  1. I'll try restoring it to the factory defaults as well. I do have the fish ID usually on and will now turn it off when in use. I do not have a trolling plate on my boat. I have the dual beam transducer on my boat and Billy I have only fished the eastern end of the lake and have my boat moored on the Little Salmon River. So unfortunately I won't be able to make it over to the western end of the lake, which I think you are at. Maybe if I hop on somebody's boat on that side of the lake I'll run into maybe. I have heard a lot of good things about the earlier salmon bite and the infamous Niagra bar on that end of the lake. One of these days I hope to make it over that way. Thanks for the feedback guys.
  2. I was considering getting a newer sonar and or GPS this season, but I think I am going to wait another season or two. Since that is the case I want to figure out how I can get it to read truer, for a lack of a better term. I will be out in 100' + deep water and the screen is filled with fish. So much so that it seems impossible not to snag one while trolling. I am not sure how I can get it to read more accurately. I know I can adjust the sensitivity on it. What is the rule of thumb on this? The deeper you are the less sensitive the setting? To me that seems to go against logic. Just wondering what your humminbird users or other guys who don't have the big money sonars do to achieve this. Don't get me wrong there are times I am trolling in what looks like is a barren desert down there on the screen but like I said other times, the screen is black from top to bottom with fish. Thanks and I appreciate any feedback.
  3. I am going to make the purchase at Cabelas when the have Captains weekend in March. I'll be able to actually get my hands on the units and interact with them. I'll have to research the Garmin. I am a fan of their etrex and Vista handhelds that I use during hunting season. I tried the etrex out on my boat the last two seasons. It was OK but after fishing on a friends boat who the combo, I just felt it was easy to look at one screen. Do the units have maps built into them already or do you need to purchase the cards. I was looking at some Fishing Hot Spot cards but thought they were a gimmick. It sounds like these cards are worth it. Thanks for the feedback.
  4. I am looking at upgrading to a gps/sonar combo. I have had 2 eagles before in the past and they eventually broke after a few seasons. My wife bought me a Hummingbird 565 about 4 years ago which I like and has always worked well but it doesn't have the GPS capability. I have used my hand held the past 2 seasons but would like to get a combo unit for ease of use. I had a few Lake O vets I talked to last season recommend Lowrance, but no specific model. I have read a fair amount of negative review last year on the LOU about their customer service and am hesitant to purchase one. I really like the Humminbird color sonar line and was looking at the 385i, and 597ciHD. Does anyone have any experience with these or can make another recomendation. I am looking to keep it around $500.00 and under. I appreciate the feedback.
  5. I am coming up from Kingston. This is my 3rd weekend in a row. This will also be my last for the season before I put the boat away for the year. The last 2 weekends were pretty good (only fished last Friday before those winds arrived). I understand that alot of the fish went into the river in the past few days after the big blow. My plan is to fish close to shore and then head for deeper water if they aren't hitting closer to shore. I understand that Stix hotel between Mexico and Oswego is pretty affordable. You might want to check them out. You can't catch them if you're not out on the water.
  6. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Gotta Bite First Mating aboard Beginners Luck ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s). 9/3/10 Time on Water:6:00 to 1:00. / 4:30 until blow off around 6:00 Weather/Temp:: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): Got on the water at sun up and things were slow. We set up in 110 FOW and slowly west to 120 FOW and tunrned north and things datrted happen . 7:00 am until about 10:00 we managed to boat 5 kings and 2 coho and lost 2 coho at the back of the boat. Two other releases and nobody home. Most of the fish were caught on flasher fly combos. White on whites in the early part of the morning and greens and Mtn. dew colored in the high sun. The top producing flies were the pole dancer and the custom blue fly on the Dipseys and collared greens off the riggers.Big weenie flys accounted for all our fish with the exception of the Steelhead that was caught on our only spoons set up which was a NBK mag spoon. The fish put on a display for all aboard making several runs and leaps and cart wheels out of the water. I thought we were going to lose it for sure. The afternoon was a late start due to the clients late arrival. We set up again in 120 FOW like the morning . Almost immeadiately the dipsey rod rod with the infamous Shark week fly fires. We boated a nice king. We set the rods back up and continue trolling north and and the riggerfires . The copper screams and we landed a nice coho on the pole dancer fly. Shortly after resuming our troll the other rigger fires and the mtn dew flasher/ balls deep fly takes a hit. Just as the blow hits from the west after a 20 minute fight in rough water we boated a 29lb king. We thought for sure it was heavier but the client had it weighed at Woodys and there was a 34lber weighed in just minutes before so no big fish of the day either. Ironically it was the ladies first fish ever. Not a bad introduction to fishing. We ended up having to pull all rods and get off the water due to the waves. It just wasn't safe. Unfortuntately we were not able to get back out on the water today and we headed home. Rons done for the season now and I have more trip up for myself this year before I call it quits on what has been a slow season overall for me and most that I talked too this year. ( Yes Ron gave me permission to report this, LOL) =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 12 and 4 Total Boated: 8 and 3 Species Breakdown:combined trips. 7 kings, 3 cohos , 1 steelhead ====================

  14. This may be waste if the fleas are bad now but... I'll ask just in case. I wanted to know how much mono line do you run from the power pro To the barrel and bead connection. Then I would think you would put about 6' on the connection Of flourocarbon to the lure. Would a snubber be needed with this? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  15. You know you're a die hard Lake Ontario fisherman when..... [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  16. LS, I remember that a few years ago. We're in the same spot as Usual. They are just protective because of all the kids running around. We are minus a few friends camping. A few a staying in Port 0ntario. At a hotel and a few just couldn't make it. More fish for me then I guess. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  17. My wife and I are camping at Selkirk this weekend for the holiday.I was just wondering if any Other LOU members would be there. I have met a few over the years while Camping there. It's always nice meet some of the fellow members and trade Techniques , stories and even a few beers. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  18. That swivel was an eagle claw hyperlok. I usually use a cross lock or a cost lock Swivel. I don't recall why it was on but never the less it cost Me a nice fish. Its a lesson learned. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  19. Congrats. It's seems like a fair amount of Atlantics being taken this year. I am still looking to hook inot and land my first. That's the only subspecies that I have yet to catch.
  20. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Gotta Bite ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):Jun. 11-13, 2010 Time on Water: 12 hours in 3 days Weather/Temp: Sunny friday, scattered showers Saturday, Sunday overcast and drizzling Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: 1 to 2 Surface Temp: Location:Mexico to Nine and back LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 9 Total Boated:7 Species Breakdown:6 browns, 1 king Hot Lure: Stinger Froggy Glow/ NK 28 Monkey Puke/ DW SS Green goby (goldbacking) Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 2.2-2.4 Boat Depth: Between 80-140 Fow Lure Depth: Between 50-70 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Ironically I posted a comment on how slow things have been the two times up early this year I was retracting those words by Sunday. My son graduated from high school Thursday so I took him and his buddy up for the weekend to celebrate. It was his buddy's first time up with us. He was pumped. Well we ended up catching fish everytime out (knock on wood). Mostly small browns that were between 10" & 13". I was amazed at the size of the fish compared to the spoons we were using. We only kept the 20" 5lb brown that had the smallest lamprey I had ever seen attached to it and got off just before I went to cut him. We also boated a 19" king which fought well on light tackle. My son's buddy had a good time landing it. It was his first salmon. We also released it back into the depths. We did take 2 nice hits on the lead core. One 6 color the other 7 color . Our First miss screamed about 50 yds out and broke the water bedind the boat off in the distance. Looked like a nice steelie, but he spit the hook shortly after breaking water. The best rip took off about 100 yds since we had the drags set very light. That happened not far from the buoy line in front of the power plant. My son felt it on for a second or two and it was gone. He reeled it in only to find the swivel straigtened out and the NK28 spoon gone. I can't remember the name of the spoon, but it was one I rarely used and none of the local shops had it in stock when I went to buy another to replace it. Anyway, when we trolled back through the same area again we notice a the underbelly of a large fish, looked like a walleye stuggling to swim. Unforutnately It way into the buoys by then and drifting closer to shore. We had wondered if this may have been what broke the swivel I guess we'll never know. I had my doubts about this particular type of swivel and it's a style I rarely use and I'm really sorry that I didn't switch it out when I had the chance. We did manage another small brown shortly after that before having to head to port to seal the boat up and head for home. We all had a good time on the water. My son and his friend caught alot more fish from shore back at the marina ( Little salmon river)every night after we got off the lake. They landed a nice northern, smallmouth, largemouths and rock basss as well as perch and even a water snake. They both had a great time and his friend couldn't thank me enough for taking him up with us. I'm going to try and get up again soon. I attached a few pics of some of the fish. No monsters just steady action and a good time.
  21. I will be heading up this weekend which will be my 3rd time up this year and although we managed a few fish the past two times, we had to really work for the few we caught as opposed to years past. I know the water levels are low, temps are warm and that may have a factor in it as well. I remember reading a post last year on the forum about the 2010 is not going to be a good one for salmon. Did they not stock as many a few years ago as in years prior? It even seems that there are fewer topics on this site because not alot to report or talk about. Just curios what your thoughts are.
  22. Thanks for the responses guys. I went to their website and was a little disappointed to see that the Sd does not dive nearly as deep as my deeper divers or original dipsey divers. I guess this will be more for steelies and cohos then. Not that there is anything wrong with them. I just thought i could get a little deeper than what number were listed. Hopefully, I'll get a few fish this weekend while using them.
  23. I added a few more lead core reels to my set ups and have taken the copper rod off to make room for them. I was considering mounting the my Okuma 55 to a 7" MH acion Ugly Stik. Does anybody also use this as a copper rod or any other recommendations?
