  1. Yes congrats on the derby fish! I bumped into on the fritz as they were pulling out at I bay launch...mechanical issues a bummer for sure. Definitely need to head way north today as I found w/my temp probe 6 miles out and still no good. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. Fishing stunk today. I just typed up a whole breakdown of temp in both 50 flow and six miles offshore then "unfortunately lOU stopped" before I could post. I'm not in the derby so don't care...anyway here's the short inaccurate version: zero-20' 67-63°, 25-35' 55°, 35-50 47° , 50' on down 43° so set riggers and divers up high and 4 color core still slow bite went 0/3 with closest fish to boat a small steelhead lost in rigger line tangle.... slow day you didn't miss out at the I bay today. Anyone else have better success? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Well...I tracked down some baseplates, mounted them up and went for a fish...one worked flawlessly. The other cranks up and lowers great; except the line counter does not spin...I'll look up the schematic and order up part(s) to repair. I am impressed with the smooth drag and reel on these riggers though. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Well I've used electric Big Jon (4 of em on the back of a Wellcraft sport fisherman I used to own), cannons, walkers... strangely enough as the years go on the lower tech I get! I go for 100% reliability now. I use Penn reels w/o line counters (I can estimate distance off ball pretty easy) , and figured their riggers would work like their reels...we'll see! I use a fishhawk temp probe then set 'em at the break. Hopefully the riggers work as well as their old reels... Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Hi I recently picked up a pair of 620 manual riggers for my boat - are there any typical problems with these or upgrades I should do before heading out? I've heard they're pretty bombproof but we'll see... Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. Get a brightly colored kayak and a survival suit if you want to paddle. A canoe will catch the wind too much, and will be both frustrating and dangerous. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Wow! Amazing fish! It looks like you and pikefreak may have started something here. Now I am imagining how big a late-season drum could possibly be....will there a 40 pounder lurking down there this September?!? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Thank you all for your input and suggestions - I appreciate it! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. I like simple Penn 209 level winds. They are bomb-proof with smooth drags and easy to maintain. Set the dipsys on 3 and let out as much line as you would tolerate reeling back in! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. Hello - I used to run my wire dipseys with single strand stainless steel monel wire. It was simple to attach swivels I would just use a Bimini twist. Monel is a larger diameter than the 19 strand wire so I switched 2 years ago to 19 strand 40lb trolling wire. I have had issues with the wire breaking where I tied it to the swivel when I jerk the rod in order to retrieve the diver/flasher/fly. I have been using a palomar as suggested to me by another fisherman. After sending yet another complete diver/flasher/fly rig to Davey Jones' locker yesterday I am about fed up and am considering going back to single strand. Before I do, please tell me what method of attachment you prefer for 17 strand wire to the swivel. Also, do you re-tie before every outing? Palomar knot? Crimps? Thank you very much. 12. Another banner day yesterday. Here is my net-man hoisting one of a dozen bronze-backs exceeding 5 lbs over the rail. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Awesome fish! They put up an awesome fight. I've seen people catch coolers full of trout and salmon only to bury them in the garden etc...Sheepshead (freshwater drum) are fun to target, amazing fighters, and that is without a doubt the largest I have ever seen. Congratulations on a great fish! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  15. I will set out two or three of my downrigger rods on the windward side with a 3 way swivel, 2' dropper line to a 2oz lead sinker, then a flatfish or kwickfish when I am fishing solo and want to take a break and eat a sandwich. It is awesome when the drag starts screaming when you least expect it and there's no engine noise. If its a faster drift I'll go up to a 4 oz weight. I never see anyone else doing this out there and don't know why. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. Has been great!! Routine 4 lbs some bigger. Especially in West River but bring a Canadian license. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. Nice fish! What did you catch them on? Depth? What do you think let to 5 "misses"? I've often had a tough time on Hemlock and am always looking for information to improve as a fisherman. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. I launched out of the north end today no problem. Pulled my 450 lb wooden Lyman loaded with gear out using a front wheel drive minivan - didn't spin the wheels at all in 1st gear. Yes the water is higher than normal but no problem launching this afternoon. As for the fishing...the water has a high turbidity. My flasher / fly combos were invisible 2 ft down...I went 0/1 on a rigger 65 ft down 20 ft back (NK wonder bread) Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. I was out in the afternoon in the same area - random logs etc...tripping releases even into the blue water. As far as temp I dropped my fishhawk TD down through the column in the mud at 60 fow it was 51 on top and steadily decreased to 48. In the "green" it was 50 on top and steady decline to 46.5. Out in the blue in 70 fow it was 48 on top and a smooth decline to 46.5 on bottom - no sharp breaks. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. OK so I've fished this lake for years, every season including ice. I even caught a 10 pound walleye there in 2008 (wtf??) However I have had many tough days there (including today). I pulled dipseys with flasher / fly from 10 ft to 30 fow. Bounced riggers off bottom in 70 fow. Also up top100' back down 5'. Pulled stick baits (Rapalas in orange / gold and flo. yellow). I pulled lead core w/ Sutton's (3 color and 10 color). I jigged with white plastics. I casted football head jigs w/ tube bait into shore and bounced bottom to 20 ft. You get the point - I threw about the whole tackle box at the lake and not one bite?? I am a lifetime fisherman and can get it done just about anywhere but both Hemlock and Canadice consistently leave me scratching my head. Any help greatly appreciated!
