Great day in 8R today started off as why am I here drove 73 miles to end up in a blizzard sat for 4 hrs and saw one squirrel,, went and warmed up ,then put on my favorite ,still hunt half of our property found deer beds and fresh tracks after the snow stopped ,and the sun came out ,,, found two sets of fresh tracks,, after 100 yards of sneaking with the binoculars found this girl !! Felt great to punch a tag .. love my southern tier hunting with my old mans 30/30 can’t beat it...
I love my 30/30. I have a Marlin 336 CS that was handed down from my dad to me. Always a special feeling to squeeze the trigger with it

Congrats to everyone that has connected. I have 3 sits left for the season then I have to hang it up. (Work and family obligations). I am lucky enough to have a full freezer but yet still feel like it’s been a so/so season. A have let a lot of racks go early and haven’t seen one since the gun opener. I have hunted every morning and night that I could and the weather allowed. I have hunted close to home, 45 miles north, and 95 miles south, 3 different counties.
This thread at times has kept me sane and very much entertained. I’m with the guys on the low side of seeing deer - normal sit im lucky to see 1-4, and many times 0, but it doesn’t deter my drive.
Best of luck to all those still out shoot straight and have a great Holiday Season and a Merry Christmas
Maybe I’ll have one more post in me if I can connect ....

Very few shots (deer) in Wayne county this morning. Waterfowl guys letting loose. Didn’t see anything including on my 40 mile drive which is unusual

Deer must be moving this morning. Heard close to two dozen shots from all different directions. More shooting so far then opening day

Saw 2 deer around 330 in the thick stuff around 80-100 yards. Never got to see their heads. I think they winded me (swirling wind). Caught their tails as they went away.

What a difference 40 miles makes. Back home 8” + heavy wet snow. Here...not even a drop on the ground

Last 3 mornings and afternoons I have seen zero deer. This morning on my walk in it looked like a party last night with all the tracks. Definitely late night movement for my area
Headed to Wayne county for afternoon sit

Last 2 nights sat on edge of thicket and harvested bean field. NW winds 20-30+ with 10” of snow made for zero movement for me. Did see just one set of tracks in snow from night before. Very slow

Setup on the edge of the thicket looking out. First time all season in a ground blind for me. Wind is really picking up and snowing now. 7A oswego county

Hunted Wayne county up by the lake this morning. Waterfowl hunters letting the lead fly. I’ve had a string of bad luck hunting lately (mostly self induced). In my stand at 645 this morning and shots everywhere. At 720 I hear the “train” coming through the swamp. Single file I counted 1-9 of them and not a single horn. So then I decided to take the largest one. Well it just so happened that it was the first one and by that time she was 40 yards away. I had a relatively narrow window to shoot through, but she presented a perfect broadside shot. Needles to say she didn’t go anywhere.

First Thanksgiving I didn’t hunt. I stayed home and help the Mrs get ready for a big family dinner (25 people). My buddy asked last night if could sit in my stand this morning. I said sure. He was in stand at 640 and at 720 this guy walked by...... glad to see someone I know get him but still .....

What’s the going rate out there for processors?
I’ve been going to the same
Place for 10+ years. Used to be $60 then about 3-4 years ago it went to $70. I pulled up today to drop off my deer and this years price is $85

Woke up this morning to 18” of snow. Took me over 2 hours to get driveway clean. I put all Bow equipment away and got everything laid out for tomorrow’s opener. Then my phone rang .....
My prime land down South received 14” of snow and it’s still snowing. (Usually never has this much until late muzzleloader season) there is No way to make it to camp (over 6 miles up the mountain on a slate and dirt road)
Plan B.
Drove over to property 2 by the house and the loggers are out there doing their thing. I stopped and talked to them and they will be working through the weekend
Plan C.
I have one more property to hunt but it normally isn’t any good during gun - but hey it’s better than nothing ....
Good luck to everyone out today and that makes it out this weekend

Sat from 1pm - Dark. Was on the edge of a bedding area where it meets a cut bean field. We have 2” snow and the only tracks I saw were turkey. No movement at all for me tonight in 7A.

Congrats Whaler, great deer!!! Any deer with a Bow is a trophy!!!

Very true Rich. There is truly something special about “outsmarting” a whitetail to be able to harvest one with a bow. Anyone who bow hunts knows that feeling of a deer within 30 yards or less. And that is why we do it.

I was sitting in the bowl of a deep ravine this year at my newly acquired property in 7R, when out of nowhere I hear crashing, see leaves flying and sticks breaking. All I saw was a huge black fur object come flying down the ravine 30 yards from me. I almost fell out of my stand thinking it was a black bear charging. When it hit the bottom of the ravine they broke apart. It was 2 big males fighting and they got tangled up on the top and rolled all the way to the bottom. Had to clean my shorts after that one.
