Maybe there was a chemical spill there

i don't have a biomedical background, but i think i would have let that deer pass on by (i shoot only what i know i'll eat).
It is likely perfectly safe to eat but nonetheless, i doubt i would have shot that freak! (i prefer my deer with 4 legs)
dre
Why?
Six legs is more meat than four, besides, this would be really fast food.

rolmops.....very interesting. Do U or anyone else have any further info, as far as real studies or news on the cuke-herbicide-safe to consume-fishing-Israeli thing is concerned? Could and will spend a little time online to find some, but a lead or two would b nice....Sk8man....U R right absolutely; but this has already opened up neat (2 me) things to ponder and maybe be aware of .... I lived near the Sea of Galilee from 1985 until 1997 and every so often we read reports in the papers about a few fisher men being arrested for using this obviously illegal harvesting method. The quantities of herbicide were very small, but they had a devastating effect on the native tilapia locally known as St.Peters Fish. Although it was known where the fish was sold, there never were more than residual markers found which were well below any level which would make it dangerous for human consumption. As far as I know nobody ever got punished beyond paying fines.
Here is part of an article written about this form of poaching.
Despite its reduction in fingerlings, the government places much of the blame on the fishermen. Anjioni said that many of them use nets with smaller holes than are permitted by law, while the size of the nets themselves exceed legal limits. This results in huge hauls of very young fish that are below the legal size limit and have not had a chance to breed. Anjioni also pointed out that there are several cases each year of fishermen releasing a poison called Tionex, which either stuns the fish or kills them. Meanwhile, the toxin temporarily contaminates the water, resulting in mass kills of fish too young to be legally caught.

Endosulfan is the generic name of tionex. Molecular Formula: C9H6Cl6O3S Molecular Weight: 406.92514
I have to make a correction. tionex is an insectide not a herbicide.

I guess BEFORE we get too far afield here it might be good to know whether there actually was a fish kill....:>) Maybe we're getting too desperate for stuff to talk about now that the fishing has "wound down" on the lakes for many of us :>)
Yes, I do agree.

Looking at this from a very different angle, there might be more to this rumor than meets the eye.
Some herbicides have spectacular results on fish. Specially a herbicide that is used when growing cucumbers. The cukes are perfectly fine for human consumption after application. However, when this herbicide is spread in the water,it causes a big fish kill. Again, the killed fish is perfectly fine for human consumption. Illegal "fishing" with this chemical is a real problem in Israel in the sea of Galilee. The killed fish makes its way to the fish market in Tiberias. Maybe somebody around here picked up on this trick.

Weed killer is not used very often in the end of November.

With hardly any water in the tributaries and some bays effectively landlocked, what will this do to the natural reproduction of our target fish and its bait and how will it effect the fishing two and three years from now?
-
It may be a good idea to have every rigger weight in the same shape and weight. They will all react the same way to whatever currents and speeds they encounter. This will increase the probability for the relative distance between the weights to stay the same. Different shapes will have different reactions thereby increasing the chance of tangles.

What worked really well?
On lake Ontario: Just horsin' around!! I had the time of my life with Lou and his sons and Paul is a blast to be with!!
For breakfast on board: Dibella's multigrain roastbeef, swiss cheese with onions lettuce ,tomatoes, honey mustard, cucumber with salt and Oregano.

Yes BlueEye... a question from a relative electronics and computer dinosaur.... whatever could a hacker from anywhere hope to find trolling around and stealing (is that the key word?) at this forum...? Does it happen sort of accidentally, say, collateral damage due too heavy handed techniques (or idiocy)? Maybe gathering data for some other kind of bigger attack somewhere in the future? Sale of info? Maybe something that is trying to be learned? I mean, what would be their motivations. Just fishing for any info that might lead to .......what?? "Tech" savvy types feel free to chime in, but only if U can translate in plain English for us poor ignorant and susceptible underlings.....
All of a sudden spam pops up as messages. Any stored info such as e-mail addresses or credit card info (professionals) may be compromised. Easy sites that make no noise when hacked are used as training ground before going on to bigger and better things.

Hint: 8=H
Sort of like the Rush Limbaugh show, the answer is provided with the question so everybody can feel smart

Nniiiicee!! That seems to be an unusual mix of fish. The pike of 13# is really good anywhere, and that whitefish really gets my attention. I thought they were a deepwater fish. Maybe I am not aware of the bottom contours of that area. Were they indeed, all caught at different depths...with different presentations (lures, bait terminal tackle, etc.)? Anyway, WTG !
there is no temperature difference in the lake so all the fish are where the bait is
-
Hm,I always thought that a combination of different lines and depth set up a balanced overall presentation, which is attractive because it is balanced.
What I read here is very different. where does balanced overall presentation stop and singular presentation start?

That is what they look and act like in my back yard in Brighton.

This will be more than a slap on the hand.
Now their finger prints and DNA are on file and they are on "the usual suspect list". If they are not properly punished,at least they are neutralized.

I may be far off the mark here, but here goes anyway.
We know how to attract and net the lamprey while they come up the creeks and we know how to kill them. Would leaving big bags of dead lamprey in the creeks possibly do the exact same thing that this research suggests?
On another note. I am not at all sure that I want the lamprey to ignore the creeks that they are known to spawn in. It would just make them look elsewhere. I would much rather attract them to certain streams and catch them. Then destroy them by removing them from the water, while all the time attracting them to the same streams.
But no matter what way is used. In order to see the results, it will take anywhere between four and six years because of their life cycle.
What to do with the dead lampreys? They are great fertilizer for organic gardens. All the guts and bones of the fish that I catch are buried in my garden and ever since I started doing this, the size of my pumpkins has doubled! I would just be a little bit wary of the night crawlers...

+1
It's the same with fishing gear and don't let me start on their competitors price matching policy which only works if you know how to jump backwards through burning hoops.

Dis the Bush administration initiate the gasoline/ethenol effort?
This ethanol fuel thing was much promoted by the Bush administration, but it really is the thing of the mid western corn producing states and the political power of the farmers lobby also known as the corn lobby.
Republican or democrat,it does not matter. The farmers lobby has us all by the b@lls.

Good salt water reels are called PENN. All my Penns are used every year on the Cape and Stellwagen Bank. My oldest one is from 1984 and she still works like new!

All righ-teee - more defense spending...that'll help the economy.
The actual reason for less water in our area is the population explosion just west of Toronto to Niagara falls. All those extra people add a lot of weight to that end of the lake and the lake is tipping that way.

Maybe, but I think that it is all the fault of those Quebeckistanies.

The truth to the lower water levels is that Obama has been selling it to the Russians. Several Russian subs were sighted this summer just off False Duck Island. They fill up with our fresh water and take it to Cuba. That was what Obama was saying to the Russians this summer when he thought he had a closed mic and said he would have more leeway when he was reelected. It is all part of his plan to socialize the US.
Yea right, and he did it with the help of those evil communist socialist Canadians. It's time to bomb Toronto!!

It may or may not be that bad. One thing is certain. It will bring in a lot of sand and other crap and the channels will be clogged up. We had better start calling for dredging them channels.
-
That is the very reason why specially wild pig/boar is very risky to eat.

Before you rip into the engine, check out if the prop has spun. Draw a straight line on the prop and the rubber center, run the engine in the lake and after it surges, pull it out to see if the line is still straight. If it is in a different place on one of the parts, your prop has spun. If so, replace it.

That may be so,but if Tom wins the lottery he will probably rig up a remote control fuel barge just because he can.
