I don't have an explanation except that in another forum, there was a string of posts similiar to this back in 2006 and here's a summary: Officials say a disease might be killing an invasive species of fish in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The GLRC’s David Sommerstein reports. Where the lake and the river meet, people have been finding dead round gobies. “Dozens in some cases, hundreds of dead gobies that have been washing up on shores.†Steve Litwiler is with New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation. He says a change in water temperature or a poison could cause the die-off, but initial sampling suggests some kind of disease. “Is it a disease that could potentially affect other fish? Fortunately right now the only fish that are dying appear to be the round gobies.†If only the round gobies die, this could be a good news story. Round gobies hitched a ride from Europe in the ballast of foreign freighters. They’ve displaced native species across the Great Lakes Also, just fyi according to the NYSDEC website: What to do if you find sick/dead fishIf you witness a large number of dead or dying fish (usually 100 or more), please contact the nearest DEC regional office and ask for the Bureau of Fisheries. The public is also advised to regularly check the Department website for updated information on VHS in New York State.

Helllo everyone, Just wanted to give you all a heads up that our tackle shop will be open limited hours during the Orleans County Pro-Am weekend, June 7-9, 2013. We have to attend a family event in St. Louis, Missouri the same week-end as the Pro-Am. So, the shop will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. Sorry for the inconvenience but hopefully, if you need something, you can plan ahead, or at least you'll be off the water by then and can get to the shop before it closes. YNN is coming to Point Breeze tomorrow Tuesday, April 30 to do an on camera interview. Keep your fingers crossed, right now we are still in 3rd place: Cape Hatteras 11,998, Grand Lake CO 10,042, and Point Breeze with 9,511. Mike Waterhouse, our county's sportsfishing coordinator will be meeting the YNN reporter, Rose, here at that time and I'm sure they'll travel up to the Point and shoot some video. I don't know if she'll want to talk with any Charter Captains but she will be at Captain's Cove at 11:30 am so if you're interested feel free to come "hang out"!

While not recent news, I just learned about this from Make the Turn and then I spoke with Mike, a NYS DEC biologist. So, I thought I would share the information. Lake trout and salmon that feed primarily on alewife can experience reproductive failure due to a vitamin B deficiency. Predators that feed on native species like bloater are less likely to experience reproductive failure...Re-establishing deepwater ciscoes in the lake will reduce opportunities for new invasive species to colonize the offshore, deepwater zone and fill the niche that bloaters are most suited to fill."
