! Thanks for sharing... - Chris
  19. Jr, Great report - glad to hear you nailed 'em. We've lost two fish this year b/c of split ring problems. One was a lost treble hook, the other from the ring slipping off the end of the spoon (I originally thought the ring broke, but it likely just slipped off) Since this experience, we always "double check" our spoons before they hit the water and we noticed a few weeks ago another treble hook was starting to slip between the rings much like when you take your car-keys off a ring. I don't know how this happens but I it makes us look at the spoons a little closer (we also had a defective VMC treble hook which was brand wwhere one of the hooks was actually slightly broken in the middle). Good luck, - Chris
  20. That's funny - mine are also very similar: White with green dot Spinny/A-Tom-Mik Hammer fly Dark green Spinny with dark green tape/Sigg's green crinkle or Howie Glitter Jade fly - Chris
  21. Wow Ray - crazy stuff..... Hey - check out Chatham if you have time......it's me and my wife's favorite place on the Cape.... Have fun! - Chris
  22. Thanks gentlemen - I appreciate your great advice and extremely quick feedback. I'm going to try and work on something to avoid the blowback and loosen my tape on the swivel so it can pivot a little better. Thanks again guys!!!! Good luck on the water, - Chris
  23. Hello fellow fishermen/women, I've noticed over the past few years that the down speed on my Subtroll seems to be affected when I have a rod set on the same rigger as the probe. I run Black's releases with the 4-5" terminal kit supplied with the probe and my line goes to the release which is between the probe and my ball. When I have a line attached to the release and the rod is engaged, the probe reads about 0.1-0.3 mph slower than when the probe is "free" and there's no line attached. Certainly there's more blow back with the line attached, but why would this affect "down speed"? Does anyone have any idea why this occurs? Maybe the probe is less accurate with a line engaged and maybe it's being "lifted upward" slightly at an angle whichs affects the speed wheel..... Thanks very much for any insight people may have, - Chris
  24. Fishing Report Chris / Yellow Trophy: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 8/21 and 8/22 Time on Water: 8/21 - 4 PM til 8PM; 8/22 5:15 AM til 9 AM Weather/Temp: mainly sunny both days Wind Speed/Direction: Sw 5-10 mph both days Waves: 8/21 <1ft; 8/22 1-2 ft. out deep Surface Temp: 75 deg. Location: north I-Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): 29-32 W lines =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: around 20 Total Boated: around 15 or 16 Species Breakdown: all kings except one steelhead Hot Lure: NBK, 42 second NK, green dot spinny/hammer fly, glow frog DW SS, dirty white boy DW SS Trolling Speed: 2.4-3.1 sog Down Speed: best speed 2.4 mph at the ball Boat Depth: hottest depth both days 160-240 fow Lure Depth: rigger 85', rigger 115', both with free sliders, wire Dipsy's 240-310' out #3 setting ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Great fishing both days - lots of fish, many big guys. We landed a 25#-er this morning and two 22#-er's yesterday. Threw the 25#-er back, even though we're all registered in the LOC. Otherwise, everything continues to fire other than our 10-color core. Riggers were better this morning, but the wire Dipsy continues to produce the biggest fish. No bites on the Kelly Green spinny/crinkle green fly, but we caught 8 or 9 over the two days on the green dot spinny/Hammer fly #3 setting, out 240-310'. We had to replace the Hammer fly b/c it got destroyed after today. We stayed east of the Bay and it seemed to hold a lot of fish and bait, especially in the 160-180 fow area. Free sliders on the riggers (Dirty White Boy, Glow frog) also worked well, both on riggers 85' and 115' down. The deep baits on the riggers (42 second, NBK) also caught fish including the steelhead down 115'. We did not get any bites on our red/orange steelhead lures...... Fish seem to like it a little faster lately - around 2.4 and 2.5 mph at the ball.... Good luck to all in the LOC....hopefully we'll see a 40 #er this year! - Chris
