  1. I didnt get that one?... What was that suppose to mean? "Bobby, Jason" Was that referring to me? I'm confused by that... Nice fish though! I'd probably mount it because the best way to get a 12 lb landlock is to mount a 10 lb one.
  2. I,m in for a $20 biggest brown or landlock Salmon as a side bet! What do you think Nick? Thats $40 for the whole event, $20 to be in one, $40 to be in it to win it all! Just a thought to see what would make it a bigger event... Thoughts anyone... Nice work organizing this event Nick! Love to see this become something!
  3. I'll keep that in mind, but I have other plans... That was smooth, I'll have to think long and hard to beat that one!
  4. Yes, it sure was. When you watch that video of Theresa's king you can hear all the joking and laughing, and to see how excited she was to land her first King, that summed the whole day up. Great fishing and tons of laughs! Tell Rich he got me pretty good when he took my phone away! I didn't know he and Theresa had it planned... but when she told me I got a good laugh. She said "What did you think when he took your phone"? I said I didn't know what to think, I was surprised. Then when I learned he's done it before I said "makes sense cause it was too easy for him" I don't know if I can top that one, but I will try! Big Thank You from Theresa and I. You guy's are Great!
  5. First, let me say that Capt Rich and Capt Steve run a very professional Charter Service and have a beautifully equipped Vessel. Their 2 Captain approach to fishing makes for a productive and efficient fishing combination, and when you fish with them, it is also very obvious the mutual respect they have for one another. They are not only good at putting you on fish, but know how to make the trip a real blast. Great Lakes Lure Co is proud to be affiliated with such a great organization as "Blind Squirrel Sportfishing". The day started out with a good number of hit's while brown trout fishing. We caught a few and lost even more. One of the first fish we hooked and lost was really nice. We also hooked a couple nice lakers, and Theresa broke a personal best with a 14lb'r. While clearing and re setting lines Capt Steve starts yelling "Board" and we notice a boat approaching from the fog, then, we notice their board and there was no one steering the boat. Were hooked up and fighting a fish, and their all standing on the back of the boat. Steve yells "Board" one more time and they realize were about to have a problem. Steve managed to grab the planer line and pull the board out of harms way, and the other boat managed to get turned and began pulling their board. Disaster avoided and we boated our fish. During the morning brown trout fishing, Steve and I ran some new lures, tested 2 new forms for the N35 that's being developed for Lake Ontario fishing ( very promising lures) and discussed colors and some possible new lures to be developed in the future. Capt Steve and Capt Rich had some good info to share and offered some very good advise regarding new lure patterns and colors that we will begin to experiment with in the future. After our morning brown trout run and a successful lake trout run (boated 2 - 14 lb lakers) it was time to set up for kings. After searching for temperature we hit an area where Rich and Steve suggested we would hook up. Capt Rich was told he couldn't eat till he put us on a "Screamer", and that he did! Theresa boated her first King ever, a 16 lb'r. Like Steve said, this fish put up one crazy fight! Theresa handled the rod like a pro and was so excited! (you have to see the video on my Facebook page, I posted the link.) When Theresa was handed the rod and the fish was screaming off line she yells "This ain't no f-ing lake trout!" and we all just started laughing. (You had to be there) That became the newly famous phrase of the boat! Theresa and I had a great time! Theresa keeps telling me it was her best birthday ever! We haven't stopped laughing about the trip. Capt Steve and Capt Rich know how to run a great charter! Good fishing, good laughs and an overall excellent experience. Thanks for such a great trip and for all the advise and conversations we had regarding lures. This looks to be a very promising relationship, and we look forward to our association with Blind Squirrel Sportfishing! 6. Anything to identify it if someone happens to spot it? Besides make and size.
  7. Today is my father's birthday. My father is the founder of what is today the "Great Lakes Lure co." Started in 1983. Happy Birthday Milton Oakes, aka Junior!
  8. Too bad you live so far away! I'd have a job for you! Nice work. Your getting it down very nice.
  9. I don't really think there is a right or wrong way if they are catching fish. The great thing about rig fishing is it's easily adaptable to a range of uses and techniques. It's not something Charters will want to do, clients won't want to pull rigs, and it's to complicated to teach someone who's never done it. Personally, I like statistics, and running rigs allows me to maximize my spoon count, catch rate and allows me to have more accurate detail about the fishing. With regard's to weight. I weighed our's today just to make sure I was right, because it's been a while. We run 48 oz on boards and jug, 56 oz on the boat rigs. That's 3 lbs and 3.5 lbs. I think Les and I need a fishing Fix soon! All this work and no play has me going nuts!
  10. Yes, I dont use beadchain and removable leaders. I tie my rigs and keep them wrapped on a holder. So my rig rod has a big snap to hook to the rig. So therefore, once I hook my sinker snap to a bunji off the back of the planer and let out all my rig, then I hook the rig to the rod and then the weight. Let that down 25 -40 feet and you have a 5 spoon spread fishing the surface area. Works awesome!
  11. I'd love to see that! I prefer rigs, and it is almost an art to it. Here is something else to consider with rigs. Instead of sending them down, hook them to a planer and surface fish them. Put the weight on the weight on last once the rig is attached to the snap swivel on the rod. We refer to it as a "wing" rig.
  12. Les, I agree with you, and i've also used different weights to change my spread, similar to what you described but I found that when using Higher speed trolling lures on rigs they tend to put a lot more drag on the rig. Not un common to see the rod "bounce" from the action of the lures. Also, When you begin to use planer boards and a Jug to haul rigs, its important to keep the rigs down and therefore out of "harms way". Too many times i've tied up rigs in a turn and thats the main reason for the weight. Especially when they have more than one fish on them , as they tend to do on a planerboard or jug. (because of the time between checks)The additional weight puts things closer and tighter and allows you to be more confident in turning, knowing things will stay in their respected "Zone" We had a very lengthy discussion at the shop yesterday on this topic with a fella who purchased some lures yesterday. He saw our box of weights and started to ask questions about the size, which led to a discussion on how we came to using such heavy weights. Tangles were the biggest reason for it. When you begin to run 4 or more 5 leader rigs, weight becomes very important, especially when in traffic. Just my thoughts on weights. I prefer them heavy. I change leader distance now to tighten up my spread.
  13. I will teach you how to run 4 at a time... I liked your Dad, he was a smart man and had a good vision for Sheldrake point area. Tight lines Darkwater! Talk with you soon!
  14. OB1, You would know that! How many tourny wins for you with KW'S? 2 that I know of in the last 2 years. Keep up the good work!
  15. Priceless! But I believe he deserves your lure since he fished it with confidence and won a derby with it! Does it have a name? Wicked Orange is the color I buy. I thought that was a good name? Ask your daughter to pull the rabbit out of the hat. She has been on a roll today!
  16. We pull (4) 5 leader rigs when fishing the finger lakes mostly. Our preferred weight is 3.5 lbs. Our lightest is 3.0 lbs. We used to run 60 oz back when 10 leaders were our preferred method. I will go as far to say if your fishing 5 leader rigs, 3 lbs should be used today with the speeds were running and the choice of lures these days. This will be especially hard for "sutton" guys to get past. ( The guy who won the Canandaigua tourny was a sutton guy, using GLL's) If your not running suttons, your probably too light, and probably too slow as a result. Please observe any lure your about to use and consider the speed it takes to use it effectively and chose a weight that makes you fish effectively. We make a wide range of trolling lures. Not all are intended to be run together. Please be observant about choosing your lures and know what your using. Not all are the same and all lures should be checked for "tune" . Tight lines! Hope you got something out of this...
