  1. RMEF tried real hard to bring elk back about ten years ago.  Started a fenced program in two spots in the state.  Surprise Surprise DEC killed it off said NO.  (I guess they didn't throw trout unlimited money at them)  As far as wolves go it is a master plan to end Hunting and eventually firearm ownership by introducing wolves.  BIG NON STARTER WITH ME...  Wolves have killed more huntable elk populations out west then you can shake a stick at... Ask Idaho..

Yeah good point regarding flaring tempers, those letters can raise my bp sometimes too.

I haven’t paid too much attention recently to the DCL (deep chlorophyll layer) but have to assume it’s still like u say, an important zone of productivity.  As nutrients and subsequently algae continues to decline there is less biomass at every trophic level especially fish and the predator-prey interactions intensify . You might like this paper

takehome, as I saw it was, that based on diatom record, LO is more or less back to a pelagic algal community that mimics pre-European colonization .

VP- I hoped  I could coax an idea or 2 out of you. The length of summer idea makes total sense. while the lake is definitely getting warmer, the time period of stratification is also a lot more variable/longer, we wrote  a paper hypothesizing that phenomenon would also help lamprey in Superior (or any Lake) get bigger.over time. .

Goby are fascinating, your term prolific might even be an understatement. I agree Corms, YP. SMBs and others fish focus on them…but wouldn’t  that keep their densities low and work against overpopulation effects? Lord knows those fish eating feathered “beauties” don’t seem to be any less abundant these days. The upwelling is an idea we tossed around as well and makes sense, bunch of Goby forced into high density deep zones in late winter/spring, stress them out cause they ate all the mussels in the sizes they can crush, then temp changes push them over some tipping point. Speaking of Something Spectacular, One of the now retired scientists used to suggest crazy high sturgeon stocking to control Goby…I increasingly think that idea has legs, hell maybe we can someday even open a fishery for them! My sturgeon studying colleagues might faint if they read this but I lik restoration cause we can, fish for and eat those species again.

Merry Christmas to you, the family and everyone. I might be taking you up on that offer if we don’t get some snow and cold weather. Managing one’s property with lots of late season food seems like a dumb idea when it’s this warm.

Any chance your still working on the impact of the CISCO/Whitefish reintroduction and its impact on the food pyramid for recovering Alewife's population?  I still believe the reintroduction of the species has had a negative impact on alewife production and survivability.

  3. The word "Sustainable" means cash grab... trust me when I tell you this.  I work for a company who is very much capitalizing on this non sense... I hate to even say this but I agree with Rolmops our future is Micro Nuclear Fusion.  They also have a big push to end the rural way of life.. they want us living in suburbia where they have more control.

  4. My wife connected on one of our shooters during her Rut cation on Nov 5.  Shot him at 18 yards with her Vertical bow.  He started visiting one of our kill plots to tend a scrape.  After 2 days he daylighted a visit in the am (Thank you Tactacam Cell Cam for the info) and she slipped in there in the afternoon.  She saw him that afternoon but couldn't get a shot.  Next day she sat the kill plot all day, he didn't show up but he was on an every other day pattern to this scrape.  On the third day she sat the plot, she put an arrow thru him at 10am as he came in to check the scrape.  He went a 120  yards and tipped over.  I couldnt be more proud of her.  She puts a ton of time in.

  5. As a trade off for the extra 30 minutes on each end of the day this is a no brainer.  Hunting for mature animals this 30 minutes is critical.  Orange is no biggie anyway I always wore it when walking during a gun season.

Currently, the East end rivers and streams are loaded, so we can't use the stocking cuts as an excuse either. I'm at a loss for why it was tougher for some areas of the lake.

I have not talked to one 15 to 20 yr experienced guide who has said the rivers were loaded.  Pretty good Coho run but certainly not Kings.  There are a few internet hero fish cutters over stating there business but I think that is where it ends....  Oswego never got a run.

I’ve been in Fair Haven my whole life at Shady Shores Campground started going with my grandparents and it’s where I learned to fish.  As I got older I got my own camp.  This year the owner sold the campground to a corporation and they doubled the cost and basically gave a months notice to decide.  They also changed rules and such.  So I took that as a sign to move on and found a new campground near the oak.

A Coworker of mine bought a camper in there a year ago... Terrible what they did to all of you.  I dont see the market they expect... And the marina cost for a slip now... GOOD FREAKING LUCK!!! Outrageous.

the green dot flasher and hammer fly combo is working again?  That old go-to has been gathering cobwebs. Glad it’s back!  The black edge/glow slick SD with an A-Tom-mik hypnotist combo has been working as has meat rigs fished off smaller 8” protrolls.

Again??  It does not stop.  KISS... Also I am trying to help him with east end combos.  Stop throwing your Niagara water color combos in this conversation... Yes it is different!! :)
