Same here dude. Erie is the closest Laker fishery to me (about two hours north) and I'm up there probably 30-40 days a year on the bluewater and Tribs to feed the Char, Trout, and Drum addiction. I fished Lake O for the first time last July-August but we didn't find any lakers as we went out of Olcott (good Steelie fishing though). Aiming to fish Rochester for them 3-5 days this summer, that seems to be a good port for Lake Trout. Seems like I was the only guy up there last summer asking for Laker tips but putting next to no effort towards those Sammins' lol.

Rochester basin is one of the best place for lakers on lake Ontario. Before you get there, get in touch with Gambler right here in LOU, he's the guy you want to talk to. He's from the area and has all the gear you need. He has a web site, google it gambler rigs.

  2. Hi Steve, I don't have lots of experience but in the summer months I would go out in the deeper part of the lake where the water temps is more stable. I think most guys go out deep when kings bite slow down and fish for steelhead and coho in the first 20 to 50 feet of water. I would use spoons, spin doctor with fly in red or orange. When out deep look for temperature break and scum line. Hope this help. Good luck.

Our average size for Erie is 8-15 pounds and 26-32", but not sure if it's any different over in NY waters. Interested to hear as well.

Just like you lakers are my favorite species. I'm from Montreal, I fished lake Ontario few times in the last two years, averaging 10 to 15 pounds. I fish a lot more lake Champlain (2 hours drive) and average 6 to 10 pounds. Lots of them in both lakes. Personally, I would take great care of it, I wish I had that kind of fishing closer from home.

I fish out of Barcelona for lakers all the time.  I usually head east out of the harbor, about half way to Dunkirk.  Hit 90fow and drag some cowbells / peanut flys along the bottom, or some Moonshine Glow spoons.  You'll be into them in no time.  At least this is my experience during the summer.  Right now the surface temps in the eastern basin are in the low 50s.  So the lakers may be a little more scattered in the water column.

Hi jigstick, what's the average size for lakers in Erie?

I can add something :) Get some of Brian's Gambler rigs if you really want to catch lakers and run them as mentioned as above....surefire way to get the big ones...

X2 I got many combos and they all catch fish. The best fishing expense I have done in recent years.

Starting to heat up in Bath? Do you also fish the Wellington area?

As for rods, if you run the Torpedo 19-strand wire you don't need roller guide rods. That particular wire is soft enough that it won't damage the ceramic rings on better quality diver rods. Spend the extra $10 per spool for the 19-strand and save $100 per rod not buying rods with roller guides.

Hi John, I have two Talora diver rods that I use with braid. If I switch to Torpedo 19-strand wire, do I still need twili tips?

    Thanks.

  8.  Yes after some mouth to mouth, just kidding. The method I use is a bogo grip with about  6 feet of line attached to a cleat, continue trolling and when fish comes around pull in bogo and let her swim off. The frys can usually be launched  head first into the water and off they go.

I looked at the bogagrip and that thing is expensive! Goes from 125$ to 300$, which model is strong enough to hold the fish behind the boat?

  9. Well,

I don't know what to say, today was a rough day, not just the waves. Past the lighthouse was really rough today.

The fish are there, there is no pattern or depth, scattered all over, most kings seemed to be in 85' to 105 FOW. There were lots of suspended lakers down 45'.

Started at pill boxes, worked out past mountain. Finally fired a screamer on rigger, flasher fly, that caught my winger rigger line, lost fish trying to bring both lines in. Turned and headed back.....long time then Fired a dipsy diver, came off, another dipsy screamer, landed it, 34", not sure of weight. While clearing a rigger rod a King hit so hard it almost took rod out of my hands, immediately broke line.

Then no king hits for hours, caught some more lakers. Ended the day 1-4 Kings, a few knockoffs, and 5 lakers. All we need is a few days of quiet time on the lake, and temps will stabilize and look out, it's gonna be hot.f91ed0e2d6afa81fe1f21cb4eb183d6b.jpg

That's a nice King you got there. It looks like they didn't start changing colors yet. I hope that the conditions are going to stabilize so I can get there for a few days.
