  1. With supply chain shortages I got one Penn Warfare 30LWLC from FishUSA. It’s larger than I realized for my 1000’ wire setup. But. I do need a reel for 300’ copper. Anyone know how much backing to run for a Warfare 30 with 300’ copper? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. Sometimes I answer my own questions. Is that a bad sign? I found the nylon drag washers and nylon insulating washers at Fish307.com. About $30 total for 2 riggers worth shipped. I’ll report back with the results. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. I pulled my Penns apart a couple weeks ago. It seems the drag washers are nylon. They seemed in OK shape but one of them was definitely giving up a few shavings. I cleaned all the washers in a very diluted Simple Green solution and reassembled. The Penns still dont work as smoothly as I’d like them. The weight kinda holds there then all a sudden goes racing down! I guess Ill go shopping for some replacement washers at some point. Anyone know a good place to find parts? 4. Fished Sat am 6-1130. Started 120 well east of the traffic. Immed hooked up 65 rigger Dreamweaver workin yest see pic. Caught n fought fish out to 200 n back. Very streaky day. Last fish was out in 320 at 1115am. Spoons on riggers were best for me. Couple small fish early on divers but thats it. Down temp was 49 at 60 and 42 at 105 I think. 4/4 matures/teeners w 8-10 smaller n medium kings. Most action by 930am. No real pattern unf.
  5. Fished Oak Fri am. Very bumpy to start. Setup in 90 east of harbor. Popped 2 on riggers before lines out. 1 mature 1 griller. Trolled w waves west for 9 miles 90-150fow only popped 2 more/same 1 mature 13-14lbs 1 griller. Rigger 65 down spoons (Dreamweaver) Afternoon shift started off fast again nice mature 180fow east of harbor 65 DW spoon. Trolled out around to 365 and back. Random depths popped steelies n small kings same rigger 65 down (targeting 60-100 feet down). Strong N -> S surface current (no Fishhawk). 2 matures 13/14 lbs several immatures. 65 rigger took 90% fish. Trying it again today. Where’d all the big fish go? Noob signing off. 6. Fished Oak to the West same water we did well in the night before (165) but did not produce on Sat am. Couple teeners in the am on mag Dreamweaver spoon rigger/70 down. Ran back out in the pm. Made it out to 275 before a quick release on rigger then a freight train of a fish on #2 Dipsey 275 w 42 Stinger. Took 250’ feet in an instant-faster than my SG47LC could keep up and snapped the wire. Turned back on that spot and popped a couple teeners and couple shakers before hanging it up about 930/dark. PS Thought the fish gods were trying to tell me something about the size of the fish we broke off. We’ll never know. See attached. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Nice report and nice work Relaxer. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Any idea how heavy a weight a Penn 620 Fathomaster Manual Rigger w long boom can hold/run? Thinking bout getting some torpedoes from Harvey. Dunno if I need the 16lb or can run them? Or if 12lb is good enough for Ontario? Have the big round Cannons now. Man. 100 feet down off Oswego they were running 20 feet behind me on surface. Who knows how far down. Thx!
  9. hey, thanks a bunch for that Fishmaster 196, I'll give them a try! I've got a date with a king outta the Oak not this weekend but the weekend after (7/17-7/19)
  10. I thought I'd bring this topic/post back to life since there's so much good information here, and to post my own question about dialing in my Lowrance HDS Gen 2. So far I've been able to catch a few fish, but I haven't marked a lot of fish, or bait, for that matter. I honestly can't recall my Lowrance settings as I type this, but I can say that I have been able to mark my downrigger down to about 65 feet, but at 100 feet down I did not mark them, which makes sense based on that depth, cone angle, blow back (which was significant). Last trip out I felt it was dialed in a bit better, but if anyone had their general settings for a Lowrance HDS Gen 2 I'd appreciate it. I do have the 12'' long transducer, whichever one that is! This is first time I've had any of these fancy touch screen Lowrance units on this my new to me (used) boat.
  11. This may/may not be a silly question but: what type of knots are people tying to their swivels? I'm running Seaguar 25lb STS flouro leaders on my downriggers (behind bead chain), and same 25lb STS for my diver leaders. NOTE: I'm tying normal Palomar or Trilene type mono knots, but I picked up/read somewhere that flouro aint mono, and therefore, I shouldn't use regular old mono knots on fluoro? Might be splitting hairs here, because I've not had any break-offs, but I'd rather be good than lucky when it comes to the details. PS: anyone else using the Seaguar STS type fluoro leader material? Not sure I'm impressed. I'm finding tiny frays and nicks in 1/6 or 1/8 of my leaders after each trip. And I'm pretty careful on my small boat, keep things tidy, keep leaders carefully wrapped on pool noodles between trips, etc. Retying when nicks/frays are found before next trip. Just curious.
  12. Ive got a pair if 620 Penn Manual Downriggers. They’re not operating as smoothly as they were just a couple weeks ago. Think they may need a cleaning of the drag washers, but the q is: what type of lubricant goes on the inner gears that get exposed in the process? Anyone know if there’s a certain type or viscosity that I should use? Ie do/do not use Lucas Marine blue grease that I use on my trailer bearings? Reel grease? Thx!
  13. Nope. Don’t have any of those rigs yet. FF is on the list. I like to keep my tackle to a minimum since my boat is on the smaller side and, well, I’m kinda cheap.
  14. Day/night doubleheader for me and my wife who grew up in Oswego but never fished there! Her folks still live there so we dropped off the pup at the parents and dropped the Crestliner in at Wrights Landing about 530pm Weds evening July 1st. Motored out NW to about 150 feet. Confirmed the down temp break with a Fishhawk TD at 100 feet. Ran all spoons, 100 feet down over 170fow rigger NK28 Hot Frog took the first hit. Nice fish tail walked me to 400 feet out and came undone. Then landed a small Atlantic on a chartreuse cheater on same rod. Had another fish go on rigger 65 down over 180 that also came undone. Was plenty frustrated at that point with only about an hour left to fish. Finally had another NK28 Hot Frog hookup at 100 feet down and landed him at 16lbs. Hot Frog took one last hit at the end of night 65 feet down over 120 but never hooked up. Ended 1/3 on kings and 1/1 Atlantic. Thursday morning launched 545am at Wrights Landing again. Made our way further west this time with an easterly troll planned in 1 footers coming from the west. Setup at 150 feet and trolled out towards 180 feet from there. Confirmed 48.4F at 95 feet down and set a rigger there with Moonshine/glow combo/MUP rig and then ran the other rigger to 86 down w Carbon 14 orange ladderback. #2 Dipseys at 150/180. Washed the spoons for a while til 86 rigger hooked up over 170 and took the wife for a ride 450ft plus! 22 minutes later we put her first 20.5lb king in the net! Washed lures to the east side of Oswego for a while longer prior to pondering a trip back upwind which became 1-3’ footers so wasnt trollin upwind. Just about that time I’ve not had a dipsey bite yet but kept trying and ran a Moonshine Green Jeans back 220 on a 2 setting. Finally hooked up a nice fish for the wife again, and put a 17lber in the net. Doubled down on the 220 diver on the other side with a Moonshine Hulk and that put a 15lber in the net for me. At that point the cooler was full and we called it a morning just west of the Niagara Mohawk nuke plant. Set a course for the Oswego lighthouse. 6 miles and over 45 mins later in 2-4 foot head seas and we were back on dock at 11am. Man did she get sporty in a hurry! So much for the ‘light winds’ I’d been reading in the forecast all week. So. First trip outta Oswego for me and the wife. I’d say it was definitely quality over quantity for us - 4 kings for 67lbs - 17lb average in a few hours- I’ll take it! Special thanks to Nick Long for posting his great report outta Oswego last Saturday that inspired our trip to my wife’s hometown this week before hosting her family at Seneca Lake this weekend. Good luck if you go! PS fleas werent terrible but were present on the divers. We got away with running braid on our dispeys but only because I’ve not decided out what type of reels I want to get to run wire. Next time out I will be running wire for sure
  15. I was out there in Black N Tan Crestliner. First time launching Port of Rochester and fishing west twd Braddock Bay. Tough start but pulled a few fish to save it at the end. Went 2/2 kings w 2 teeners and 3/3 steel, one came as a king/steelie double to more or less end the day at 230pm. Kings came on Sea Sick Wobbler 150 back #2 on dipsey and 1 on a rigger 33 down, NBK I think. Steelie put on a good show waiting to net wife’s king! No real pattern or magic depth. Started 85 and made it as far as 300. Moved further west and setup at 180 for last couple hours and picked that fish right after setting up. That fish gave me some hope! Turned back on it n pulled a small steelie on the way back up current. Strong W to E current (no Fishhawk but guessin .3-.4) Then nothing til almost 2 hours later ready to pack it in and got that king/steelie double in about 112fow at 230pm. Got hot! The wind died, the flies showed up, then the fleas decided to show up pretty heavy too. Time for some wire. I dont know the landmarks but I have some numbers from where we caught fish. Pm if you want em. Good luck if you go. PS Thx to the members here that gave me advice on where to launch and a starting point!
  16. Folks: I'm new here but planning to head towards Braddock Point on Fri Jun 26 - launching from port of Rochester/Genessee River (first time for me fishing this area). I'm a walleye guy from Erie but learning the ropes on the Finger Lakes and know just enough to be dangerous on Ontario. Happy to work together with anyone, just holler: 2one6-3three8-3four59 / Mark
  17. Looks like the wifey got me one already, so I'll pass. Good luck with the sale.
  18. Need a couple new diver rods to run wire this summer. Have experience using the 'whippy,' older, yellow Eagle Claw Starfire rods in 10' or 10'6" length, and thought they handled the wire bites well. BUT I'm reading the NEW Starfire rods have all plastic butts - instead of foam - that doesn't sound too good to my wet hands. I'm seeing the Okuma GLT rod series at the same price point. About $30-$35/ea at 10' or 10'6" length. Any constructive feedback on the above, or others rods I should consider, say under $50/ea? I'm an out of state/weekend warrior, fish a few weekends a year, take care of my stuff. These diver rods will be dedicated to running wire with twilli tips. Looking to purchase in next 7-10 days. Any good Father's Day deals out there? PS: May also pick up a pair of downrigger rods - I have a set of 'Cannon' brand downrigger rods now, got em from a buddy, they 'work,' but they struggle when trying to put some power on a bigger fish. Considering I dont think 'Cannon' makes rods anymore (maybe someone else made them for Cannon?) I was thinking about upgrading those rods, too.
  19. Rival? Squall? How are the drags? I'm thinking outside the Okuma, Daiwa, Shimano box for a pair for reels to put on diver rods and run wire divers this summer. Don't see much here on Penn reels. Who is running them? Likes, dislikes? I once fished with the older lever drag models on downrigger rods, that feature is available on their upper model called Fathom, line. Rival is the 'econo' ($80) reel, Squall is about $120. As a weekend warrior, these reels might see a couple dozen trips per season. However, if I load them up with wire, they better work well when I hook up with the 'big' one!
  20. Good reminder to always wear eye protection when netting fish. Last week my wife and I both had a spoon zoom by our heads when a fish came unbuttoned close to the boat. Glad it was an ear and not an eye. A treble makes for an interesting ear piercing.
  21. Yep, ramps in nice shape couple weeks ago. Fishing was on fire then, not so sure bout now, though.
  22. Reel Doc: is this the summer pattern/program I can expect to use going forward? Id much prefer to fish deeper w riggers n divers than get caught in the shallows like I did once yesterday when a fellow troller decided to give me the ol’ shoreline squeeze. Luckily didnt lose any tackle. Appreciate it.
  23. I’ll get the party started. I wish! Jigged a good bit to start this am, south of Dean’s Cove. Marked tons of bait and super marks in 30-35fow but no takers on the jig. Dropped the hardware and ran a south troll inside 36-43fow pulled 2 chubby lakers 1 on a 20 jet and 1 on Dipsey bout 30feet down, no real program/pattern except boy girl spoon/silver back continues to catch fish on my boat. Pulled 2 more lakers on boy girl dipsey again but now 150 feet back in 70-80fow? No real pattern. Hope to see some good reports from Cayuga this weekend. Good luck Social Fishtancing!
  24. Anyone got any stray single trackmount rod holders laying around you nonlonger need or use? Perhaps there’s an odd one that’s been hiding in the garage? Or an uneven number? I can use 1-3 holders to balance out what I already have. I’m on west side Seneca Lake. Thx!
