  1. The tale of two deer woods... A week ago or so I was posting about all kinds of bucks showing up on cam, bucks sparring, and every young buck in the woods was cruising and harassing everything he saw. Typical of late October.

Fast forward. Here we are November 7 and cameras are quiet. Does want nothing to do with being out in the open. The amount of blurry pics of does is astonishing. Every time I get a picture of a doe on a field edge, a buck is right there to chase her off. Its getting tense out there. We may be a week from peak rut but certainly there is some hot does out there and the act of repopulating the woods has begun. Its about that time to see some mid day giants.

  2. This is too good not to share....

    This is Hunting.

It will break your heart and you will go days without getting so much as a shot at an animal.

    You will miss your shot.

You will see garbage in the bush, and have to pick it up.

You will wound something one day, and it will make you cry.

It will teach you life lessons.

You will learn that one more minute can make all the difference.

You will learn that life doesn't care...the weather warms up anyways, the wind changes direction, and all you can do is work with it.

You will learn patience and determination.

    It will inspire you.

You will see a mother and her baby, and your heart will swell.

You will be humbled by that doe blowing at you, less than 10 yards away.

You will see the beauty of dawn.

You will learn the feeling of being prey.

You will see things so beautiful, others seem dull in comparison.

You will speak to another species.

    This is hunting.

    It will make you vulnerable.

You might cry over the animals you shoot.

You might make mistakes and fret over the what ifs.

You will face your own worst enemy in the bush: yourself.

You will have to walk through the dark, basically blind deaf and dumb.

You will learn the bittersweet feeling of letting an animal live, or choosing to kill one.

You will learn the important balance of life and death.

    You will become ..... you.

You will learn passion, grit, strength, emotion, Independence, determination, empathy, silence and peace.

It is where you will learn your most valuable lessons.

It is where you will make your best memories.

It is where you will cry, laugh, and love.

It is where you learn to be still and be quiet.

It is what you will devote your life to, and never regret it.

This is what we call Hunting.

  3. Well yesterday morning I had some incredible buck movement. It started about 430 and went until about 900. Its a guess but 12-15 different bucks including 2 matures.

Today... crickets. Overall some decent movement overnight but no sign of the buck movement like 24 hours ago. Curious to see what early morning brings.

8 different bucks on camera since 430 am this morning (630 now). 1 mature, 2 2.5 year olds, and a pile of first racks. Weather conditions look great this am! Good luck out there.

    update... Its 730 now

12 different bucks on camera since 430 am this morning (730 now). 2 mature, 3 2.5 year olds, and a pile of first racks. Does have been almost nonexistent on camera. Im guessing 50% on food and 50% deep in hiding

  5. Halloween am

    SW wind 5-10 mph

    Cloudy skies

Well the kid got it done this morning and punched his buck tag. Long story short. My kid has been back in the game this year and seems to have the itch to be in the deer woods again. Last week he punched a doe tag and just a few days ago he passed a small buck. We have been talking back and forth where/when he should be hunting. With this cold front coming through I told him starting Tuesday (today) he needed to switch to and hunt the mornings. Afternoons are still ok but mornings are a priority. Yesterday he asked where he should be and I'm glad he listened.

He text me this morning and said "big buck" and then immediately followed up with a phone call from the tree stand.

He said he could hear a buck grunting but couldnt see it. He grabbed his grunt call and grunted back a few times. 20 minutes later this stud buck shows up 10 yards to his right. The buck was spooky and he thinks it spotted him in the tree. Rather then continuing to walk by him the deer turned 90 degrees and walked broadside in front of him. He was about 20-25 yards in the thick stuff on a good pace. My kid tried to stop him with a mouth grunt. Braappp. But the deer kept walking so my kid took a moving shot and shot under him. He said he was shaking when he took the shot and he was pissed that he missed. Luckily for him the buck didn't know what even occurred. He jumped about 10 feet and stopped. My kid quickly knocked an arrow, drew, and shot again. About 10 minutes went by and that's when he text me and then called. He had no idea where or even if he hit the deer. He quickly found his first arrow (lighted nock) but couldn't find his other arrow. I told him to back out quietly and call me. We decided without a lot of info to go off of that we would wait until noon and go back in. He shot at 9am so I figured 3 plus hours would be good.

We met at noon and walked back to the scene. We walked through the scenario. Shot windows, direction of travel, etc. We looked for about an hour without any blood and the arrow. We were now in grid search mode. My kid said the deer crossed the mowed trail but he never saw him in the woods after that. I thought that was strange. So I started to think the deer turned 90 degrees when he entered the other woods and went directly away from him and thats why he never saw him. We started grid searching in that direction and boom there he was. 60 yards from the tree stand laying in the thick stuff.

After a series of high fives and some quick pictures it was time for an autopsy. Single lung and center punch on the liver. Dead deer... Didn't go 60 yards! His best buck and hes happy as hell to do it with the bow!

    Proud Dad moment!!!
