  1. First I need to correct something I said in the above entry. I said cast the jig "downwind". I should have said "upwind". Makes a lot of difference. Jig in the water a lot longer if do it upwind. Sorry about that. One of those senior moments I guess. Now for the good news. Went back to Belhurst area (Seneca-north) again today. What a difference a week makes. 2 trout in 8 hours last week, 8 trout boated, one came off and at least a half dozen hits today before noon. Tried verticle jigging (fast and slow) but only got one that way. All the rest came on the jigging/casting? method mentioned above. Today, anyway, they just loved that method. Got most in 70-80 fow with a white paddletail(shaker) on 1 oz (Hermit's) jig. Two of the 8 were 30 inchers and most of them put up a very good fight. My drag got a workout today. The 3 I kept had a belly full of alewives so maybe they have got the feed bag on now. Was my lucky day I think. Got 4 LT between 11:00 and noon. When I looked up at the sky to the west, it did not look right. I decided it was time to head back even though the bite was on. Man, am I glad I did. I got the boat/trailer all ready to pull out on the highway and all h... broke loose. Heavy, heavy rain. Windy, windy and even some hale. I just stayed in the launch parking lot for a good hour waiting for the monsoon to move on.
  2. I think sometimes the lakers like their quarry moving more horizontally than vertically. Sometimes I have had better luck (while drifting) casting my jig down wind as far as I can, letting the jig settle to the bottom, then reeling in let's say 25-50 feet, then let the jig settle to the bottom again. Repeat this action 4 or 5 times before reeling in back to the boat. Although I only got 2 LT on my last trip, both hit while using this method. Vertical presentation was not working. Maybe something to try.
  3. Well after an almost 4 week shutdown, finally made it to Seneca Belhurst area for a an 8 hour solo trip last Friday. Same old story unfortunately. Lots of jig chasers but not many hitters. Ended up with 2 in the boat . One was a really nice 30 incher that put up a heck of a fight. Sure is fun fighting them on light tackle. Still lots of LT in the 60- 125 fow area but a lot of them don't show up on the fish finder until the jig gets over their head. When they finally decide they are hungry there should be some good times in that area in the near future. Water is really murky right now. Maybe from all the runoff. On the trip to the launch you can tell we have had a pile of rain when you look into the corn and soybean fields. Lot of stunted growth. The murky water may be affecting the bite. Just another of the hundred or so excuses I have used over the last 60 years. Ha Ha. Coming back to the launch (at the old chamber) I got a little concerned. The parking lot was FULL of cars. Thought to myself," Man, I hope my truck isn't blocked in". Think it was the Musselman contest going on. Turned out the nice people had left a hole I could get through so was not a problem. But this old heart does not need those kind of suprises. Another item is in the pm I was getting some hits that did not feel like lake trout. Last year we got some 15 inch perch on our big lake trout jigs in the same area (50 fow) and I wonder if they are not there now. Will drop down some smaller jigs and see if they are back on next trip.
  4. Sorry Hermit (Alec) - Read your post after I asked above question. Looks like should go color route. Do love watching the lakers attack my jig on the fish finder. Need to save up I guess and hope no more motor problems. Notice you haven't been out jigging much lately but sounds like lakers have not been cooperating much from other LOU reports. I have not been out for 3 weeks myself (been visiting first grandbaby in Portland, Oregon) and am chomping at the bit. Will head to Belhurst come he.. or high water this week and report back here.
  5. Question - I have a $200 Lowrance (which I like better than my $200 Humminbird) that tracks jigs well but I have problems seeing the screen in bright sunlight. Was thinking of buying a color model (until I had to spent $2330 to repair my motor). My question is, can you see a color screen a lot better than a black and white screen in bright sunlight?
  6. Best luck lately with zoom super fluke in chartreuse
  7. If you already have jigged lakers you probably already know this but even if you are not seeing lake trout marks on the bottom Don't give up on the area. There can often be lots of them on the bottom but they have their bellies touching the bottom. Drop the jig to the bottom under transducer and watch the fish finder. Sometimes 4 or 5 will magically appear as your jig gets near bottom .
  8. Hi S k 8- Rushco gas and hardware has 91 octane non ethanol for$4.20 / gallon in Rushville. You probably drive right by it on your way to Keuka. Is on side street so little hard to find. Not open Sunday's.
  9. Hi Pete - well I have finally got my boat back but not sure it is 100 per cent fixed. Still runs rough sometimes. Hopefully it is from old gas left over from last November. Gas was treated with Startron back then however.
  10. They are setting up a good sized carnival in the grass area right at the launch as of yesterday. Can not imagine what the grass area will look like after all this rain. Lot of construction workers parked there too. Very little truck/trailer parking left. Lots of LT marks and jig chasers at the 60 - 85 fow drop-off across from Belhurst but unfortunately not a lot of biters.
  11. I know most fishermen keep a sharp eye on weather forecasts but just in case you have not noticed, looks like the possibility for some nasty weather this weekend. Might want to keep an eye on upcoming forecasts when making weekend plans.
  12. Another option. Using a bait needle, run a 1 oz trolling sinker up inside a white ice tube and attach a sharp #4 treble to the back end with a split ring. Also I get most of my lakers on the retrieve., after hitting the bottom. sometimes fast, sometimes slow.
  13. just before the falling jig and the attacking trout meet start reeling in and get ready for the end of your pole to take a sudden nose dive. too cool
  14. a tactic that i use all the time when i am drifting is to stand in the back of the boat and cast my jig downwind far enough so when the jig hits bottom it is directly under the motor and transducer thus it is vertical. Casting distance varies depending on wind speed and water depth. If you have your fish finder in the right location you can watch your jig as it heads for the bottom and hopefully watch as trout come off the bottom to attack your jig. A definate blast..
  15. Gosh, I hope it is not the same disease that absolutely obliterated the Seneca pike population 4 or 5 years ago. The lake was teaming with nice size pike then almost overnight they died off. Heard reports of people seeing them lying dead on the bottom and I saw some floating with a green scum on them. I thought the population was rebounding but this sounds scarey. I love catching pike.
  16. Sk8man - thanks for asking about my motor. Stopped at the marina at the end of last week and they said the part HAD come in. Have not received a call yet however saying the old girl was ready to pick up. Thanks to Hermit and my usual fishing buddy (Doug) I have been out 3 times in last two weeks with them so have not gone bonkers yet. Got a real tutorial from Hermit on catching salmon (see above) yesterday. Thanks a bunch Hermit (Alec). -Al
  17. Do not know about Cayuga but we were getting them at 140 - 160 fow jigging on Keuka 2 weeks ago.
  18. SK8 - Yes, if it were not for my buddy offering his boat (nice one too) I might have done that.
  19. Thanks Alec.I am on water but my boat isn't. In buddies boat. Believe it or not marina says still waiting for yamaha part. 5 months now
  20. 2 of us jigged up 51 eating size lakers between 11 & 5:30 yesterday. white tubes in 140-160 fow just south of the state park was where the action was. great day for deep jigging, no wind. all trout were spitting up alewives
  21. WOW - Keuka is just a year round Lake Trout factory!
  22. SK8 - Yes a pain. Sure do miss the old girl. Especially on some of those 35 degree plus days we have had.
  23. Have been to state park launch and the motel launch on the south end of Keuka over the last couple of days. No ice in either one. Owner at motel (nice guy) said a couple of guys jigged up 45 Lake Trout a couple of weeks ago. Boat still at Stivers at north end of Seneca. Part from Japan has not come in yet. Glad did not try to get motor repaired during main fishing times.
  24. Hi Pete - Not sure yet. The guy told me over the phone but when he hit me with the price my mind went blank. Said had to wait for a part coming from Japan (Yamaha). Yikes. Only saving grace is a new motor that size would be $7,000 plus so hopefully this old girl will keep running for a long time after she gets her heart transplant.- Al
