  6. For those that can’t make the meeting- any questions you want us to ask?
  7. Haha guessing he doesn’t want to attend an alewife meeting as part of his party? We’re going to make some video summaries to share for folks that can’t attend. I’ll start compiling questions from this thread and will share the responses post-meeting.
  8. 9. It’s water chestnut, which is an invasive species here in NY. You can report it to your local invasive species management office, here: https://fingerlakesinvasives.org/staff/. They might be able to assist with removal.
  10. In case anyone is still worried about the original issue, the USGS baitfish crew is still very much on the chopping block. A judge temporarily blocked mass firings, but the area that our folks work in, “Ecosystems”, is slated to be wiped out. If you were hoping to get complete results from the alewife survey this year, you might want to prepare yourself for a disappointment. https://www.govexec.com/workforce/2025/05/thousands-layoffs-hit-interior-national-parks-imminently/405145/?oref=govexec_news_alert_nl&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=GovExec+Alert%3A+May+7%2C+2025&utm_term=newsletter_ge_alert&fbclid=IwY2xjawKI-OlleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHl2dpF14pDG14lT6AE83kCPi4PpGHgOngSFp64SeUGkQfQQcDsrfuFw4CxIN_aem_smH8DNtuL4-WRd2HFsdcTA https://www.npr.org/2025/05/09/nx-s1-5393777/trump-rifs-court-mass-layoff-doge
  11. Please also remember, when it comes to our USGS folks working on Lake Ontario, they are the reason we have a lake wide alewife survey that now includes Canada. They do 1/3 of the actual sampling, but lead the age interpretations, data analysis, and report writing. They (Brian) read every post here, answer your questions when other offices won’t, and have strived to push the science forward every day. Losing the equipment, expertise, and people of USGS will be an absolute tragedy.
  12. Scientists in agreement is a good thing. Are you referring to the fact 15 scientists collaborated on writing the recently published paper? That’s what makes the Great Lakes amazing; we have people and agencies working together across the basin, pooling data and resources to accomplish things that would be impossible for a single person or office to achieve alone.
  13. Are you a charter fishing captain working in New York's Great Lakes or tributaries? Join New York Sea Grant (NYSG) and partners in Oswego, NY on March 30, 2024, from 9am-3pm at the Lake Ontario Conference Event and Conference Center (26 E 1st St, Oswego, NY 13126) for a day of networking with fellow captains, & talks and discussions about Great Lakes charter fishing. Speakers will range from the US Coast Guard to fisheries scientists. FREE Food and refreshments will be provided throughout the day, including lunch. Please complete the registration form to reserve your spot (https://bit.ly/NYchartercaptainsconference), as space is limited.
