As far as leader length is concerned, it should be longer (I prefer longer)  or shorter than the rod. You do not want the swivel/knot to be on or near the guides of your rod  when you bring the fish to the net

I would use small ball bearing swivels.

If you use fluorocarbon,you should keep in mind that it has no stretch at all and you should set your slip accordingly

I have a Islander 191 and am looking for a kicker but don't have a 4 stroke budget for this season, what size are you running and how'd you mount it?

I have a full deck teak (I think) on the rear and will have to sacrifice a part of it and was thinking of mounting a tank to it to the kicker. 

I'm still reading alot and I'm not sure if I need a long shaft or not but I guess it depends on the mount....

I have a 9.9 long shaft. It,s plenty for an Islander

You can go with the B60 which is the same as a P66 but going through hull and tilted  or  with 2 ducers,one a 50 KHz and the other a 200.

Would you mind explaining exactly why you make such a point out of this?

It sounds like  there might be a story that you may want to share

If your mast is deep enough inside or around the base you should not need it. About running only one board,not a good idea it will pull your boat towards the planer board side a lot stronger than you would expect.

The best places to catch fish is on the "edges" and these edges are not always on the bottom. It is where under water currents meet and speed and temperature change all the time. A TD will never tell you where that happens, an X4 always will.

I am about to install an Airmar P66 on my stern. My concern is the Fish Hawk  X4 transducer. Do the P66 (50-200 (KHZ) and the fish hawk transducer (70KHZ) when placed very close (6 inches apart) interfere with each other ?

Or are the frequencies so different that there is no interference?

The setup in my Islander is simular. It is an I/O with a 2 stroke kicker and the 6 gallon 2 stroke fuel tank is a royal pain in the neck. Currently I am considering building a bracket in the center on top of the stern or on the outside of the stern above the I/O. That way,at least while fishing,the tank is out of the way.

Please let me know considerations for or against.

If you get a 4 stroke kicker,then by all means hook it into your main tank,possibly right of the fuel /water separator, although sometimes there is a problem that the connection between the 2 engines causes the running engine to suck air through the fuel line from the other engine. I had that problem when using 2 outboards. the problem was solved by using a 3 way valve. This enabled me to completely separate the fuel flow.

A few years ago,I took a boating safety course with my son. The teacher told us that the use of these big search lights on boats is illegal in NY state.

I am not sure whether or not he was right,but it's worth checking out before you invest.

The higher the better. (within reason +/- 6foot.) The height of your mast decides on the downward angle of your planer board line. This, together with the pulling strength of your board will make the fishing line go out to the board faster or slower. It is also helps in keeping heavy lines above the water

When I bought my Islander last year it was called "Salmon Slammer".  My fishing is more about relaxing and enjoying than slammin', so I unnamed the boat for one season the remove a possible renaming curse.

19 foot Islanders are sort of clumsy so I considered "Bumbler" and similar names ,but nothing really sounded right. Then about a week ago I talked to my daughter and told her how much I want to take her first born,my first grandson, out fishing. Upon which she answered :"Now there is food for story telling". That was it. Right then and there I decided that my boat's name will be "Tale  Spinner".

If you want to put on a second set,you have to order them from Big Jon. I got mine last summer for roughly $110 including shipping.

Big Jon are the only people who sell the keels that have a half weight. This is very important because 2 full weight keels will make the otter boat sink when going slow In turns or when the line breaks.

The only people selling the half weights are Big Jon at their central store. With 2 boards you can run 2 coppers on each side.

There are a lot of ways to do it.

I had a lot of small holes of various fish finders and such. Enough to cause some leakage and transom rot.(this was at the bottom end of the transom)

My solution was  buying a piece of aluminum 3/4 thick by 6 by by 12 and putting lots of m5000 goop on one side and next covering all the holes with this one piece of aluminum and bolting it onto the transom.

All the holes were covered and gone and on top of that,instead of drilling new holes into the transom, I now screw stuff into the aluminum.

I had a happy troller on my 18 foot sylvan with 75 horse merc and hated it.It shortened my trolling time because of increased fuel usage (I had a 20 gallon fuel tank). I started using a 9.5 kicker instead and fuel expenses went way down per trip and on top of that, the extra engine gives increased safety.

If you intend to strip and repaint the bottom. You may want your first layer to be "gluvit" which is a sealant that will penetrate into the seams and around the rivets. It will stop any small leakage.

Probably a $60 8 to 10 foot antenna will be the ticket.

The placement of the antenna is important because outgoing broadcast may interfere with the electronics on your rig

Between a good antenna (very important) and for example a Uniden you should be below the $200. Don't skimp on the antenna.

If you get a VHF radio,you should hook it into your GPS and get an MMSI number. If you (god forbid) get in trouble on the water all you have to do is push the distress button on your radio and it will send out a mayday on all frequencies + your exact location. On top of that it will broadcast your MMSI # . With the info you gave when you signed up it will contact your home phone and get in touch with the family.

What year is it? Looks exactly like my 2011 targa v18 wt and I have no issues. just put a block of wood between motor and transom.

That is a good idea,but only if you intend to leave the kicker in the "down" position all the time.

A better idea would be to remove the cover board and insert a 1/2 to 3/4 inch aluminum board on the inside in order to give the transom some extra support where the kicker will be hanging. (not so much for "water" time,but for "transport" time. If you leave the board out,you will be able to keep the kicker raised (flipped over forward) when not in use. just make sure that you have a good bilge pump in case of waves coming up from behind rolling into the transom. Anyway,those rigs are supposed to be unsinkable.

I just took the big step and bought a Sitex SVS 650 with an Airmar P66 triducer at a cost of $625. It is supposed to be as good as a Furuno 627 but with a bigger screen (like a furuno 582). I will let you guys know if at $230 dollars less than the 627 it really is that good.
