  1. Nice fish guys! My goal this year is to catch my first eye. They didn't have any in CA and the few times I fished for them after movin' here in August I came up empty. I'll probably try Honeoye on the opener. Look for me on my blue kayak, hopefully getting towed by a big ass walleye! Phil
  2. Great pics Stan. I used to live in the Bay Area and we went to Siskiyou every summer. My folks are there right now. I love that lake! I am more of a bass fisherman and I would catch up to 50 smallmouths a day. I love the view of Mt. Shasta. It's been a few years since I've been. Great readin about Siskiyou out here in NY Phil
  3. Bring it on. I am very interested in ice fishing. I guess I need to buy some tip-ups. And some winter clothes for that matter... If anyone is looking for an ice fishing intern, I'm your guy! I have fished black creek a few times and all the times I was going out guys were coming in with walleye in there boat they say they get theme right at the mouth. they said on rapalas that look like crabs and jigs sometimes also
  4. Kinda late, but I feel like sharin. Hit up Black creek in my kayak for the first time. What a beautiful waterway. I got a lot of funny looks, so I will show a picture of my setup. I originally used my kayak fishin in the ocean in California... It was perfect for the water in Black creek. The fishin was good. I caught 2 nice bass pretty quick. The first one weighed 2.6 lbs at 17 inches and I forgot to weigh the second. It looked about the same. Those were a lot of fun. It slowed down a little bit before I got this guy... Not huge, but my biggest so far... He hit 2 inches from my kayak. A little later fishin in a sunken tree, I snag a branch and slowly bring it up. Wrong! It ends up being this beast... Tottaly shocked and scared of his big ass claws, I watched it quickly unsnap my swivel. My first reptile... Had a great time hangin out on Black creek. I might go again this weekend. Til next time, PHIL
  5. Ok I finally bought a car. A gelopi for $500, but it runs. I planned on fishin this morning. Woke up at 5 mpoured a bowl of cereal look out the window and it's pouring! Went back to bed... It cleared up around two so I decided to go to Irodequoit Bay for a little PM session. I set out in search of bass, pike, and walleye. Launched along the south-west side of the bay and headed north. I worked these shallows lookin for pike and bass, but nothin hit my lures. Smelled something that reminded me of the breakwall in Marina Del Rey and looked to see a ****load of commorants in these trees. They even stained the trees. Found some deeper water and worked the dropoffs for walleye or smallmouths. No good. Much of the shorline has beautiful houses with docks. I decided to work some of these. To my suprise the water dropped off really quick around the docks. I worked this area and caught many panfish, but nothing that I was looking for. Then, I hook something that feels like a bluegill for a few seconds then takes off! I thought it was either a bass or walleye. After a few exciting minutes I bring up this sheephead. I noticed a lot of bait in the water. Saw a few boils, but nothin hit my lures. I need to get some lights so I can fish at night. Paddled and fished a lot more working all different kinds of waters but only caught a few more bluegill and white perch. Made it back just before dark but perfect time for some big ass mosquitoes to get me. Kinda weird putting my yak on top of a car, but no more truck... Goin fishin at Black Creek on Sunday with the only other kayak fisherman that I know around. Will let you know if I catch anything. Til next time, Phil _________________
  6. Thanks for the tip Gator. If I give it a shot I'll let you know how I did.
  7. Right on. Way to make lemonade. It's funny how life works.
  8. No, it wasn't me, but I sure am jealous. How far offshore are the fish? I am used to paddling a few miles offshore in the ocean. If they are within five miles, I can get them. I need the exercise. I guess I would need some lead core line though... Getting a sleigh ride from a salmon sure sounds fun! Til next time, Phil
  9. Rode my bike to the Erie Canal. I learned why Highland Ave. is named Highland Ave. along the way. Beautiful sight this canal. My first fish was a small largemouth. He hit my spinnerbait right at my feet. It sure was great feeling somethin pull on my line again. Went a little bit up East and hooked this guy. That was exciting. Not big, but as a kid growin up in CA I used to always dream of catching a pike. Never had the chance until now. I walked up to where the river meets the canal. Looked like some good fishin in there, but it was impossible to fish with all the foliage. I found one spot and a fish hit my lure at my feet again but didn't set. It ended being my last bite of the day. Went back to the canal and worked it east and tried every spot along the way hoping to hook a walleye. Next time I go I will bring some live bait. It was a lot of fun and I am thankful for the advice from everyone on this site. Til next time, Phil [/url]
  10. Wow thanks for the advice. I think I'll start with the canal by the golf course I'll go Wednesday and see if I can get lucky on my birthday. Probably cath and release. I don't think the buss would like a stringer full of fish  I always release bass anyway. Til next time, Phil
  11. Without a way to transport my kayak, it looks like I will be doing some shore fishing to get my fix. I live just East of downtown Rochester and will ride my bike or take the bus to any good fishing spots not too far away. I would like to target warm-water species, bass, pike, walleye... I bought the Sander's Guide and it says the New York State Barge canal is a good place to fish. Has anyone been there recently? Where is a good place to start? The Genesee river sounds like a good fishery as well. Where is a good place to fish there? Does I-Bay have good shore fishing? I'm not looking to invade your honey-hole. I just wanna wet a line in a productive area. Thank you in advance for pointing me in the right direction. Until next time, Phil
  12. Well I gave it a go this mornin. The pond is extremely shallow. The first 10-30 yards from the shore are choked with weeds. I hit it with floating frogs, senkos, spinnerbait, topwater, and crappie jigs with no luck. I'm guessing the fish in there are in the center by the fountains where I assume it's deeper. I did not see any boils or anything. If you like carp fishing, the lake is full of them. It felt great to be casting a line out finally. Beautiful morning, just no fish. til next time, Phil
  13. Wow that's exciting. I'm buying my fishin licence tommorow and will probobly fish sunday mornin. I'll be sure to let you all know if there are fish there. Phil
  14. I don't know how big your boat is but if it is not a huge boat, I would reccomend the Humminbird 343. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st ... sNum=10879 I have the 383 gps combo and it is a ****in unit. I used to work (still am emplyed) at West Marine and I have played with a whole lot of units and that was my favorite for the price. I also reccomend to save a little and get the 383 with GPS because it is so usufull for just a little more dough. Let me know if you have any questions, Phil'> I have the 383 gps combo and it is a ****in unit. 15. Thanks Guys. I sure can't wait to tell you how my first trip goes.
  16. Thanks Fish Junkie. I just ordered a copy. There is a resivoir above Lake Riley that is used for water storage. It didn't look like they allowed fishing in it. Is this fishable? Phil
  17. I know it's pathetic, but until my car arrives, it is the only place I can get to with my bike. Its been weeks since I wet a line and I'm going to go nuts! Are there any bass, pickeral, or pike in Lake Riley? I walked around it and saw hundreds of small sunfish and a big ass carp. I'm thinkin past the weeds might be some decent fishing. Would I be wasting my time? Phil
  18. What are fleas? I'm from CA and never heard of them before. Kinda Curious.
  19. Note: Original post was walleye in Seneca, but I actually meant Conesus. I got them mixed up... Well I just moved here from California and took a drive to see Conesus Lake. Boy is it beautiful! I can't wait to get on my kayak out there. I am looking forward to fishing for bass and pike, but would also like to catch my first walleye. Are there any walleye in seneca? Would I be wasting my time fishin for them there? :? If there are any walleye there I will be searching for some deep structure with my sonar and working it. Is this a good approach? Any other tips? Where are some good walleye spots to fish close to Rochester? I here the Gennessee river is good, but I think fishing on a river with a kayak could get tiring. :? I just ordered some worm spinners and pike lures to add to my bass-lure-filled tackle-box. I need to go to a tackle shop and get my license and some crankbaits. It will probably be a week before my car arrives from CA. I am getting very antsy... Are there any kayak fisherman out there? Take it easy! Phil
  20. I doubt there are many fisherman at my school. I will be attending the Eastman School of Music. Most musicians don't like to fish. Does the Genny have a lot of current? I would think it would be tough to kayak fish in a river. I-Bay looks like a good place to start. I think I'll check that out next weekend. Thanks for the help, Phil
