  1. Well - I'm not proud, but we usually stop at a pharmacy on the way to the ramp for my 13 year old daughter to buy some teen magazines. Also, we usually put in at Point Grove - the deal is after we fish, we stop at the ice cream shop/mini golf/go karts across route 3 afterwards for my 12 and 13 year old girls. Kind of a tradition now. I guess I'll do anything to get more than two rods in the water.
  2. Try to get that speed down to 2-3 mph. If you don't have speed on the boat yet, a small, handheld GPS works well and will give you accurate surface speed.
  3. Thanks Bottom Feeder and good to hear from you Tim! We were talking about you as we passed Catfish. We did get out this past Monday/Tuesday and put a few in the box but struggled. Monday we went out of Sandy Pond and went north. Went 1 for 2 on a black/silver rapala. Then ducked into Sandy Pond and trolled up a pig of a Northern. Tuesday we went out of Mexico and did most of our trolling between Catfish and just west of the plant. Went 2-4, 1 on the black/silver again and the other on a gobie. We did miss one right in front of the Little Salmon in that 57 water. It sure is hard to lock up on Browns with all that slack line caused by in-line planers. Temps up north were 44-47, picked the one brown in a tiny pool of 53 degree water right in fron of a creek. Down south in mexico bay temps were warmer - 48-49 with a large body of 50-57 water between Little Salmon and the high rocks. Fish came between 6-24 fow.
  4. I usually only get out a couple of times early in the season for Browns. We usually go out of the Big Salmon and head north to the creeks north of Sandy Pond. Usually do pretty well, but it's a pretty long haul when it's rough. Anybody willing to suggest some spots south of the big salmon?
  5. Yes, that helps! Do you know if they went around the island and came into the channel from the north, or was the regular channel coming in from the south open?
  6. Plan on doing some trout fishing early next week either out of the Salmon River and then heading south or out of Sandy Pond and then heading north. Anybody know how the Sandy Pond channel to the lake faired this winter? Last spring we had to poll through, even in a small boat, just to get to the channel.
  7. Thanks for your suggestions. Repairs are minor - I hope. I'm having an electrical charging issue on an 88 hp Evinrude/Johnson that I can't figure out. Changed out the rectifier but evidently that was not the problem. Have to put a new gear cable is as well and motor could just use a tune up.
  8. Good to be back! I'm looking to have some work done on my boat somewhere from Fairhaven to Pulaski, on or off the lake. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!
  9. Gotta believe there are still big pushes of fish to come in - whether they will take a fly or a jplug is another matter. I can't believe the big fall push of salmon into the salmon and Oswego rivers are all already in the harbor or estuary. Had great marks a couple weekends ago, even in the deeper water, just could not get them to go.
  10. Just down right ugly the last few days. Heard tournament winning fish today out of the east end was 1 5 lb. king.
  11. Posting from the lake now - in front of the Big Salmon. Good marks in close and between 130-150 fow - no takers. SLOW!!! Tons of boats but nobody is doing much. Bunch of fish in the estuary.
  12. We'll have our 25' Searay up in Port Ontario later this week. Lighthouse and Clarks are both full. Camp is right there so we would rather keep the boat in Port Ontario and fish there, rather than out of Sandy Pond or Mexico Point. Anybody have access to or leads to any dock space in Port Ontario? We'll pay ofcourse.
  13. from the reports I am hearing, you did not miss much - but did save some gas.
  14. 2 rods per man but you can increase your presentation by adding sliders (6-8' mono leader with spoon or fly combo) to your downrigger rod above bottom presentation.
  15. Not too picky - just something not plastic - something that will not spin from the pressure placed on them by diver rods. Thanks!
  16. How many of you guys not drop a line until you see a decent picture on the screen. I went out with a plan yesterday to start in 120 fow based upon a reports. Wasted a couple of hours in 120-155 with no marks and no fish. After moving deeper, we found marks and started taking hits. Being a beginner at this, I seem to often start where I've heard fish were yesterday and often fishing with no marks and taking no hits. So, will you guys scout until you find fish before dropping lines?
  17. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Why Wait? ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 8/11 Time on Water: 4:00-dark Weather/Temp: clear Wind Speed/Direction: NW Waves: 0-2 Surface Temp: 74 Location: Mexico Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated: 2 Species Breakdown: King Hot Lure: Fly, no spoon bite Trolling Speed: 2.3 Down Speed: ? Boat Depth: 100-200 Lure Depth: 90-145 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ============= Broke the Port Ontario inlet about 4:00 pm in slop but lake laid down nice once a couple miles from shore. Started in 120 fow with nothing on the screen, fished out to 155 with still a blank screen. Pulled everything and ran due west to 220 and a blank screen and started working in. Beautiful screen from 205-190. Doubled up with 24 and 28 lbs. - 111 down on the rigger with little boy blue, and 384 out on a dipsey pulling a hammer/glow green. 10 minutes later took a great rip on the same dipsey but never hooked up. Would have loved to stay out, but was getting real dark.
  18. Another nice king on the Eastern side - I see a trend!!!! I'm heading out of the Salmon River tomorrow afternoon with a buddy who has been out with me twice -- with two skunks to show for it. I'd really like to put him on some fish so if anybody wants to share details - I'm all ears. I was gonna look around for a decent screen, but was thinking of starting in about 90' fow for browns/kings and moving out from there. No down temp or speed, so I'll be relying on SOG. Usually, by now I've put away the stick baits and am exclusively flies and spoons - but those gobie stick baits were sure hot this spring. Anybody still fishing sticks for browns? I'll let you know what we found when we get back.
  19. Good topic. So, what colors are best sunrise/sunset, bright sun, cloudy? Darks when it's dark, bright when it's sunny? Though I'm a true greenhorn, seems like greens and whites are my most productive when I'm catching (which is more the exception than the norm), but now that I think about it, I'm not running a whole lot other than those colors.
  20. How about lighthouse marina at the mouth of the big Salmon about 7 miles south of sandy pond? I go out of Pine Grove all the time in my 17', it would be tight with your 22'. When I passed lighthouse last week docks were not it and it was boarded up. Don't know if thye are opening htis year?
  21. When I hit that area last week, not too much temp fluctuation either, but as whole, south winds really brought the temps up. I could not find anything about 49-50 last week.
  22. I'm surprised you were even able to get out of Sandy Pond through the channel. I've got a 17' and was not able to get out through the channel. Went around the island and came in from the north side. Was able to barely get through - 12-18" deep, had to pole through on the way back in. That said, good brown bite out front of Sandy. Sandy Pond marina's floating docks are sitting on the lake bottom - no water.
