    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

We went fishing the first leg of the A-Tom-Mik triple crown out of the little Salmon River and after setting up in 135 feet of water we made numerous runs back and forth in front of the the power plant. This resulted in a 27 inch Atlantic. It gave a great fight and show, but we could not use it for this tournament. Next were a few skippies and some steelies. Then came a 28 pound +king which took about half an hour to reel in. Shortly afterwards we had a cluster something with 2 leadcore lines involved, while at the same time we had a double hookup with 2 kings. One on a 30 pound line, the other on a 10 pound line. The fist to come in after 20 minutes got himself onto the dipsy wire and somehow this opened the swivel and right behind the boat it got off. The other on the 10 pound line was brought in patiently and with great skill. It was netted and tipped the scales at 22 pounds. A few skippies later, the leadcore went screaming out of the reel and we were convinced that this would be another king, but it turned out to be a 15 pound plus brown we netted. This one is currently 4th on the LOC board. There was another steely and it was time to come in and go to Oswego for the weigh in.

I would like to thank Tom for a very well organized, very pleasant and friendly tournament. It was really nice to be at the weigh in and festivities surrounding this event, great food too.

    Keep em coming Tom!

  2. Allright, thanks!

I will contact DEC to find out about that situation. I mean, I don't want to trespass someone's else property. Unless if they approved it, then I will fishing there.

Monster Carp is sound like my personal quest right now. Since I never caught carp over 15 pounds before.

If it is monster carp that you seek, the place to go is the entrance of Irondeqoit bay in the evenings. The carp are spawning and they come in from the lake to spawn in the shallows of Mayers marina.I have caught quite a few there on a night crawler.

You can catch veritable monsters over there and pound for pound they fight harder than a striper.

  3. Dumb question, sorry. When you start getting into the high-end fish finders, is it normal to want a separate chart plotter for gps, waypoints, etc...? I looked these models up and considering the prices, was surprised to see that they don't include a transducer and they need to be connected to a separate plotter.

When you get into this expensive stuff you will find that, specially transducers come in many levels of sensitivity. Some transducers are great for bottom view at 1500 feet down and others are really good at 15 feet. Sensitivity of the transducers is probably the most important quality in a fish finder. Having a fish finder and a gps on the same screen is a matter of preference.

I just need to keep on reminding myself that a fish finder does not catch fish,it just helps a bit .

  4. I am in the process of choosing which fish finder to install on my new to me Islander and after having seen on the Spoonfed what the Furuno 582 is capable of there seem to be only 2 choices.Either Furuno or Sitex. My choices are narrowed down to the Furuno 610/620 or the Sitex SVS 650. There's plenty of people on this board with the Furuno 610/620 ,but the Sitex SVS 650 claims to have the same specs as the Furuno, with a bigger screen (like the 582), it also claims to be a lot more user friendly and it is about three hundred dollars cheaper. Does anybody have any experience or heard of opinions with the SVS 650? If so,please give your opinion.

    Thanks,Cornelis.

  5. You can get the tool online for under $43 including shipping (Ebay). I just bought it and used it today for my Islander with mercruiser. If you have any suspicion about the quality of the alignment, take it right back to the shop and have them do it right in front of you and take pictures while they do it. If the alignment is correct ,the tool should just slide in without any force. If it was a lousy job you will very soon find yourself buying a new drive shaft and the female part in the engine.$$$$$.

Make sure it was done right.

  6. We had a great time fishing the derby. It was beautiful weather and although the fishing could have been better, the family atmosphere that surrounds this little derby makes it a truly joyous event.

It was a bit sad to see the Spoonfed in her moorings and not on the water fishing.

I hope you will be ably to rejoin the salmon chasing crowds soon. Give us a heads up on how you're doing.

  7. Another thing is fuel supply.

If it does fine on the low end,but sputters as you go up,it may well be that your fuel supply is lacking.

There may be an air leak in the fuel supply hoses somewhere. The fuel pump creates a vacuum that sucks the fuel to the carbs, but if there is any place where air gets into your lines (pin holes) it will happily suck that air instead. Fuel hoses with a ball pump are infamous for that sort of trouble. You may have a clogged filter on the pickup in your tank or pump.

To check this sort of thing you can take any old bottle ,put some fuel in there and connect it to a hose that goes directly to the carb. Hold the bottle well above the engine and start her up. If she does well, you know that your carb is fine. Next, connect the hose to the fuel pump and hold the bottle well below the pump. Start her up again if she does fine again you know that your problem is farther back.If it does not ,you may have a dirty fuel filter in your pump or the pump itself has a bad diafragm, or whoever repaired the carbs did open the fuel pump and did not put everything back in the right order That way by trial and deduction you should be able to pinpoint your problem.

If on the other hand, she smokes like a fiend, you have too much fuel, which means that the float was either not seated properly,or that there is a hole in the float which causes it to fill up with fuel and sink, there by causing the engine to flood, but that should happen both at high and low rpm.

One more thing.Try to run it without the engine cover and see if it runs better, if it does your air supply is problematic and this may be caused by exhaust gas leaking out and replacing the air under the cowling.

Last thing for now, make sure that your choke (electric?) is not stuck in closed position.

It is always a very good idea to buy an ORIGINAL factory manual of your engine. Don't waste your money on a Seloc or some other inferior manual.

If none of this works for you,you may have to replace your points, but for now ,just pull both plugs and see if they are both the same color. If one is very clean,it may be time for another head gasket

    Good luck.

  8. Adjust the high speed needle (mixture) if it's the older style 40hp carb.

What often happens with those old needles is that they vibrate loose ,so do not only adjust the needle but also make sure that it is tight in the seating or it will just happen again.

  9. Doors were locked. Car is a hatchback, so they could see something. After spending the week talking about this to many, we have decided to go elsewhere to spend our hard earned dollars. Oswego county will NEVER get another dime from me and at least another dozen individuals. We never knew what a crime laden area this is. There will be articles coming out in our local papers about this unfortunate event. Many will read and follow my recomendation to avoid this area. There are much safer places to take children fishing and have a great time. I have wrote several chapters in books on fishing and have been featured in many newspaper articles. Field and stream magazine has written a story on us in the past. I am used to sending out good honest information to the public that people can enjoy reading. I am speaking tonite at a Boy Scout event and this will get out to hundreds of Sportsman and Sportswomen. I do not think anyone will enjoy this fishing story. It's too bad the Troopers can't control this. We go up there and see many, many, many CO,s and Police monitoring the fisherman when they should be monitoring the real criminals. Oswego county is choking itself to death by letting this continue for apparently a very long time. It has one of the highest crime rates in the state! Not a good place to bring your children. I am taking this task very seriously. Crime prevention will be included from now on in all my articles and when speaking to children and thier families about the great outdoors. This information will be spread throughout the Twin Rivers Boy Scout council and the whole Scouting organization. That's a BOATLOAD of future fisherman and thier families that will think twice about vacationing in this area and keeping the community alive.

I think you have just lost all the potential help you might have had in recovering your stolen goods.

I sure hope that you have fewer spelling mistakes in the articles that you write in books.....

  10. I have the same problem with the "Superman" which is my favorite brown trout lure. After 5 fish it becomes a fine silver laker lure.

I still use them because Michelle at Captains Cove discontinued selling Stingers at her shop and she sold me a bunch of them for cheap.

  11. I have 41 inches of brand new 1 1/2 inch diameter fuel filler hose left over from replacing the hose on my Islander

Normal price is $15 per foot. My 3 foot 5 inches goes for $30.

This would be a good length for 16 and 18 foot boats with metal fuel tanks

If you have the 1980s fuel lines you may want to consider ethanol resistant hose like the one that I am selling.

    Cornelis.

  12. Like Don said.

SMC metal on the corner of Mount Read and Buffalo road in Rochester reopened and they have a bin of left over pieces of aluminum ( 3/4 inch by 4) and other sizes close to that. You can find your mounting plate in that bin for real cheap compared to anything else on the market.

  13. You replacing your rotten transom, probably did not add a whole lot of weight to the boat, but it certainly changed the angle (trim) of your outboard quite a bit.

You should try to bring the trim up or down a bit and see if the problem persists.
